Pawa Tube Fest - Day 1

Held at the heaving Mexican beachbreak of Pascuales, the Pawa Tube Fest is a self-explanatory contest. Run during the three best days of a month-long waiting period surfers accrue points in a one-of-a-kind contest format that prioritises the pit.

One On One

Sydney Eastern Suburbs photographer, Jordan Barta, has multiple hook ups with Scott Campbell while surfing a southern Sydney reefbreak. It was the first time Scott had surfed this particular wave but he lobbed into plenty of pits without the familiarity the wave usually demands.

Photographic Attache

Che Chorley went trawling last week. Trawling back through his hardrive and this is what he landed: a bagful of photographs, some old, some real old, with no common theme save they were all taken in South Australian waters. Those that caught his eye went into the attache and onto public viewing.

Lines

Lines.

Corduroy. Corrugrations. Oceanic undulations.

...and that's about all I can come up with on a dusty Monday morning. But I think the point's been made, at least if you've spent time on a swell-drenched Victorian coastline enjoying a vista of lines, corduroy, corrugations etc etc.

All photos by Steve Arklay (and no, the photos weren't taken this weekend).

Rock, scissors, reef

Jughead Allport: Surfer & photographer. Kerry Down: Surfer & photographer.

So who's to surf and who's to shoot? Rock beats scissors and Jughead scores a swim across the reef.

All in a week's work

Earlier this winter the East Coast enjoyed a week long run of swell that sparked up reefs from Eden to Byron. Mark Halliday made the most of the spell clocking up the highway miles and shooting more perfect waves in seven days than many would surf in a year. Starting in his Eastern Suburbs backyard (first photos), Mark shot an array of waves in Sydney and the NSW South Coast.

If you wanna ride shotgun next swell you can contact Mark here, and if he's not home just admire his many photos.

Thunder and calm in Fiji

Perennial traveller, Joel Coleman from Saltmotion Gallery, has just returned from his latest jaunt. This time it was a sailing boat trip around Fiji put together by The Perfect Wave. The boat, The Regina, is a classic skiff that ran on the trades between Fiji's most popular wave, Cloudbreak, and many of the lesser-known, hard-to-access waves.

US Open of Surfing: Day 1

The surf was great in the morning but terrible in the afternoon, but the afternoon was when Kelly Slater surfed so that was when the beach was most crowded. Most of these shots are from the morning save for the odd Slater shot, 'cos when it comes to the Great Bald One we're just as star struck as your regular autograph hunter.

Weekend Delivery

Victoria was again kind to the weekend warriors when, for the second time in three weeks, a lovely swell hit Saturday and pumped right through to Sunday afternoon. The working week is that much easier following two days of waves like these.

Lunch hour at Cronulla

If you're on the East Coast and near a south swell magnet today you might've seen some energy arise out of an otherwise listless sea. For two hours a long range south swell broke under W/NW winds with few takers. Down at Cronulla Matt Griggs was Johnny-on-the-spot (as always), and Grant Muir and Rojet blitzed their :PCC mini-Simmons while the swell lasted.

Sub-Antarctic Secret Spot!

Working at Swellnet can be bloody frustrating at times. Every day we get sent numerous photos of secret spots that can't be named, semi-secret spots that can't be named, and bog popular spots that also can't be named. We just wanna tell the world where the waves are but the code of protocol weighs heavily upon us.

But now, finally, we have photos of a pumping Raglan-like left and we can tell you exactly where it is, right down to its lat and long co-ordinates.

What Google Earth Doesn't See

When you rove Earth's coastline, as Google Earth allows and which many surfers are want to do, certain points and coastal kinks stand out as unmistakable locations for good surf. Think J'Bay, G'Land, Lennox, where it's clear swell will peel laterally as far as the coast will allow.

And then there's the less obvious stretches of coast which the Google satellite orbits without betraying the presence of a good wave. Straight beaches with underlying reef offshore, well-aligned rock platforms, or in this case, a small gap in a reef with a fortunate sprinkling of sand.
