Coleman Hughes: The Empirical Problems with Systemic Racism

"What is the difference between individual, institutional, and systemic racism? What are the empirical problems with systemic racism? Coleman Cruz Hughes writes on the topic of race for Quillette and the New York Times."

* There was a discussion about systemic racism recently but I haven't kept up with threads to know where it was, so just putting it here because he's from the USA.

"...Mr. Quinn began studying footage of looting from around the country and saw the same black outfits and, in some cases, the same masks. He decided to go to a protest dressed like that himself, to figure out what was really going on. He expected to find white supremacists who wanted to help re-elect President Trump by stoking fear of Black people. What he discovered instead were true believers in “insurrectionary anarchism.”"

"...Mr. Quinn discovered a thorny truth about the mayhem that unfolded in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man in Minneapolis. It wasn’t mayhem at all.

While talking heads on television routinely described it as a spontaneous eruption of anger at racial injustice, it was strategically planned, facilitated and advertised on social media by anarchists who believed that their actions advanced the cause of racial justice. In some cities, they were a fringe element, quickly expelled by peaceful organizers. But in Washington, Portland and Seattle they have attracted a “cultlike energy,” Mr. Quinn told me."

"...If that is not enough to convince you that there’s a method to the madness, check out the new report by Rutgers researchers that documents the “systematic, online mobilization of violence that was planned, coordinated (in real time) and celebrated by explicitly violent anarcho-socialist networks that rode on the coattails of peaceful protest,” according to its co-author Pamela Paresky. She said some anarchist social media accounts had grown 300-fold since May, to hundreds of thousands of followers."

"...There’s an even thornier truth that few people seem to want to talk about: Anarchy got results.

Don’t get me wrong. My heart broke for the people in Minneapolis who lost buildings to arson and looting. Migizi, a Native American nonprofit in Minneapolis, raised more than $1 million to buy and renovate a place where Native American teenagers could learn about their culture — only to watch it go up in flames, alongside dozens of others, including a police station. It can take years to build a building — and only one night to burn it down."

"...“As a Black woman who has been working on this for 30 years, to have young white activists who have just discovered that Black lives matter yelling at me that I’m not doing enough for Black people — it’s kind of ironic, is what it is,” Ms. Hardesty told me.

In Seattle, Andrè Taylor, a Black man who lost his brother to police violence in 2016, helped change state law that made it nearly impossible to prosecute officers for killing civilians. But he has been branded a “pig cop” by young anarchists because his nonprofit organization receives funds from the city, and because he cooperates with the police.

“When they say, ‘You are working with the police,’ I say, ‘I have worked with police and I will continue to work for reform,’” Mr. Taylor told me. “Remember, I lost a brother.”

Black people get shot for doing ordinary law-abiding things. They don’t have the luxury of anarchy, he told me."

"...That’s the thing about “insurrectionary anarchists.” They make fickle allies. If they help you get into power, they will try to oust you the following day, since power is what they are against. Many of them don’t even vote. They are experts at unraveling an old order but considerably less skilled at building a new one. That’s why, even after more than 100 days of protest in Portland, activists do not agree on a set of common policy goals.

Even some anarchists admit as much.

“We are not sure if the socialist, communist, democratic or even anarchist utopia is possible,” a voice on “The Ex-Worker” podcast intones. “Rather, some insurrectionary anarchists believe that the meaning of being an anarchist lies in the struggle itself and what that struggle reveals.”

In other words, it’s not really about George Floyd or Black lives, but insurrection for insurrection’s sake."

interesting proud boys vid patrick, and story of the A house

...the more things change...

the thing that amazes me about the proud boys is how boringly insignificant they seem to be. every time they are hyped up, or they are hyping themselves up, is just amazes me that about 50 beer drinking bogans turn up

and from that vid, they are just a bunch of beer drinking bogans... all 50 of them!

surely grouping these guys with 'far right groups' is one of the dumbest things ever that kind of undermines the wider argument?

I dare say they are not yet responsible for one single murder?

their gig seems to be more about male chauvinism, god, beer, and the constitution than anything else...

some very well tanned 'white supremicists' in there too!! ...the leader in particular, who seems very articulate and reasonable

all looks like another case of boy who cried wolf from the usual suspects to me...

totally agree re. mobs, too many people of either sex in one room seems to always be rather 'problematic'

Defamation - the action of damaging the good reputation of someone; slander or libel.

