For when one interesting things thread isn't enough.
Facto....the only role in Godfather you couldve played was as the back end of the horse.
Godfather Part II, Fredo. No horse.
Wrong again, you ignoramus.
Great film though. One of the best.
Lee Strasberg! What a guru.
My all time fave movie(s).
You've given me something to do- i'm gonna watch the godfather trilogy.
I'll leave the gun but bring the cannoli.
Three's on SBS Movies tonight. Might give it another go.
"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"
Meh, in comparison with the first two.
Kinda like Mad Max 3.
Allied to the 2GB thread?
Interesting that Eco's points 2,4,5,6,7 and 10 could easily be applied to regressive left Byron-style ideology.
Probably no. 12 as well but I think that's pretty universal.
So it's ship ahoy and full steam ahead with the "regressive left Byron-style ideology" (seriously, whatever the fuck that is?! Must be an East coast thing, and mythical at that) then?
That's where we're headed??
I didn't think the back end of the horse played any role in the godfather anyway...was cut!
Oh dear...these days spent home alone are going to test all of us
Some Ernst & Young dweeb mentioned this on The Drum tonight.
We had it posted on here Monday.
Again, I think our government is looking into this.
As corporate socialism ramps up.
Freeride76 I been getting pretty angry about govt bailouts...virgin and Qantas most notable
What are the options though...what are the consequences of not bailing them out...what does a big corp do if they don't get assistance?
And I guess I ought disclose...in the midst of my anger...I bought a shitload of Qantas shares at $2.10
If figure if I am going to be angry about it...I may as well be happy as well...it's a bit like betting on Medina to win a heat
"What are the options though...what are the consequences of not bailing them out...what does a big corp do if they don't get assistance?"
Go broke, shut down or get bought up by other airlines.
The result being lack of competition and then we all suffer, remember how expensive airline travel use to be before budget airlines got involved?
Check out the list of Aussie airlines no longer around (I counted 54) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Defunct_airlines_of_Australia
The Indo list just as long will bring back a few memories for some too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_Indonesia
Pup, it was a quick think about tribalism.
Fascism is closely linked to tribalism and it's interesting to see the same thought processes play out with some of the "progressive" parts of society i.e. the post-truth crew in Byron and around the world.
Specifically, they're happy to throw out the baby (science and critical thinking) with the bathwater (the excesses of modern life), Eco's point 2.
From this point, disagreement is treason, point 4, and there is a fear of difference, point 5.
Naturally there are appeals to social frustrations, point 6.
Of course no one loves a plot like the tin-foil hat regressive left (point 7), and no one does elitism quite like them either (point 10).
Finally, there's definitely an impoverished vocabulary which (limit[s] the instruments for complex and critical reasoning”, (point 14) but I think this is unintentional and in any case, pretty much universal these days.
So are we headed in this general direction?
Hard to say but I think there's definitely a post-truth movement happening and the affects on rational discourse are pretty obvious, and hence why this is the "regressive left".
Absolutely not, or maybe only to those very much in their own little bubble.
It's clear that basic human reactions like tribalism can take us in interesting directions, some desirable and some not.
How about loans Indo...was that 715 mill package a gift or a loan?
Any corporate bailout by tax payers should mean national ownership of a portion by the government. A nationalised asset.
I don’t understand how large corporations get bailouts when all investments are regarded as speculative.
"Any corporate bailout by tax payers should mean national ownership of a portion by the government. A nationalised asset."
I concur soggy. Spot on.
I can hear the howls of "Communist!" from the Sky camp as I type.
Makes sense to me though.
Up, Up and away with TAA....
Andy, Eco's list, his entire oeuvre is deeply human. He is describing human traits. Humanity ripe for manipulation and exploitation. And seen as such.
And who is holding the actual levers of power again?
(Let's not even consider our biggest foreign investor, foreign landowner, military and economic and cultural partner and touchstone*)
That is the point. The political point. The existential point. Right here, right now.
Eco actually lived through Mussolini. His early politics should have been more properly called Corporatism, since it was the unabashed merger of state and corporate power. And we all saw where that mutated and went back then.
Who's up for some hyper neo-feudalism with a Strong Leader™ ? Just don't mention the F word.
Unless you envisage the Stalinist anti-vaxxer soccer mums of Byron uniting and taking over, Andy??
*The nickname Cheeto Mussolini was prescient?!
"Unless you envisage the Stalinist anti-vaxxer soccer mums of Byron uniting and taking over, Andy??"
Not to be misunderestimated.
Corbyn went to the UK election with renationalisation of the railways as part of his platform.
