Interesting that Eco's points 2,4,5,6,7 and 10 could easily be applied to regressive left Byron-style ideology.

Probably no. 12 as well but I think that's pretty universal.

Go broke, shut down or get bought up by other airlines.

The result being lack of competition and then we all suffer, remember how expensive airline travel use to be before budget airlines got involved?

Check out the list of Aussie airlines no longer around (I counted 54) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Defunct_airlines_of_Australia

The Indo list just as long will bring back a few memories for some too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_Indonesia

Pup, it was a quick think about tribalism.

Fascism is closely linked to tribalism and it's interesting to see the same thought processes play out with some of the "progressive" parts of society i.e. the post-truth crew in Byron and around the world.

Specifically, they're happy to throw out the baby (science and critical thinking) with the bathwater (the excesses of modern life), Eco's point 2.

From this point, disagreement is treason, point 4, and there is a fear of difference, point 5.
Naturally there are appeals to social frustrations, point 6.

Of course no one loves a plot like the tin-foil hat regressive left (point 7), and no one does elitism quite like them either (point 10).

Finally, there's definitely an impoverished vocabulary which (limit[s] the instruments for complex and critical reasoning”, (point 14) but I think this is unintentional and in any case, pretty much universal these days.

So are we headed in this general direction?

Hard to say but I think there's definitely a post-truth movement happening and the affects on rational discourse are pretty obvious, and hence why this is the "regressive left".

Mythical?

Absolutely not, or maybe only to those very much in their own little bubble.

It's clear that basic human reactions like tribalism can take us in interesting directions, some desirable and some not.

Andy, Eco's list, his entire oeuvre is deeply human. He is describing human traits. Humanity ripe for manipulation and exploitation. And seen as such.

And who is holding the actual levers of power again?

Here.

(Let's not even consider our biggest foreign investor, foreign landowner, military and economic and cultural partner and touchstone*)

That is the point. The political point. The existential point. Right here, right now.

Eco actually lived through Mussolini. His early politics should have been more properly called Corporatism, since it was the unabashed merger of state and corporate power. And we all saw where that mutated and went back then.

Who's up for some hyper neo-feudalism with a Strong Leader™ ? Just don't mention the F word.

You, me and Eco all understand that "humanity is ripe for manipulation and exploitation", I'm just pointing out that so-called fascist tendencies can apply across the political spectrum simply because they are basic human reactions.

I'm also saying don't underestimate the extent to which these reactions are already negatively affecting public discourse, even from the apparently righteous left.

And yes, these people have significant economic and social power - some would say they've already taken over Byron ;)

"And who is holding the actual levers of power again?"

This is a (often misguided) reaction to those who are holding the levers of power, hence throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

One day you’ll wake up and realise that China hid and enabled the virus , did their utmost to export it to Australia ( Direct diplomatic appeals backed by threats ) whilst looting our medical PPE .

And you’ll look at yourself in the mirror and think “ Was i really appeasing and apologising for an evil empire ? “

The answer is ....yes you were and yes you are.

Why not go take that look in the mirror now ? Cause every time you try to silence discussion on China with ridiculous cries of racism , or outlandish cultural relativism or any of your usual tactics , you are doing a great disservice to your fellow Australians.

It’s a CCP propaganda and disinformation campaign and you’re spreading it with glee .

Agreed. I've been harping on for years that everyone is misunderstanding China's intentions. Any attempt to have an adult discussion about it gets howled down with calls of "racist!".

To wit...the Chinese use this tactic more than any other. They know it's something we're all so scared of being called. Though more recently it seems to have worked less effectively. Disagree with the most COALition's key policies, but 100% behind what Mr Hastie is doing.

Self described Sinophile his whole life. Speaks the language fluently. Right up until he became PM when there was still a hint of public suspicion with regards to whether China would open itself to political reform as well as global trade.

Suddenly.....Kevin is the loudest voice in the room against China !

Kevin officially becomes persona non grata in Beijing.

Yet he still functioned as perhaps the purest conduit for Chinese interests in Australia.

Now he has left office he is once again an unapologetic cheerleader for the disgraced CCP regime. $1.4 Million per year* to act as their official “ Voice of reason “ in Australia.

Huh ?

What just happened ? If I didn’t know better , I’d say that it was preconceived that a Kevin not appear TOO pro-China during his tenure as PM lest it startle the herd. What better way to obfuscate his true nature than a WWE / West Coast -East Coast rapper style theatrical conflict ?
