Trestles Pro 2025: Day Two

Form Guide

Trestles is whittled down to a Finals Day after fourteen heats which have decided the Men's Quarter-Finalists and two of the Women's Semi-Finalists in waves a notch better than yesterday.

Any sense of stasis from opening day when the 2017 front-runners still looked avant-garde was wiped away today as Filipe Toledo, Jordy Smith, and Lakey Peterson were eliminated by younger opponents. Big consequences for Final 5 aspirants with a steadying of the ship for both Ethan Ewing and Jack Robinson after a turbulent Aussie Treble. The penny hasn't dropped yet but based on recent history it's likely we will have Jack in the five or Ethan, but not both. Neither of them have really been in consistent world title form this year but the only guy who did show consistent world title form, Italo Ferreira, has now been knocked by Aussie rookie Joel Vaughan.

Joel (WSL/Sharon)

It's hard to imagine a bigger form reversal. After coming into the Aussie leg thousands of points in front of his next rival, Italo has now lost to two wildcards not on tour and a retired Dad, to be followed up now by a loss in the Round of 16 to a rookie who had never surfed Trestles before this comp. Ballsy performance by Joel Vaughan. After a competent but unspectacular showing to get past Miggy Pupo yesterday, JV didn't look any chance to get past a guy who has won mutliple high pressure Finals Day heats at Trestles.

Classic Trestles opening gambit with Italo hassling hard for the peak, holding JV off the right and throwing a carve and two airs on the opening ride. By ten minutes in Italo had 14+ points on the rookie. Not a single sign of scoreboard pressure ensued in his answering rides. He loosed fins everywhere over the soft Lowers lip and launched the type of tail-high airs that saw him make the tour at Saquarema. Needing an 8+ ride on the buzzer, he got it to send Italo further down the rankings, possibly ending up as low as third by the end of Trestles.

That's the type of non-surf star showing that pro surfing dishes up regularly now. JV was a tow headed kid who'd never even surfed this joint and now he's sent a gold medallist and world champ packing in his first outing here. JV's simple formula “go big and risk it” was the antithesis of every bit of sickly safety surfing we've witnessed at pro tour level.

Filipe (WSL/Sharon)

That was sick, but amazingly the next heat eclipsed it. Filipe Toledo bought every ounce of Trestles magic to what should have been a Final with Griffin Colapinto. The sparky little quad looked like a jet-ski when he hit the bottom turn, the repertoire was expansive, everything was flowing and done with full throttle. He started strong and got stronger. He left Griff sitting out the back needing a huge score. When Griff overcooked a turn it looked over. Then Filipe made a vital error.

Two huge turns and a lofted air which he fell on. If Filipe made that air it was a 9+ ride. That opened the door for Griff with a two-wave set approaching on the minute countdown. Fil cleaned up his error with a clean air make. Griff on the better, cleaner second wave redeemed his conservative finals showings with three massive turns for a heat winning 8.93. The result made clear on the stones with Colapinto celebrating with hometown fans.

It was, he said, some relief from the “PTSD” he'd suffered after past Finals disappointments. Hearing the score announced on the stones “felt surreal”, he said before praising Filipe as a world class champion and thanking the WSL for coming back to Trestles which he claimed was "the real deal”.

Griff (WSL/Sharon)

You couldn't come to any other conclusion. The highest voltage performance surfing on the planet and something miraculous about the cadence of the sets which always seemed to arrive in sets of two as the clock counted down.

Someone else who had legitimate reason to have Trestles PTSD was Jack Robinson. Zero heat wins from three finals starts is not a good record. His small wave surfing looked inconclusive at Burleigh, and he had a rare complete mind melt at Margaret River as defending event champion. Jack had to stop the slide, and Leo was not an easy guy to do it against, especially when he laid down a full throated 8.50 to start. Jack responded with an air game. He kept popping them, judges kept paying them and he increased the amplitude each attempt. That win opened up a staggering 6-0 record over Leo, who has looked world title pace as often as anyone this year. That's probably the end of the line for him as far as world title aspirations go.

Jack (WSL/Sharon)

It was refreshing to hear Ethan after taking out Jake Marshall refer to his world title aspirations and not give us the usual 'one heat at a time, enjoying the moment' cliché. He wants a big result and he's said it now in consecutive pressers. Great, why else would you be there? He's not going to take to the air, according to him, he'll focus on his strengths and that also simplifies the game plan. Get on at least one of the best waves of the heat and rip it to shreds.

San Clemente kids might have taken umbrage yesterday at being described as behind the pace of guys who won Trestles a decade ago. They do read more than their own journal entries. After Griff's stirring W over Toledo, Cole Houshmand repeated the dose to Jordy Smith. Judging was not controversial today, and even with Jordy cheerleader Shaun Tomson in the booth there was really no way to spin it as anything but a clear victory to Cole. Apart from one fluffy right that Jordy carved into a million pieces there was a tangible distinction between the speed, risk, and repertoire of Houshmand and Jordy. Part of that was local knowledge. A creeping south wind made rights increasingly crumbly while the lefts stayed shorter but steeper. Just better for high performance turns.

