Recap
The Mid Coast continued to offer 1.5ft waves both yesterday and today following Monday’s swell which pulsed to 2ft through the day. The South Coast however has been poor and onshore, a total write-off today.
This week and weekend (Jan 23 - 26)
A trough moving through yesterday evening has brought today’s stronger onshore winds, and this will move east tomorrow, allowing winds to ease and tend more E/NE tomorrow morning down South.
Swell wise it looks weak and peaky with a mix of easing S/SE windswell and small background S/SW energy to 2ft+ or so, easing through the day. The Mid looks to only come in around 1ft.
Friday will be a lay day with S’ly winds due to kick back in along with smaller levels of swell.
Now, moving into the weekend and there’s been some slight changes to the incoming SW swell.
There’s been a slight downgrade of the initial progression, but this will be supplemented by a secondary swell generating front moving in quickly on its tail.
The initial frontal system should generate a good fetch of gale-force W/NW winds while moving in from the Heard Island region today, weakening while moving under the country over the coming days.
The mid-period SW swell due from this first low is expected to build through Saturday, reaching 3-4ft across Middleton later, easing back temporarily from 3ft on Sunday morning. The Mid Coast isn’t due to see much size with infrequent 1ft to occasionally 1.5ft sets possible later Saturday and through Sunday.
A secondary pulse of slightly stronger SW groundswell is due into Sunday afternoon/Monday morning, produced by a secondary stronger, expanding frontal system moving in on the initial system's tail.
At this stage Middleton looks to kick to a strong 4ft Sunday afternoon, remaining tiny on the Mid Coast, easing back Monday from 3-4ft.
Winds for the weekend look favourable for both regions, light E/NE-NE down South on Saturday ahead of sea breezes with Sunday playing out similarly.
Come Monday an approaching frontal system will bring dawn N/NW winds that will quickly shift W/SW through the morning, stronger S/SW into the afternoon.
This change will be linked to a burgeoning low firing up to our south-west early next week, with it possibly generating a moderate to large S/SW groundswell for the middle of the week.
Unfortunately a high pressure ridge moving in behind the low will bring unfavourable south-southeast winds, but more on this Friday.
