Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 17th February)

Best Days: All regions Saturday, the South West Sunday

Recap

The start of some new swell yesterday morning across the South West with 3-4ft sets and offshore winds, while some larger energy was seen into the afternoon as winds tended more S'ly.

Today a much larger and stronger S/SW groundswell was building across the South West, with clean 6ft+ waves this morning, now kicking to 8-10ft (screengrab below).

Mandurah saw clean 2-3ft sets, with 2ft waves around Perth, producing a great day of waves across most of the state.

We should see the S/SW swell peak this afternoon in the South West to a consistent 10ft as winds tend more SE.

This weekend and next week (Feb 18 - 24)

Today's large and powerful S/SW groundswell should peak this afternoon/evening, but the weekend is looking great across the South West of the state.

The swell is expected to drop from 6-8ft in the South West tomorrow morning, down further from the 4ft range Sunday morning, while Perth should ease from 2ft, with 2-3ft sets in Mandurah again.

Winds tomorrow look great with a straight offshore and fresh E'ly breeze, tending variable into the afternoon, while Sunday should see a lighter E/NE tending variable breeze ahead of late afternoon sea breezes.

It'll be all over come Monday with a surface trough bringing an onshore S/SW change along with small to tiny amounts of leftover swell.

Monday's change will be linked to a weak front pushing up towards us, and this should generate a weak mid-period SW swell for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

The South West is expected to build to the 6ft range but with poor S/SW winds, with onshore 2ft waves around Perth.

The swell should ease from a similar size Wednesday morning with lighter breezes (offshore around Perth).

A secondary stronger but less favourably aligned polar front should produce a good S/SW groundswell for Friday morning across the state along with an offshore breeze. We'll have a closer look at this Monday though. Have a great weekend!
