Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 30th May)

Best Days: Saturday morning at south swell magnets, possibly later Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday morning

Recap

Yesterday's increase in S'ly swell came along with onshore winds and there weren't any decent options to get a wave in.

Today however a stronger secondary S/SE groundswell came in slightly above expectations but near model forecasts with 3-4ft waves across open beaches with an offshore breeze. The swell should of eased later today as sea breezes kicked in.

This weekend and next week (May 31st – Jun 6)

We're heading into an active period of NE swell from Sunday onwards, but before we get there, tomorrow should still provide small waves in the wake of today's swell. South swell magnets should offer 2ft sets and winds are expected to be favourable early with a morning NW'ly.

As we head into Sunday our stormy increase in NE windswell is still on track, but the longevity of this swell has been extended as the surface trough generating it sits off our coast for 4 or so days.

The trough will start to develop off the Southern NSW Coast on Saturday and then extend down to us through Sunday while strengthening.

A broad fetch of increasing NE winds will be aimed through our north-east swell window and remain there through Monday while reaching a peak in intensity. Into Tuesday the system will start slipping south-east resulting in the swell swinging more E/NE in direction through Wednesday while easing.

Size wise north-east facing beaches should reach 3-4ft later Sunday and offer bigger 5ft sets Monday and Tuesday before easing from 3-4ft Wednesday. Winds will be poor and strong from the NE Sunday and Monday but come Tuesday, as the trough starts drifting south-east winds should improve, swinging NW later in the day. Wednesday will be the day to surf though as winds swing offshore from the W/SW.

Into the end of the week the swell will continue to ease out of the E/NE due to the trough breaking down, but open beaches should still offer clean 2ft+ sets Thursday morning.

Longer term there's a couple of swell possibilities but we'll run through them on Monday. Have a great weekend.
