More E swell on the way

James KC

Sydney Hunter Illawarra Surf Forecast by James Casey (issued Monday 10th May)

Best Days: Looking like a good week but Thursday, Friday best

Outlook:

  • A trough will move in late tonight keeping winds mostly offshore for the next few days and providing 2-3ft of E swell for Tuesday/Wednesday
  • The swell will turn more E/NE on Thursday/Friday with 3-4ft of E/NE swell
  • A front will bring SW winds for the weekend and a S swell filling in around the 3-4ft mark for S swell magnets for Sunday

Recap

Well if you didn’t get some decent sessions last weekend you missed out. It was biggest Saturday morning, slowly easing throughout the weekend, although never really eased below 3-4ft.

Today it is 3ft with winds offshore. It's another good day to get amongst it if you aren’t already surfed out.

This week

Well models have changed with the strong front that was looking like rolling through Monday night now looking like a trough. This trough looks to stall south of Sydney allowing a few more days of good winds.

The trough will stall close to the coast but far enough out to sea to bring light and mostly offshore winds. Further out to sea, E winds will filter into the eastern side of the trough and deliver waves in the 2-3ft range tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday, a little bigger for the South Coast as it is closer to the fetch.

Expect winds to remain offshore remaining out of the W/NW tomorrow (Tuesday) and swinging around to the SW on Wednesday morning, tending more SE later in the day.

Thursday into Friday we will see the swell kick up to 3-4ft and tend a bit more E/NE as the trough shifts further N. Again the South Coast will see larger waves with a better aligned fetch.

Winds will be moderate out of the W/SW on Thursday and get stronger, but still W/SW, on Friday as a trough ahead of a front moves in.

The weekend

A strong front will move in on Saturday bringing gusty SW winds becoming lighter and more W on Sunday.

This front will deliver a new S swell for the weekend, a little windswelly on Saturday but filling in on Sunday around the 3-4ft mark for S swell magnets.

Tune in for an update on Wednesday.

The sustained duration of this swell out of the East is def unusual for this time of year.