Cole (WSL/Sharon)

Unlike three years of Trestles Finals Days, lots of lefts were spiked and scored today. Erin Brooks sailed past a downbeat Tyler Wright on the strength of a bowly left before being stopped by Caity Simmers, who still looks below her best.

This may sound harsh but we saw an inaccurate picture of Brooks surfing last year when she won Fiji. In small, cupped-out waves her single-focussed turn attack looks great. In anything else it looks short and janky and lacking flow and variety. It's a long off-season ahead and it's now increasingly likely Brooks will start hers in August once Teahupoo wraps. Would it be too impolite to suggest a month or two on a mid-length twin somewhere on a long point? Just as a means to relax and draw turns of varying arcs, let the body lean into and through the turn instead of relying on an exaggerated arm swing.

Erin (WSL/Sharon)

Two heats of women's Quarters done, with Caity past Erin and Molly over Lakey in a tight heat. We used to labour under the impression of parity during rounds so competitors wouldn't get different conditions or have to surf more often than others on Finals Day. That seems to be another thing jettisoned, perhaps as a result of JMD letting go of the reins.

We come back for Finals Day with the San Clemente kids in pole position and the Final 5 still wide open.

Looks like some people saw it differently, even controversially, like usual. I thought it was a bit closer than the final result, but as much as I like Jordy, the right man won that heat.

I must agree with Kong. I'm not sure about how to score that wave but it is so ugly to watch. I'm watching the reply now. I think the scoring was wacked. I'd give Jordy an 8.0 for his 1st scorer; there was a few thumping turns there, Col a 7.0 for this 1st, Jordy a 5.0 for his 2nd, therefore Col needs a 6.1 for the win. I'm not scoring that final wave. Its too ugly & pukey. Horrible.

absolutely! If Italo hadve won that heat, it woulda been a travisty. First 4 waves exactly the same with no variation in the slightest. JV's surfing was on another level today, pushing the envelop for variation and progression.

I'm old too yet I thought Connor O'Leary's blow tail thing - see image at top of page - was the best air I'd seen in ages. Relied on power and reflex, not skate-style grab trickery, and it's the type of move that can only be done in the surf, not replicable in any other board sport.

Only problem? Judges gave it 5.77.

Difficulty and innovation should see that move well above the 8 point mark, possibly higher. It's not quite an NBD but it's also not far off it either. Really, how many times, in both competition or video part, has a move like that been done? I can count one - R'Cal from his last video part. Which means, as far as I'm aware, an upside down blast like that (not a flat spin) has never been done in competition.

The only explanation is the judges just didn't know where to put it.

Yeah, that move was quite mind-blowing. In fact, it was so radical, I couldn't even comprehend what Conor did when I first saw him do it in real time. Even the replay had my eyes and gob wide open. If I were Dog, I'd be going to the head judge, and all the judges, with a slow mo replay of that move, and asking for some clarity on the low score. The judges surf good and some can do airs, no doubt. So ask them, have they ever done this move themselves before? Or have they seen anyone else do it? It should be scored much higher in terms of degree of difficulty, surprise and innovation.

What rubbish Italo cranks in good waves. Forehand at cloudy he could be unstoppable unless someone like robbo or yago et are there to eclipse him. Ethan Ewing unlikely Jordy has put in some pipe time in recent years so he’ll have. A crack. I’d still rate Italia chances

It looked like Erin Brooks was already taking heed of some coaching advice in her match-up against Tyler. She seemed to be delaying her bottom turn for an extra bit longer on the rights, so as to set in a bit more lateral rail for extended flow. Yeah, hers is still a work in progress, yet even as is, nonetheless quite brilliant to enjoy watching. Watch out world when she starts popping airs. I saw her attempting some big ones in the pre-comp warm-up vision. Wow!

I agree with the author. You don't need to coach her, just spend the downtime at some fishing village surfing a point all day. That will smooth out her surfing more than any coach will. She's still so young and that flaw is easy to fix IMO. Definately a different board as well, twin probably. Fuck it, a massive sack of weed as well and some mushrooms.

The answer definately isn't more coaching. I'd argue most today are over coached. I heard a great Hemingway quote yesterday "Write drunk, edit sober". So go free surf for ages on points, pay a filmer and then after a period, go and get it looked at by a coach.

Toledo is carving, flowing, poping 360 airs on quad fins, still the pro comp surfing world champion.

Griff skates for a 7.9 & 8.3 to win?
Italo surfed easy flowing 360's for a 7.8 & 6.8 (to lose) within 20min... then mapplewatch results forced him to push too hard....?

Skate sliding & 180'slides for 7.8 & 8.5 for win?

