It'll be interesting to see if the tech is allowed to take off... Can't imagine it'd be in reach of most people short term unless subsidised (prices probably would drop if there's enough takeup to scale up manufacturing, but you've gotta get to that point first), and what chance of that happening while fossil fuel lobbies still have sway?

Hmm that interesting on the carbon batteries and Hydrogen too.

Watched these videos the other week quite interesting its on a similar topic about the need for batteries based on cheaper elements than cobalt & lithium etc

Some really good stuff on the same channel on hydrogen, it's a good channel doesn't get political and doesn't sugar coat shit either, they get technical but explain things so everyday people can understand it all.

Can anyone confirm whether it was Tracks ( the surfer’s bible ) or Surfer magazine ( the bible of the sport ) which first bestowed the holy moniker on itself ?

I’m positive it was Tracks because It’s not very Aussie to plagiarise whilst it’s very Seppo to usurp a canny idea from a “ provincial “ imposter as they always considered themselves to be the centre of the world and therefore entitled.

Tell me I’m wrong. Or not.

That was in 2000, however I have a sense of reading it before that, when it was Tabloid size.

Tracks vs Surfer ?

There can be only one. Of course it’s Tracks . I didn’t really rate Surfer. Let the Holy Moniker origins story settle the argument once and for all.

We’ve got to get serious and stop these American wankers.

I thought Surfer was a great magazine and cool to see the contrast between Australia and America. I liked when Surfer would do an article on their local waves.

Did Jim Hogan grapple with Occy over his infamous comment ? Jim Hogan had a kind of zappy surfing style didn’t he ?

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, maybe it was all just manufactured drama of a nationalist bent, but I've got video here somewhere of Hogan at a Burleigh Stubbies around '84 fiercely defending his countrymen's honour - sorry, honor.

And there's also a few stories from Occy's swaggering youth, one of them of wanting to fight Hogan till he backed down when he heard about his success as a wrestler back home, and the other story that he found out too late.

Jim Hogan, name from the past. I used to have one of the Stubbies comps on VHS. Carrol slipped against Curren .. literally, and lost, and Jim Hogan was talking about the rise of the Americans, and how Curren would be world champ, and when he done it .. then that's it ... there will be more to follow. He was right with the last point.

Not sure who receives the weekly Swellnet email from Stunet. Anyway they are a good read and this one says something to myself which is very timely. Hit Swellnet up if you don’t receive yours each weekend.

Take it away Stunet :

Each year, when January rolls around I draft up a list of vague new year’s resolutions.

Vague because when they inevitably get broken I don’t get too down on myself. I mean, why beat yourself up when you were only half-serious anyway?

This year, one of my resolutions is to rise above the whole FOMO phenomena - or Fear Of Missing Out - and to see FOMO for the deceit that it is.

Which, if you’ll excuse a moment of earnestness, is a consumerist fiction about ‘having it all’, that once unpacked says happiness and satisfaction can only arise from external matters.

Which, as the Buddha wisely said, is bullshit.

Not three weeks into the new year and on Wednesday my resolve was tested. Last week, Ben forecast a very big swell to hit my coast late Tuesday and early Wednesday, and I was suitably excited at the prospect of a big, clean south swell in summer.

I checked the local on Tuesday afternoon and the needle hadn’t budged. Never mind, I thought to myself, it’ll be here tomorrow.

Rising early Wednesday I wondered about the lack of sound from the east. Its absence was explained after I pulled into the dark carpark, empty save for the two cars belonging to the two Phil’s, who both wanted to know where the hell the swell was.

No swell? I didn’t believe them. The swell was a gimme, a slam dunk, and it wasn’t just the wave models that agreed, there was evidence via ASCAT readings and photos from Tassie taken the day before.

None of that computed with the dire view in front of me, but there you go. We were missing out. I was missing out. Let the testing times begin.

I was proud of the way I handled myself in the aftermath of the missing swell. Disappointed, sure, but I took a philosophical view noting joy and stoke are but fleeting, and I wasn’t a lesser person for missing out on good waves. Anyway, in a week’s time it’d all be memories yet I’d still have to deal with my real nature.