BoJo wants to sell the NHS. To Trump.
And the ALP wants China to have Australia.
( This article was written whilst CCP sleeper cells were looting Australia’s medical supplies which will now cost Australian lives. During this time the Chinese government was also threatening Australia with consequences if we didn’t allow Chinese into the country. The CCP said that closing borders was an extreme overreaction and racist.
China has now shut its borders to foreigners.
"The lack of radical action to prevent those obscene lines outside Centrelink bodes ill for the immediate battle and, therefore, the course of the war.
Serious government subsidies for retaining workers – as some countries are doing – was dismissed by the Prime Minister as being “dangerous”.
He did not explain what he thought was dangerous about it."
Dan Andrews ....ALP premier of Victoria , is a signatory to the CCP’s Belt and Road empire building project despite an explicit Federal rejection of the proposal as it is very obviously not in Australia’s best interests.
ALP is beholden to China and have no problem becoming our Vichy rulers under CCP dictate. They prove it with their actions anywhere they have power and prove it wth their words in every other instance.
You, me and Eco all understand that "humanity is ripe for manipulation and exploitation", I'm just pointing out that so-called fascist tendencies can apply across the political spectrum simply because they are basic human reactions.
I'm also saying don't underestimate the extent to which these reactions are already negatively affecting public discourse, even from the apparently righteous left.
And yes, these people have significant economic and social power - some would say they've already taken over Byron ;)
"And who is holding the actual levers of power again?"
This is a (often misguided) reaction to those who are holding the levers of power, hence throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Privatise profits nationalise debt to the punters, haven't we seen this movie before?
I Focus, this is the biggest blockbuster in the franchise yet. Box office through the roof.
BTW Godfather III was still meh.
So Jello was on the ball again?! Or was that Malcolm Roberts?
The 'Zen Fascist' doctor's housewives of Byron are going to overthrow the Morrison or Dutton or Wilson federal government (bullets and/or ballot box?) and usher in what? a Green Stalinist new world order that will holistically win hearts and minds, whilst brooking no dissent, shut down or buy out the Murdoch & Nine media outlets, vilify the 'white flight' 'blow ins', and further corporatise our peasant lives, and all with Chinese backing of course??
Forget shock doctrine, it'll be Birkenstock* doctrine.
Been getting plenty of rain over there? Mushies still about?
*Made in China.
Facto....your history of accusing others of racism as they pointed out the China threat are on record. You’re a CCP stooge and you’re not even sure how you got in that position.
One day you’ll wake up and realise that China hid and enabled the virus , did their utmost to export it to Australia ( Direct diplomatic appeals backed by threats ) whilst looting our medical PPE .
And you’ll look at yourself in the mirror and think “ Was i really appeasing and apologising for an evil empire ? “
The answer is ....yes you were and yes you are.
Why not go take that look in the mirror now ? Cause every time you try to silence discussion on China with ridiculous cries of racism , or outlandish cultural relativism or any of your usual tactics , you are doing a great disservice to your fellow Australians.
It’s a CCP propaganda and disinformation campaign and you’re spreading it with glee .
"...your history of accusing others of racism as they pointed out the China threat are on record."
Only you, Gloria.
And not only regarding China, me old China.
Your othering 'vibrant' shtuff gets a slap too.
You're a bigot, mate. Like the ridiculous charade that Alan Jones isn't gay, your bigotry is as transparent as one of his blouses.
And has been for years. Muslims, Indians, Chinese, all ethnicities or "fucking vibrant scum" as you so poetically put it lately.
Get your hand off it. Or get some fucking perspective, ya goose.
Get some perspective ?
As I said ....you’re like an Englishman siding with Germany in 1938.
Stifling the efforts to have an honest discussion at every opportunity. And for what ? If you were half smart you’d be aware of what’s unfolding, but you’re just another clown who’ll be stuttering in surprise when the shit is in the open. And right up until that point you’ll be writing your self satisfied bullshit over the internet and muddying the waters just when people need to be seeing clearly.
Does anyone not remember the fact that the Chinese speaking megalomaniac grub, Keven '07, declared to China with open arms that Australia was open for (their) business (read takeover). And we now wonder why we are in the position we are in.
But, of course, according to Facto, this would be racist, bigot talk............the blind leading the blind.............
listened to a podcast episode earlier this year about how often people confuse authoritarianism with fascism. Basically the latter is only a thing of "the right", but it contains key authoritarian traits. The left equivalent is extreme socialism. Also, exhibits key authoritarian traits.

