Yesterday I lamented the lack of political leadership on this topic and today's discussion by some only reconfirms my view.

Optimist in his light dismissal from yesterday of the importance Aboriginal culture that predates his god allegedly walking the earth by at least 40,000 years doubles down today with some spurious population projections of the continent for what purpose? Whatever the motive it seems his blind faith allows him to suspend all trust in science .... not sure if this was a vague slap down of evolution over creationism or what, the man is seemingly very confused.

info-warrior, oh sweet mother of the baby jebus give me thy penance on earth. Swellnet's village idiot par excellence. Seems to be really struggling with the topic, maybe there isn't any material on youtoob for him to use, unlike the other day where he linked us to an extreme right wing whack job who has been permanently banned from FB and Insta for hate speech .... and yet, here's the funny bit he's crying foul today about people not engaging him with substance. Oh the irony, the info-warrior can't readily distinguish shit from substance yet calls others out for rightly telling him to pull his head in. Monty Python couldn't script it better.

@ Guy

You are full of shit as per normal

If Scomo showed leadership and said either

1. The majority of Australians don't want Australia day changed so give it a rest the date isn't changing so respect the wishes of the majority,

or

2. Said okay let's sort it out and put it to a vote to end this debate.

You would be the first whinging here, you only like leadership when it favours your own view and have a funny view of leadership anyway, (words/appearances rather than action)

You are typical of the far left you are so arrogant and self righteous that you believe your view is so right that you wouldn't even support a public vote on the issue.

Anyway its pretty obvious that you have lived a very sheltered life and live in a complete bubble, you are a classic example of what is wrong with western society.

BTW. I have no issues with that You tuber but although i shared the video im not really a fan, I just dont like his delivery style and he is kind of too aggressive, funny i dont recall you saying much when Sypkan shared his video's here? (atleast twice from memory)

Anyway this whole censorship thing and labelling anything and everything as hate speech isn't going to just hurt conservative views.

Aaahhh...the old “ there is no such thing as Australian culture “ line.

Just like there’s no Australian accent *....

Culture is best appreciated with contrast. If you’ve ever visited another country and thought ( for example ) - “ Oh really ? Men and women here aren’t allowed to bathe at the beach together because women are considered unclean and sent by the devil to tempt virtuous men who are but victims to uncontrollable urges of lust ? That’s very different ! “. Then you have just discovered something about your own culture through the power of exclusionary deduction.

* accent is a symbolic morphing of language used by members of a culture or community to signify membership and reinforce unity .

Get a dog up ya !

Info-warrior,

The options available to Morrison aren't limited to the two you mention. It's not an either / or argument. There is nuance in this and every other issue of public office.

In layman terms when I say leadership I mean someone who is prepared to take a stand on an issue and is prepared to argue the case, to listen to all views, to explain why its important, to put their head above the pack, open themselves up to criticism and ultimately lead people or a business or a community or a country forward, to progress that case. Inherent in what I see as leadership is people being persuaded by the arguments and therefore willingly follow the idea and leader.

Now, I'm struggling to name a modern day politician that meets what I see as leadership. In my working life I worked for lots of mangers but only a handful of genuine leaders. They stand out from the pack.

So on the issue of Australia Day or any other current issue you or anybody could name where is our PM? Is he managing or leading? .... and that is what I mean by leadership or the lack thereof.

"Plenty of relics from a past that never existed here terrified of change, growing up and becoming a human."

Imagine if someone said this about another groups culture, imagine if someone said the same about indigenous culture.

Every group of people has a culture, sure at times it can be hard to define and yes there is an evolution of culture, the fact that our culture is kind of thin to me only enforces the importance for us to protect things like Australia day, Anzac day, Melbourne Cup etc

Surely these are things that we can all agree on are part of our culture?

It should be limited to those two options, because any other option goes against the wishes of the majority of the Australian people.

Yep this is the exact attitude that is the problem.

