Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 6th February)

Best Days: Early Saturday northern corners, Tuesday morning northern corners for desperate surfers

Recap

A small clean S'ly swell pushed in yesterday before being replaced by a stronger pulse today under early offshores before sea breezes kicked in.

This weekend and next week (Feb 7 - 13)

Today's S'ly swell will drop back through tomorrow with small 2ft waves at south swell magnets under early N/NW winds that are expected to strengthen from the N'th through the day. Therefore northern corners will be the pick tomorrow morning.

Sunday will start out tiny with a mix of weak N/NE windswell and leftover S'ly swell but a new S/SE groundswell is due through the afternoon, generated by a strong and broad polar low to the south of New Zealand.

Unfortunately a strong and gusty S/SE change is due to move through early morning leaving no options for a decent surf during the day.

Sunday's onshore change will be linked to a strengthening polar frontal system pushing under us and with this we should see a small pulse of S'ly groundswell for Monday to 2ft+ across south facing breaks.

Winds will remain average for these locations though with a SW tending SE breeze Monday and then when the swell eases Tuesday from 1-2ft or so early N/NW winds will give into fresh NE breezes through the morning.

Besides a small pulse of NE windswell Wednesday there's nothing major due next week until the following weekend.

The longer term outlook is quite promising for the weekend starting the 14th as we see a broad, sustained and strengthening easterly trade-flow above New Zealand, start to extend down into the Northern Tasman Sea later next week.

With this we should see moderate amounts of E/NE trade-swell pushing down towards us and persisting possibly all of the following week. This is a long way out though and we'll have to review the synoptic setup surrounding these developments again on Monday. Have a great weekend!
