Surf Lakes Take 2!
Surf Lakes clearly aren't believers in the old adage that you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. After last year's inglorious curtain drop, which included faulty equipment, brittle concrete, and questionable wave quality, the crew have regathered, rebuilt, and rereleased the hounds.
The first sniff was two photos of thee times lid World Champ Ben Player at the wave called 'The Island'.
Player said the wave was as heavy as anything he's ridden in the ocean the same size.
Then, Surf Lakes dropped footage from the next peak over, 'Occy's Peak', which showed a quick drop to barrel to cutty section. The footage has multiple replays of the same wave, which may have some people asking questions, but the quality on that wave is hard to fault.

Benny's waves got me real excited, until it clicked that the instagram post I was looking at was from Surf Lakes in Yepoon and not UrbnSurf in Melbourne!

Occy's wave a bit less so. Fairly small and short. Not something i'd pay the reported $5 per wave for.

I've seen in the last 24hrs the claim of 8' being quoted, I can't say that I believe that is what we just saw.
8' face claimed in Benny's, so 4ft.. which looks about right for that slab, 3/4ft.
I'm wondering over two days why there were only two waves filmed??
I dare say there were many more and they are perhaps just drip feeding at the moment. Time will tell.

Correct me if I'm wrong by my understanding is that the Rocky/Yepoon pool is a test facility only and unlikely to be open to the public anytime soon. Surf Lakes will then licence out the whole concept (wave technology, wave park plans etc) to interested developers.
I was in Rockhampton and surrounds for work in March, kept an eye out but couldn't spot the facility. Is the exact location a secret?

With all the talk about man made reefs like the one at Palmy and whether it will be shaped well for surf, this is probably evidence that man knows how to shape a reef for good waves - if man wants to.
Not that easy. In the ocean waves come from various directions, with varying periods, which makes it harder to create a design that copes with all the variables. Then there's the matter of sand build up which is ever changing.

The wave definitely gets smaller over distance which you would expect because unlike ocean swell which is bein driven consistently this is a single plunge hence energy dissipates over distance just like a rock dropped in a pond so what may st art as a four foot wave will turn into a two foot wave over a short distance
I am still waiting to see the finances charge out rates per hour how many in the water on each wave what is the return on the investment
Wales uk 80 pounds for 50 minutes or about $140 Aussie who will pay that and how many waves per hour will one ride and who will manage the potential hassle especially ally if they are Gold Coast surfers where it's a dog fight every day
I like the idea and it's great that someone is having a solid go and I would support anybody who has a go but typically there are plenty of knockers whose contribution is generally zero