Offcourse it's part of Australian culture it's a Australian cultural event that dates back to 1861 and as we know is often called the race that stops the country, its a day where people who generally don't care less about horse racing or betting, get involved in some way, i remember even as a kid at school it was broadcast over the loudspeakers, and i expect most of us have gone to the museum and seen Pharlap etc

Culture isn't always an everyday thing like food, language, art, song it also includes days and events unique to that culture/country.

Indo - I think the Melbourne Cup is a great example of Australian culture . I think it’s power to define our culture comes down to the fact that it is JUST A FCKN HORSE RACE and yet it stops the nation .

Literally stops the nation . I’ve worked on remote infrastructure projects run by US corporate behemoths who have no problem demanding workers tie down for a cyclone in torrential rain and gale force winds on Christmas Day but who realise they are fighting a losing battle if they think that work isn’t stopping whilst the Geegees gallop and the rich midgets hang on for dear life.

The reason Melbourne Cup is such an important event is because it’s a nationwide collusion to bludge for a bit and it’s the bludging which is the true cultural touchstone.

Australia was formed when a dozen odd ships of unwilling and inadequately supervised punters were sent to the other side of the globe to work. Whilst being forced to work they were exposed to the entirely different culture of the blackfellas who seemed to lead a pretty decent existence without working at all . This informed the thinking and attitudes of the newly minted Australians. So it was that our culture is a unique blend of the European work ethic with its productive rewards and the South Pacific idle full survivalist of only working when you damn well had to to exist and enjoying the rest of your time.

Whilst Australians work hard , Aussies also love a holiday , a smoko , a sickie , a bludge and a pisstake . You’ve only got to read a bit of history about the development of Australia’s working utopia with our short work weeks , extended holidays and sick leave to understand that we differ from the British example they’d have us follow.

That’s the cultural significance of the Melbourne Cup - it’s a metaphor for our dedication to leisure and our awareness of the importance of life amongst the work. It’s a moment of unity when we all tacitly agree to stop whatever we are doing, kick back and do fck all for a bit under the flimsy pretence that we pretend to give a fck about a horse race running 4000 kms away

When I look around these days I tend to see more Americanisation BS creeping in, our language is full of American phrases, flag waving FFS is American nothing cynically Australian about that etc.

But then that's change so be it .

On Australia day it should belong to all clearly currently it isn't since the date is marking the arrival of the British, I don't mind if people want to celebrate that but saying its Australia day is really dressing up a pig and saying she hot.

I guess some people are into pigs.

Personally I only have ever seen the day as a day off long weekend if the date doesn't work for some no big deal change it as long as the long weekend remains...priorities.

BTW. Interesting little fact, on average Indigenous players make up just over 10% of AFL players, while in the Australian community indigenous people only make up 2.8% of the population.

This is a public website. Anyone can jump on this website and read what these forums contain. The beauty of these forums is people can freely say what they want, without censorship, generally speaking.
Something i feel strongly about is that there are many indigenous surfers around this country, just like us. We're all brothers and sisters....well so i thought.
Theres already a few on here.
What's say a young grommet from a small aboriginal community that loves surfing and is looking for a place to feed his/her surfing brain, stumbles across swellnet and is enthralled by the content! And there is so much good content on here on surfing. Now imagine that same grommet who has found his place in the surfing world and feels it is a place where all the other bullshit outside of surfing doesn't exist, but then comes across this...
by DRex 'Every thing we take for granted in our society is due to the arrival of Europeans. Surfing would not exist and aborigines would still be living in the Stone Age. So thank your lucky stars for Capt Cook." How would that make you feel? Reckon you wouldn't feel like an outsider, less than human.
I'll tell you one thing for certain, if you said that in front of an aboriginal kid, while i was standing there, you wouldn't be saying much again for a long time. Spineless fucks
So yeah, i'm gonna be pretty vocal about this because you lot are spreading poison that could be affecting people in ways you don't even realise. It's that ripple effect.
The sad thing is, there's nothing to be done about you lot. You'll never actually educate yourselves, but spout off hateful, illconsidered trash, that you have no idea who could be reading it and how it could affect everything in their lives.
Fuck yas.
