Whats the story with no spectators?

How hard do you think they will be policing it?

Some of the guys they interviewed looked like they had just rolled in off the streets at Surry Hills from 20 years ago, either that or they forgot to go the primary school and are actually full retard to the point where they can't even hold together a simple conversation.
They are on live TV - "can I start that again......?"
Would pay money to watch a full edit of every dumb thing that was said during the event, actually I don't think I have the 3hrs to spare
Should have been a couple of drug sniffer dogs there I reckon.

The difference between what surfers saw on the live webcast and what the media are reporting is huge. Coastal Watch, Red BUll, and Stab all had people go ballistic on their Facebook pages about the comp - the overhype, the lack of waves etc . Even Hippo said this was as small as Cape Fear breaks. Today Coastal Watch and Stab are running stories saying the contest scored.

Will review and add an opinion on the area, I didn't know (nor expect) an input on mental health. Can someone link me? @Stu @brutus

Not being an Aussie I don't really fall into the tall poppy bracket but then I'm sure niether do most Aussies who watched the event. It was a total shambles. No idea who half of the surfers were but it's pretty clear Matthews basically got his mates involved, it might appeal if you are also in that crew or mates with them but to the rest of the world it's like going to any gnarly break and watching the locals on an average day.
Compare it to other red bull events, the mountain bikes down hill and freestyle, snowboarding, sailing etc all slick events with competitors who are at the top of their sport. Then you've got cape fear, competitors who don't even seem like they are that bothered about being there saying in interview how nice it is to surf with thier mates even though it's a poor day. And that kobi guy, if you are going to mark yourself out as an ambassador for suicide prevention at least be able to string a sentence together. With that half arsed effort and his disinterested interview he just came across as a bit of a fuck wit in my opinion which does nothing for what is an important cause.
Seemed like this was an extension of Matthews role in the crew series, he's clearly milking it for all it's worth but id be surprised if red bull pay for another jolly next year.

the-spleen Monday, 1 Sep 2014 at 1:40pm

^^^Exactly. There wasn't any tall poppy syndrome from me, I tuned in wanting to watch a good contest and all it delivered was surf smaller and more inconsistent than my local (which I missed out on in favour of watching Cape Fear - bad move). The waves were underwhelming and the commentary atrocious, it felt like cameras had been trained on a local boardriders club with all the references to "the boys". As a viewer I was made to feel like an outsider. Koby Abberton's barely lucid interviews are best forgotten - noble cause, shameful delivery ("It's called fuck the world" & "Call your mate up, but not to take drugs with him," on live television? The mind boggles).

Overall I'd be very surprised if Red Bull bothered with it again. Last year they broadcast a BASE jump from the edge of space, this year a freefall into the gutter.

1 comment tangent here so please excuse....

Lifty: funnily enough the benefit of the rowing machine so far has been it was easier to deal with humping a hiking backpack! Putting a bit more angle through the turns on the streets on a mate's skatey too. Not sure when I'll get a proper chance to see if I can hold more rail trim in the water but cheers anyway...

Yep, the education, morality and mentality of one individual was clear enough not only in the interview but in the "movie" made a while back.

Crap on about respect all through the movie and then at the end, laughing their heads off whilst ramming through some farmers gate at 100 mile an hour.....

They're a smart crew that lot..........oh but hang on, they surf..............

In my opinion shipsterns is a far better location for a BIG WAVE event - because it actually gets BIG WAVES. Anything that makes even a remote reference to big wave riding needs to be at least a 20 foot face or it starts to look like a joke.

Maurice you're missing the point big time if you think this is a case of tall poppy syndrome....

More like a few people with brain cells feeling ripped off when the reality was so far below the hype ...

Aussies used to be able to call a spade a spade....now it seems more and more like we are descending into American style hype, backslapping and pocket pissing.

As well, maybe in this modern age, the concept of a bunch of pros acting in the interests of promoting a multi-national drink company and commandeering public space that belongs to all just doesn't fly too well.

If you put your hand up for an event that will be broadcast around the world and think you might like to promote a charity you give that charity the respect it deserves. That isn't education it's giving a fuck. Unless of course it's an afterthought and you really just wanna surf with ya mates for ten grand.

Like I said compare to any other red bull event, they specialise in raw packaged for TV, this didn't even come close. But why would it? Matthews sold red bull the idea but he isn't an event organiser, no amount of high fiving from his mates was going to give him the knowledge he needed or the waves he needed to pull it off. I'm sure that'll be obvious to the money men now.

Interesting that Matthews blames the forecast being off by a couple of feet on his Instagram feed this morning

http://instagram.com/p/sYDtg6EsUn/?modal=true

I have recorded Fuel and will watch it late with the fast forward on. By the sounds of things Red Bull got what they needed some content and it ran on the main news network and page 3 of the papers. I do agree with Brutus though, next years comp will be all the better for running it yesterday. Getting sole use of National park is next level though and freeride is bang on the money...maybe the national parks will let Wellymon and I fly the red bull heli into Mt Kosciuszko for some backcountry lines.

BTW hind forecasting....heres the forecast Friday. SN nailed the forecasts across the board especially the direction changes in swell. The attitude should be similar to the calling the Eddie on. Unless its 10 foot, its not on.

I had to laugh in the staged interview / promotion at the start of the event which mind you cut into probably the biggest and best wave ridden for the day. Regardless if you dislike boogers or not, the mentally handicapped Kobi stated that anyone is welcome bar the boogers because it is too dangerous with them out there.

Was it too dangerous when they kept it under wraps with minimal people out there
or is it too dangerous when they are paddling in while the compton wanna be boys tow in on 8fters
or is too dangerous when the compton boys have an event with at least 20-30 people working on it for live tv.

Give me a break

Let's please not turn this into a competition of who has the hardest upbringing and how it is linked to suicide and mental health. It may interest you that countries like Oman, Azerbijan and Kuwait have some of the lowest suicide rates in the world yet are in war torn Middle East, a place I can image to be far worse the “Fairfield” at least you went to school.

Suicide does not discriminate. Surfer or not, Western Suburbs or not, Abberton or not, Bra boy or not and Australian or not, it will in one way or another effect you somehow in your life, unfortunately.

Koby has done his very best (I hope) to spread the message of suicide prevention and mental health, in this case a charity called FTW (Fuck the world). Irrespective of his mental capacity and PR abilities this is a huge tick in my mind and hopefully a positive step in the restoration of his otherwise pretty poor public image. The fact that we’re talking about it now means it’s job has been done.

@Brutus you’re right in saying we are all such a negative bunch and we should look for positives, but it probably has to do with following in the wake of Chopes and how bullshit incredible that comp really was and that this was so overly commercialised and exclusive.

Darryl Menzies's picture

I have to admit that crowds at the event would have been horrific. But they are at most comps., so why exclude the public? It's a National Park for God's sake. It's like closing Bell's beach to the public during the Rip Curl Pro. or Quicksilver at Snapper. Who would stand for that? There are other ways of transporting people to the event site without causing traffic jams within the Park. Putting a fence around surfing events goes against all the principles of the surfing fraternity from as far back as I care tor remember. It seems that Red Bull can only see Dollar signs over their pathetic excuse of protecting the environment. Hundreds of thousands visit this National park each year. A few thousand on one day properly supervised would not cause the enviroment any undue damage and any clean up should be at Red Bull's expence. This exclusion has changed how I and a lot of older surfers in the Cronulla area view Red Bull's plan toward surfing and it's future.