BB, “damaging the good reputation” . Is that the same “good reputation” whereby you describe and talk to people like
“Sad and pathetic losers”
“a loudmouth fuckwit”
“If you don’t like the tone here maybe just fuck off”
“describe ignorant arseholes in whatever language I feel appropriate”
“fucking turd with ears”
“a shallow self-centred piece of shit”
“Crawl back in your hole and die.”

Yep, that sure is some “good” reputation right there.

Being accused of smoking crack or being a paedophile is more damaging to the reputation than an accusation of verbally abusing anonymous internet commentators who neither have, nor deserve, protection from defamation and who, in most, if not all, cases started the abuse either over the history of the site, or more immediately in the discussion. Thanks for the selection, it's a bit stereotyped isn't it? I really should use more imagination in future.

'I can't believe nobody came up with the old line.

"It doesn't matter how much milk you put in coffee it's still coffee"

Which well is not true at some point it just becomes coffee flavour milk.'

In the transparent light of this truth:

'Ms Abdo said it was very worrying.

"We are all concerned. You are actually sitting in a cafe in a group, you would think that is the safest place to be. We are all trying to deal with it."

The assault occurred in the week a study was released showing women wearing headscarves were at the most risk of Islamophobic attacks.

"We are mothers, wives, daughters … and we deserve to feel safe wherever we go," Ms Elasmar said.

"I fear for the world our children will grow up in, if this issue is not addressed."

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-23/pregnant-muslim-woman-speaks-out-...

'Mr Neville [the Chief Protector of WA] holds the view that within one hundred years the pure black will be extinct. But the half-caste problem was increasing every year. Therefore their idea was to keep the pure blacks segregated and absorb the half-castes into the white population. Sixty years ago, he said, there were over 60,000 full-blooded natives in Western Australia. Today there are only 20,000. In time there would be none. Perhaps it would take one hundred years, perhaps longer, but the race was dying. The pure blooded Aboriginal was not a quick breeder. On the other hand the half-caste was. In Western Australia there were half-caste families of twenty and upwards. That showed the magnitude of the problem (quoted by Buti 1995 on page 35).

In Neville's view, skin colour was the key to absorption. Children with lighter skin colour would automatically be accepted into non-Indigenous society and lose their Aboriginal identity.'

'Every morning our people would crush charcoal and mix that with animal fat and smother that all over us, so that when the police came they could only see black children in the distance. We were told always to be on the alert and, if white people came, to run into the bush or run and stand behind the trees as stiff as a poker, or else hide behind logs or run into culverts and hide. Often the white people - we didn't know who they were - would come into our camps. And if the Aboriginal group was taken unawares, they would stuff us into flour bags and pretend we weren't there. We were told not to sneeze. We knew if we sneezed and they knew that we were in there bundled up, we'd be taken off and away from the area.'

https://humanrights.gov.au/our-work/bringing-them-home-chapter-2

'Headed by former High Court Judge Sir Ronald Wilson, the inquiry released its report, entitled Bringing Them Home, in April 1997. It has been surrounded by controversy ever since. Its most spectacular conclusion: the forcible removal of indigenous children from their homes constituted genocide.'

'As indigenous peoples increasingly assert by resort to international legal mechanisms claims of past and ongoing mistreatment at the hands of colonial authorities and their inheritors, some governments are being forced to acknowledge the uncomfortable truth that genocide has not been isolated to specific ruptures such as the Holocaust and Rwanda, or to "culturally relative" bloodletting. Two cases draw our attention to the dilemma: Australia's "stolen generation" of forcibly removed children of mixed Aboriginal and white descent, and the systemic abuses of aboriginal children in Canada's residential schools. An Australian government investigation into the former characterized the forcible removals as genocide, a charge greeted with considerable derision and acrimony. Meanwhile, reports dealing with Native experiences in Canada's residential schools have produced similarly sensationalist claims. As Australia and Canada slowly come to grips with the grim reality of the impact of European arrival on indigenous populations, the notion of Convention-mandated intervention is being turned on its head.