I think the judges got both decisions right, despite their overscoring. Vaughan's 2nd scorer was sick and easily the wave of the heat. Italo's first moves were very nice & seemlessly smooth but the left goes slow and then the final turns were flat airs & ordinary. I liked Filipe's 8.0 as the best wave of the heat, for the speed between the transitions; for me both of Griffin's waves were say 7.5 but Filipe's single air wave was a 6.5 to me; 7.0 at best. It was a flat air. Very close but I'd give Griffin the nudge. If Filipe landed the previous air, then it was Filipe easy. Its that Cole bloke that gets on my nerves. Horrible to watch.

Really agree re Erin Brooks. I watched her heats and couldn't quite put my finger on what was annoying me. It's an over coached, painting by number sort of surfing. Not something done for the passion. It reminds me of the child prodigy Olympic gymnasts who are coached within an inch of their lives since berth. Overall great comp enjoying what I've been able to watch.

Erin’s still so young so she’s not going to be “on” all the time.
That photo of her above illustrates perfectly what you’re saying freeride regarding the exaggerated arm swing.

But at the same time some of the back hand surfing she was doing at Burleigh was in my opinion some of the best surfing ever done by a female.
Those couple of waves where it just seemed to all sync up and flow were great to watch.

Remember JJF used to be criticised for his carves if I recall correctly and now they are almost unmatched.
She’s got time.

freeride76's picture
freeride76's picture
freeride76 Friday, 13 Jun 2025 at 9:09am

It's not whether she is "on" or "off"- it's just that really pre-determined over-coached style which rankles.

Look, it's effective and when it clicks and she gets a steep wave she can attack either forehand or backhand and can surf at a higher level than almost any woman on tour.

it's just not responsive enough to different conditions, different sections, etc etc.

That over coached style looks too rigid and inflexible and results are showing that. If she hasn't got a steep, cupped out section in front of her, her surfing looks terrible.

Can she change it up and enlarge the stylistic range?

It's possible, but once those movement patterns are ingrained they are very hard to shift.

We are seeing that with Caz Marks- who, according to Luke Egan, is trying to change up that rigid approach and is yet to log an excellent score this season. She can't seem to break out of that rigid movement pattern she had previously employed to win a world title and olympic gold and is now surfing (objectively by the numbers) worse.

The other element of her surfing - deep tube riding- we haven't seen enough of yet. But that could also be a factor for her.
She's amazing at that.

Moonah's picture
Moonah's picture
Moonah Friday, 13 Jun 2025 at 9:57am

juegasiempre Friday, 13 Jun 2025 at 11:18am

Marks is a good analogue (a worse surfer than Brooks though IMO) in that she qualified super young with really big deficiencies which she "made up for" with her quality backhand surfing. If this was fighting, the top fighters get punished for such glaring weaknesses and never make it to the top.

She should drop off tour for a year to work on her weaknesses as well if her craft is a priority. Competition is stifling for that, especially non stop competition. If it's just for the money, then fair enough. Get it while you can!

I think you can count on one hand the number of tubes ridden out there in competition, and almost all of them have been ridden by Kelly Slater.

I don't understand the hate for trestles, it's a hell of a lot better than any wavepool, Brazil or Portages beach break.

Judging was crook yesterday, but as per usual it'll get swept under the rug with fake smiles and robots commentating.

The commentators are so bad after the epic run we had with the Blakey brothers. Surely the WSL will be bringing them on the entire tour next year.

Maybe it's just Erin has been overhyped (since forever) , excuses excuses regarding her ugly style
Good in the tube for sure but the wsl doesn't seem to be a tube riding tour
Give me Caitys surfing anytime , got the moves, got the tube skill and most importantly (imo) she has got style
Erin is the classic "dancing bear" product of pushy surf parents with nothing but $ and exposure being the most important thing in their lives

About time more people admit Erin is over rated. She has natural aptitude for a few parts in surfing that tricked emotional people (Judges) for a while. Repetitive backhand turns at Burleigh for example. Don't people remember the same thing about Caronline? Everyone calling her the female Occ, next minute it's boring. Why does no one see it coming the next time?

Comparing her to Caity is perfect. It's that real surfing thing that's hard to describe or put your finger on. Caity has it, Erin does not. Steph has it, all of the others do not.

I'm blaming the whole direction of surfing on Social media and the death of old school videos. Apart from some recent mid length stuff by Bryce and Torren which speks volumes.

People surf to exist in clips on instagram. This goes for the pros themselves and the judging direction.
Short sharp clips of single airs for reels, bigger the better. Wild turns, the more out of control and hard the recovery looks the better.

Back in the full length video days surfers had a style of riding waves that could hold your attention for 30 waves each, full length rides that fit the wave and the music. Now all a pro surfer needs is an insta clip for the sponsors and couple of manic movements to get 8-9 point scores on the WSL. Why would they develop real surfing? We aren't rewarding it.

Nice sure about the comments about Erin Brooks. Erin is a radical fast paced hot rat surfer, possibly currently lacking that special skill in the slow slop that is Trestles. At 2:20 Erin goes very well.
