Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 16th September)

Best Days: Saturday, Sunday around Perth, Tuesday

Recap

A slight lift in swell across all coasts yesterday, but locations that were clean were tiny. Margs was poor and onshore.

Today some stronger SW groundswell has started to fill in with sets building form 4-6ft this morning across the South West and 2ft waves to the north.

A further large jump is due through the day and the Cape Naturaliste buoy is picking this up nicely. Conditions are best in protected locations though.

This weekend (Sep 17 - 18)

This afternoon's building SW groundswell is due to peak overnight/early tomorrow morning and we should see large sets early across the South West, coming in at 8-10ft+ at magnets, easing steadily through the day and further into Sunday from the 6ft range.

Perth should see 2-3ft waves during the morning, fading further from 1-2ft Sunday.

Conditions will be clean tomorrow morning with a light E/NE breeze, tending variable into the afternoon, and similar conditions around Perth for Sunday. Margs unfortunately looks to see onshore winds developing from dawn, creating poor conditions.

Next week onwards (Sep 19 onwards)

Our large and powerful S/SW groundswell due for Monday has now been upgraded slightly. This is a result of the the piggy-backing front pushing up on the tail of an initial polar low that's develop to our south-west. A broad fetch of SW gales will be projected right up and into us, producing a large consistent S/SW groundswell.

This swell will build through Monday, reaching 10-12ft across the South West into the late afternoon, and 3ft in Perth along with strong but easing S/SW winds.

Tuesday will see the swell ease back from 8-10ft+ or so and 3ft respectively with lingering SW winds across the South West and a light morning offshore in Perth.

Wednesday looks to be smaller again with increasing NW winds, possibly variable early around Perth.

Later in the week another moderate to large sized SW groundswell is due across the state, produced by a more polar frontal system firing up through Sunday and early next week.

We're looking at surf in the 8ft range around Margs and 2-3ft in Perth later Thursday and Friday but winds are a little unsure. More on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