Agreed. I've been harping on for years that everyone is misunderstanding China's intentions. Any attempt to have an adult discussion about it gets howled down with calls of "racist!".
To wit...the Chinese use this tactic more than any other. They know it's something we're all so scared of being called. Though more recently it seems to have worked less effectively. Disagree with the most COALition's key policies, but 100% behind what Mr Hastie is doing.
Here’s the thing with Kevin 07......
Self described Sinophile his whole life. Speaks the language fluently. Right up until he became PM when there was still a hint of public suspicion with regards to whether China would open itself to political reform as well as global trade.
Suddenly.....Kevin is the loudest voice in the room against China !
Kevin officially becomes persona non grata in Beijing.
Yet he still functioned as perhaps the purest conduit for Chinese interests in Australia.
Now he has left office he is once again an unapologetic cheerleader for the disgraced CCP regime. $1.4 Million per year* to act as their official “ Voice of reason “ in Australia.
What just happened ? If I didn’t know better , I’d say that it was preconceived that a Kevin not appear TOO pro-China during his tenure as PM lest it startle the herd. What better way to obfuscate his true nature than a WWE / West Coast -East Coast rapper style theatrical conflict ?
The true Manchurian candidate ?
* $30,000 per week

they've all been in on it... both colours...
the question is, do they know it?
Looks like shit's finally coming out in the open.
Next step will be pressure from China both political as well as the tacit implications of the withdrawal of Chinese investments.
You're starting to seem on the outer Facto, any thoughts on the matter?
I mean, clear, unambiguous thoughts?
Hey Mowgli I liked your post...and am always open for adult conversations about things...but I don't see much of it. More yelling theories and presenting them as fact...and abusing anyone who disagrees...that's not an adult conversation
I think the CCP is likely evil, pretty much as evil as most other governments around the world...but when people specifically and constantly target them...and ignore the wrongs of others, I just find that unbalanced, and borders racism at times
Don't like being in a world where a beautiful Chinese friend of mine gets told to put on a mask in the shopping centre...whilst a guy in the line behind her whispers fuck off home, you did this
Not adults I wish to converse with
Lordy, now I'm a cross between Chamberlain and Lord Haw Haw?
And blow in, ultra Aussie, self proclaimed man of the people, is Winston Churchill.
Of course, China is Nazi Germany.
History by media and dodgy Ozmosis!
Winston of Gallipoli and the fall of Singapore fame?
Quite apt actually, blow in. Winston was a super bigot too. No wonder John Howard's got THAT middle name, hey?
Didn't really dig us colonials, but.
Look over there. It's the yellow peril! Invading from without and within. Again!
Reds under the beds! (Actually, reds making our beds is a more interesting convo. Come to think of it, mine is made in Vietnam! Aussie mattress though. Oi!).
Meanwhile, this country gets ransacked, Business as usual. By our old foreign mates!
Biggest foreign investors and foreign landowners for decades and decades and decades.
Business as usual.
History teaches nothing. Sheep, wheat, hole in the fucking ground produce.
Round and round and round we go.
Did someone say something about chewing gum and walking at the same time?
Look at those guys...but not those ones?
We'll see very, very soon.
As the Chinese saying/curse goes, "may you live in interesting times."
you are a fucking idiot
caught in a 1990s narrative
90s narrative, hey Sypkahn?
This should be good. Is your 'post modernism' involved?
Jeez , we didn’t have too wait long for “ ridiculous cries of racism , or outlandish cultural relativism or any of your usual tactics “.
no, but yours is...
so bubbled up you have no idea
or defiant to the bitter end, not sure which yet
But having said that...I am partial to the odd barny
This thread is all...
Thinking Hoppa out there in his element...had to handle two or three...but held his own
Pssst, Sypkahn, just quietly...you don't know what 'post modernism' is or means or anything do you?
the world's meltimg, and the guy who thinks he's the most astute political commentator on here wants to talk about bottlo's, the peril of the woolworths/coles duopoly, and american imperialism in oz
1990s mate, some of us never left...
Blow in, the man who pictures me as Neville Chamberlain, and as treasonous as Lord Haw Haw, China as Nazi Germany, and himself as the heroic Winston (and I say 'pictures' because it reads like he's got all that from the Gary Oldman flick!), and talks about ridiculousness and relativism!
Stop. You're killing us!
"The world's meltimg..." Sypkahn, and post modernism is so late 70s to late 80s. Maybe reached its apogee with Baudrillard and the Gulf War. You're a fan of Baudrillard, aren't ya? Don't be shy.
