When did we start calling "Swell events"

Hako o hakonde ni-biki no inu's picture

Every swell that comes along that lasts more than a day and is over 4ft is now a "Swell event", how did this happen?

Sort of agree with this .... online froth-o-meters everywhere ........ but original thought can always be rewarding.

I am surprised to see the extent to which Swellnet is hyping this "event".

Why? I can assure you there'll be plenty of great waves from about Newy south to the border. Should last a few days too.

yes, thats my point. It's obviously a swell that greatly favours southern NSW....it's probably going to be a hoax/fizzle/bank buster for most of the rest of the east coast; yet your article implies the whole East coast is in a state of great anticipation for this swell.

for a hell of a lot of surfers this is a worst case scenario at the start of winter, not something to celebrate.

don't like home truths? I'm pretty sure Hako's point is that the surf media, mainstream media (in this case) tend to highlight and broadcast any and every swell that looks half decent these days. Its a fact and I agree him, it is a fair question.

Steve, this may amaze you but there are surfers on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast greatly looking forward to this swell. Spoke to a few this morning that keen to hunt down rare nooks in the coast. A few more are posting elsewhere on this site. And still others are marvelling at the unique setup.

Meanwhile, Australia's largest surfing population, Sydney, is staring at a great swell 'event' that begins with a rapid jump from the north and tails off with four days of offshores. Same goes for every surf town from Coffs to Eden

The world is bigger than Lennox Head.

Ahh, it's great to get the hype - love it. Get your sticks ready but let's be real, these are very difficult to predict. Not often you get a whole coastline affected over a number of days. And with off shores !!

What staitey said gotta keep up with the times. Other site been putting out "east coast swell alert" with maps showing big red blobs of heaving 4 ft swells.

Is it going to be that big by Sunday arvo that you think it's going to wipe out Sydney?

Thanks Stu, and we'll see how it pans out for Sunny Coast and Gold Coast surfers , as well as the North Coast, which is a helluva big slice of the east coast surfing population.

But in all honesty and considering we had day after day of excellent to awesome E'ly groundswell over Summer with good winds and perfect sand I don;t think this upcoming event justifies the hype. To me, a black nor-easter is not an occassion to celebrate, it normally means flood rains and storm surf along with coastal erosion. And a long barren period afterwards.
Happy to be proven wrong.

Consistent 4 to 6ft swell with light NW winds next 4 days, "swell event" posted, change of priorities, head off surfing. Yep works for me.

I reckon for those in Tas this is definitely going to be an event. Especially if the predicted NE size on Monday comes to fruition. That stuff will be pretty much unrideable, but its all those nooks and crannies the swell filters into, the extra size and power enabling stuff that never breaks, to break.

But yeah, a swell gets called around this way, it becomes an 'event', there are 30,000 instagrams of the synoptic, 500 to 1000 crew descend, and it's 4-6ft...

I've got a blue fiberglass tinnie that I got at an AFP auction .

Sealers cove wont be much good as it does not handle any sort of swell, just turns into a washing machine as there is nowhere for the water to escape, jump on board with us mate, only $150. Keep in mind lostdoggys aren't allowed in national parks.

LD . Regardless of this event . That is a low blow my friend . Low blow . You'll need a kayak on that peninsula , should see in excess of 150mm in the next 12-24 hrs .
Shaun . I'll be the one with a desperate look in my eye at the boat ramp !
But to be clear , we are talking about the casino wreck yeah !?!

You'd mean Crown casino, I can't see it getting into the docklands , but maybe if that idea of having a wavegarden in the yarra(remember that one) got off the ground it will be waves of the same quality.

Yeah I didn't say the Wreak of Casino . But if we are going to go there , can we dance the Maranga before we have a flutter . I'll warn you though if I have a go , get on a roll and break, isle seal the deal . A lot of Sharks tend to hang out the front though , and it's got worse over the last few years , it's like they are breeding or something .

Yeah thanks , but probably too late for that " setup " , horse is packed . Was toying with changing my name to John - Southey , but with a surprising period for that direction . I'm torn between my French heritage and a young English vic era boy . Either way calories are going to be burned . Currently " loading " and upping my squat reps in prep . And if I do see you can you make sure you anchor your boat a LONG way away . You know the Sharks in the area follow boats hoping for by catch . Don't become by catch . If I don't post by Tues morning can some tell my missus I'm gone . Cheers

Not just there, all over the coast. I've seen shots from Angas, a certain big bar on the Mid North Coast, Cenny Coast, Queensy Bommie, Bower, about 50 breaks on the Coal Coast, all of them pumping off their respective heads, not to mention two sessions at my local point, the last of which goes into hall of fame considerations. And though the size will taper, we've got another 48 hours of primo conditions to come.

Gonna be some great memores from this swell.

Hype...? I reckon we told it exactly as it is.