It sounds convincing, right? But is that rationale enough? Could a lifetime of abstinence really lead to happiness?

Don’t ask me, I only had to hold the belief for eight or so hours, because by then the late-running swell showed its head and I was getting barreled across the local ledge.

But I’m still counting it as a win, and my vague resolution remains intact.

Hope y’all got some - yet if you didn’t, never fear.

- Stu

Blowin couldn't agree more, not sure WTF it is but Stu's writing always speaks to me no matter the subject, is it Stu the philosopher, writer, surfer, family man, dog owner or simply Stu the human?

Stu often expresses what I would like to say except I don't have the intellect or depth.

BTW Ben is not bad either, thanks to all the crew employed that contribute to the vibe that flows from the Swellnet heart.

Good day today. Sun shining, few little waves, however the big occasion was a birthday bike ride for Jetty legend Jason Gava which turned into the inaugural ride for the Sandon Point Boardriders bike club. Thirty strong crew hammered the trails behind Bulli and Thirroul, finishing with a downhill run all the way to the front bar at Bulli Heritage.

This is really interesting, don't know if it's been raised here:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/google-threatens-to-shut-down-in-australia-...

Considered it for a bit, thought the Gov was quite brave being the first to propose it (are we seeing Australia going it's own way on multiple fronts??), realised what it might mean for free sharing of links like this one:

The legislation has got Murdochs hands all over it.

When the announcement to shut down the AAP, which would have resulted in a less diverse media landscape, there was barely a peep out of the coalition and now all of a sudden it is an issue because Murdoch is losing too much revenue

Dunno if you'd call it interesting but...

After a session last Thursday I noticed a slight itch across my inner and upper thighs. Sea lice. Over the years I've been bitten many times but never particularly bothered by them so I scratched the itch and carried on.

By evening the itch had spread up one hip to my stomach, and also around the nether regions, with another outbreak under my right arm spreading up to my shoulder and across my back. Clearly got bitten more than I thought but, again, no big deal.

Friday morning all the effected area started coming out in welts, not large ones, but we're talking quantity over quality - they were fucken everywhere - and the itchability ramped up a notch, from a gentle appeal for attention to a demand for sharp fingernails now.

Trying to sleep has been an ordeal with overnight temps in the low-twenties, no wind, and high humidity. Twice since Friday I've had to take a cold shower through the night for relief then laid back down soothed but wide awake. May as well have necked a midnight coffee.

By yesterday all the heads had been scratched off the easy to reach welts and they were weeping, while the ones across my back were spared by virtue of being almost impossible to reach, and hence the most torturous of all.

The wife won't come near me cos my skin's a mix of teenage acne outbreak cum venereal disease victim and I stink like vinegar - which doesn't work BTW.

Gimme a bluebottle sting any day.

Fuck it, I'd chance an Irukandji over this hell.

Not sure how this will all end up. It's worth having a look at the chart link below.

"And with Joe Biden comes more stimulus and stockmarket optimism, with US markets reaching new records overnight. Companies do not even need to make a profit now or in the near future to become extremely valuable. In the US, Goldman Sachs produces on index of non-profitable listed companies, mainly using a broad definition of tech, and it's a 5-bagger in less than a year. The index barely moved for the previous five years, showing how 2020 has taken investors into rarefied territory."

Yeah, never really bothered trying to treat them before, but this time I used vinegar but it did SFA.

Seems today, four days after they got me, the itching has eased.

Question for Ballina locals : What’s this local flooding of streets about ? Would you attribute it to rising sea levels or storm surge or erosion or ????

Some of streets in Ballina’s cbd or ‘the island’ flood on king tides.

The places in your link don’t flood monthly as far as I’m aware, just in big or prolonged weather events.

freeride76's picture
freeride76's picture
freeride76 Monday, 25 Jan 2021 at 2:21pm

Ballina CBD and low lying areas next to creeks and drains floods on tides over 1.8m which is most of the daytime summer new moon and winter night-time new moon high tides.
rainfall and low pressure/storm surges make it worse, but it's primarily a tide issue.
