Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 2nd June)

Best Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday through Sunday around Perth and Gero

Recap

Options were limited on Saturday as winds freshened from the N/NE across most spots, although Perth saw a period of more favourable offshore winds with a drop in swell from Friday.

Sunday was poor and onshore in the South West, while Perth and Gero saw favourable winds during the morning before tending light onshore into the afternoon.

Today a new W/SW swell has kept Perth in the 2ft range with 4-5ft sets around Gero and 4-6ft surf in the South West as poor conditions continued.

This week (Jun 2 - 8)

A solid increase in SW groundswell is still on track tomorrow with 6ft to occasionally 8ft sets due in the South West, 2-3ft waves in Perth and 4-5ft+ waves developing into the afternoon up around Gero. This swell has been generated by a strong mid-latitude low that's currently clipping the South West.

Winds should ease and tend variable across the Margs region tomorrow morning but the surf will have a lot of lump and wobble to it from overnight onshores. Perth and Gero look much better though with offshore E/SE winds ahead of weak sea breezes.

A steady drop in swell after the peak is due and this will continue into Wednesday as winds persist from the E/SE around Gero and Perth, while Margs will likely see light variable winds from the NE to NW with a weak front pushing clipping the state.

Thursday and Friday look better as a couple of pulses of large W/SW groundswell fill in.

These pulses are being produced by a series of vigorous frontal systems firing up in the Southern Indian Ocean south-east of South Africa and Madagascar. The strongest system is already weakening, with a long-period and inconsistent swell due to arrive through Thursday and build strongly ahead of a peak Friday when a medium-range swell will also fill in at the same time. The medium-range swell is being generated by a mid-latitude front that's currently north of Heard Island but this system will weaken overnight.

Size wise, the South West should build to 6ft+ later Thursday with 2-3ft sets in Perth and 4-5ft waves up at Gero ahead of a peak Friday to 6-8ft, 3ft and 4-6ft respectively.

Winds on Thursday should improve around Margs again, swinging offshore from the E/NE during the morning, while Friday will see winds tipping more NE, limiting options.

This weekend onwards (Jun 9 onwards)

Friday's swell should ease through Saturday as winds go even more N/NE, similar to the weekend just gone. Another large pulse of W/SW groundswell is due through Sunday although winds are a little unsure due to the system generating the swell clipping the state at some stage. This change may be weak, but we'll have to confirm this on Wednesday.

Beyond this the outlook is a little unsure with the models diverging on the strength of a large blocking high across the Australia and a mid-latitude low forming off our coast, but check back for an update on Wednesday.