The "Stolen Generation"

On August 2, 1995 Australian Attorney General Michael Lavarch ordered Australia's Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) to conduct an investigation into the forcible separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities. Headed by former High Court Judge Sir Ronald Wilson, the inquiry released its report, entitled Bringing Them Home, in April 1997. It has been surrounded by controversy ever since. Its most spectacular conclusion: the forcible removal of indigenous children from their homes constituted genocide. According to the report, forcible removals occurred throughout the county, varying in scale "according to the period, the available resources and the visibility of...children of `mixed descent'." Although the report could not pinpoint exact numbers of affected children, it did state that from 1910 to 1970, "between one in three and one in ten indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and communities," and that in some instances "the figure was undoubtedly much greater than one in ten."(1)'

Dude I'm really not interested in having a discussion with you, the whole indigenous and race topic has been done to death here, and you aren't capable of having a mature discussion or debate anyway, you just troll and abuse and are like a broken record most of doesn't even make any sense.

If you want to see how a proper civil debate or discussion is done on the topic, go dig up the thread with Brutus from the other month, now there is a man that i might not always agree with but respect highly and not only because of his shaping skills but im talking about how he conducts himself here and just how he goes about things.

If you hadn't noticed this thread is about the USA sure things might divert a little but in general people try to keep discussion relevant to the USA, if you want to bang on about your pet topics (we all have them) with the same endless trolling start a new thread or at least take it to a thread that cover's various topics.

If the “ChinaFlu” does actually kill the US president, then I’d anticipate Americans wanting some form of revenge.
It’s possible 2021 could get messier than this year

Shoredump. If Trump dies, I'd say any response will be earlier than 2021. It won't be an official national response. The USA won't be going to war, but Trump's idiot cult following will want revenge.
Here's a tip. If Trump dies, don't go to any Chinatown in the USA for dinner for a while.

Speaking of Biden.

Anyone watch 60 minutes last night, OMG the guy is a total sleaze bag.

Yes we all know Trump is too, they seem as bad as each other in that way.

"Yes we all know Trump is too, they seem as bad as each other in that way."

Indo you do realise that if you continue to stick your head in the sand you are in grave danger of getting your arse kicked (in a totally metaphorical, meme-like non-violent way of course, not that I can guarantee that, I mean if you wave your arse around long enough someone could, potentially actually decide to physically kick it in a violent manner. Not that I am threatening that or suggesting in anyway that it is a reasonable thing to do)

Shoredump, if Trump dies it's gonna be Dan Andrews' fault. Try to keep up.

...speaking of biden

biden, obama, and the clinton corporation got the middle east so wrong... so so wrong...

their efforts to 'democratise' various middle east countries was so misguided. all they ended up doing, was to empower the muslim brotherhood into a vacuum, and encourage Irani inspired terrorism

I know some cannot admit it, but it appears trump has got some of the big picture stuff right regarding the middle east, and unfortunately, these guys cannot see a biden administration following through with his plan

whatever their reasons and allegiances, the middle east would be a bloody disaster if biden got in and went back on these recent developments

interesting listening

Ok Blowfly so your cool with Biden's history of sleazy inappropriate hands wandering all over women including an unwanted penetration with his finger of a women.

Like i said Trumps a sleaze bag, but clearly Biden is too.

Anyway here is the episode i was talking about, but plenty of articles talking about all the other women who have come forward.

IMHO guys like that dont change either, it's a power thing.

Never mind the US political class, there was a lot of inappropriate commentary on here over the weekend. Please keep real names out of posts and go easy on the abuse.

It's interesting to see how or if Trump getting Covid will affect the election in any way or just affect peoples view of Covid.

He might actually be able to use this to his advantage, seeing he is a 74 year old overweight guy and seems like he is doing okay. (although still a bit early to say 100% for certain)

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-06/donald-trump-coronavirus-to-leave...

Here is his latest tweet (from article, i dont use twitter)

"I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!"

Remember, he's also getting the very best medical treatment, far above anything the average US punter could afford.

Speaking from personal experience "IMHO guys like that don't change either, it's a power thing". Whenever I go to Dandy Markets I feel sort of energised, more powerful if you like and especially so when I see a woman wearing Muslim headdress that's when I get a feeling of grandeur and firmness in the downstairs department so much so I just want to knock her over.
