Maldives June Swell Report

Five weeks is a long time in surfing, so writing a monthly summary is quite a challenge but it helps that I shoot photos every day, and that very little actually changed out here this month!

West Papua

When asked about the surf potential in the troubled region of West Papua photographer John S. Callahan had this to say, "Excellent. In the northeast monsoon season this area receives consistent swell and there are dozens of potential surfing locations." Facing into the Western Pacific West Papua receives swell from a different window, indeed from a whole different ocean, then the well-travelled southern coasts of Indonesia.

Stepping up and stepping out

Last week's E/NE swell on the East Coast was magically invigorating, and not just for surfers. Such was the swell's form and heft that OK reefbreaks became good, and good reefbreaks became great. All of them breaking under a cloudless blue sky. Invigorating, oh yeah...

Somewhere within city limits a good reefbreak punched above its weight for a few locals including the ever-charging grom, Sam Jones, Ben Penny, Brett the golfing guy and one or two other lucky punters.

Day Comes

Apologies in advance for the sickeningly upbeat tone of this gallery, when you're displaying sunrises on the Sunshine Coast it's hard to avoid a bright and cheery ambience.

But here they are, six reasons to tuck in early and set your alarm clock to rise with the roosters. Not to mention beat the ravenous crowds.

Mr Price Pro - Finals

Julian Wilson has been enjoying the six week break in the World Championship Tour schedule. During the downtime he took a quick jaunt to South Africa where he donned the coloured singlet and won the Mr Price Pro at Ballito on the weekend. Wilson beat fellow 'CT surfer Jordy Wilson, who was also relaxing and taking it easy between top tier contests.

Payback on the Surf Coast

The recent swell on the Surf Coast was one for the weekend warriors. Hitting late Friday arvo, peaking Saturday, tapering oh-so-slowly on Sunday, with offshore winds all the way, it was a straight up weekend affair. So for all you 9-5 Monday to Friday crew, the surfers with no flexibility who rely on the weather Gods to deliver on the only two days you get to surf, that swell was for you. Hope you gorged yourself stupid.

Odd Waves On The Surf Coast

Hi Stuart,

I saw the gloating re: the recent east coast swell. Just wanted to point out that "down south" we have had the odd wave or two, enough to tempt me to drive across the bridge and head down to the home of surfing. Just another day at the office for us.

PS: Will be cranking tomorrow too...

On The Boil

Before I begin: you'll have to excuse the East Coast-centric content of late, it's been pumping here. Hope all you surfers from elsewhere have been getting some too.

Mr Price Pro - Early Rounds

The surf hasn't been so hot for the early rounds of the Mr Price Pro at Ballito, South Africa. You know, 3-4 feet, bit sideshore, you could take it or leave it. But this is a 6-Star Prime, one of only eight this year, so we figured we may as well run a few shots. Don't expect much, it's bog standard 'QS comp surfing in ordinary waves. I hope we haven't wasted your time.

Anyhoo, the organisers say there's swell coming and that's good news for everyone. See you soon.

While You Were Working

Do you live in Sydney? Did you have to go to work early today? Maybe you had a meeting or maybe you had to leave home early to beat the peak hour rush.

Well, because we like to keep you in touch with what's happening at the beach here is what you missed.

You're welcome.
