Watch: Dylan Graves at Surf Lakes

Yeah, yeah I know, "more damn wavepool content". Apologies...

That said, this clip goes alright. Dylan, you may recall, is the host and creator of the Weird Waves series, which lasted for three seasons, so he knows how to stitch together an enjoyable video.

Few things to keep in mind:

The Yeppoon lake will shortly be destroyed and replaced by another more robust design.

On one hand, of all the wavepools, the Surf Lakes design most closely mimics nature in swell line propagation.

On the other hand, that plunger.

I remember when he was the young prodigy at Quiksilver. He kinda vanished from the spotlight for a while but I'm happy he's doing what he's doing now. Seems like a pretty genuine dude creating some great content.

Yep. A likeable presenter with a positive and philosophical spin on things. Him and Harry Bryant do other good stuff for Vans also.

I can’t help hearing about the technology at Yeppoon and thinking about The Inbetweeners. Plunge!

Stuff waiting. Time to get proactive and take matters into your own hands.
Head up to Snapper and take off right behind the rock on a set wave, safe in the knowledge that Occy won’t be able to resist dropping in on you. That’s when you go all “ Slippin’ Stu Nettle” and let him run you down when he’s cutting back. A clean mowing over. . Throw in a Brazzo soccer dive, come up spluttering for oxygen and holding your neck in faux agony. Make sure it’s all on film.

Get your lawyer to give Occy the choice between handing over the keys to his house or a day at Occy’s peak with him handing you your towel and back rubs between sessions. Make him waddle to the shops for ya.

“Get me a Chiko roll, Occ….and dont take a bite!”

It has stacks more oomph than tulla, a more ocean like wave and an erudite chap well done.

That looks like so much fun - I'd prefer that to Kelly's Tub I reckon.

A bit sick of seeing clip when there is very little (I’d argue none) chance it will be open to public anytime soon. They have no infrastructure there other than the plunger and pond. The pool is to be drained and they have to build a nee plunger as that one was only a temporary proof of concept reaching its end of life. They still don’t having permits and don’t have the cash to build it all even if they get approval.

I do like Mr Graves though

Thanks Udo. Now they just need funding
- drain the lake, redo the surface, build a new plunger, develop all the facilities and surround….

Anyone got a spare $30’ plus another $10m contingency ?

Lots of partners signed up but until SurfLakes builds theirs or one of there partners does those 20+ projects ain’t going to happen.

Yeah Urbnsurf doesn't really break like a normal wave, there's something a bit off about it. Still great fun though. Hard to see them commercialising the plunger.

rubbish wave, it's dumb technology imo. Yes, it creates a wave, but that wave has zero chance of doing anything other than fading away...will always be a fast step drop in into a weakening wave, fresh water has less boyancy than salt water so that must diminish the abilty to ride the wave.

Kelly's wave is so far advanced compared to SL.....SL ain't even off the start line yet

@roadkill - there is nothing advanced about dragging a plough though a long pond to create a boat wake like wave. Kelly’s pool suffered way too few waves with too high costs. Even those lucky enough to go there for free get frustrated to when they get 2 or Maybe 3 waves in a day and are so shit scarred of dally off they safety surf them….and fall of anyway

Roadkill imagines himself swanning around Slater’s tub like Judge Smails from Caddyshack. Fact is he’d be relegated to the beginner Shorey at the Yeppoon Clunge tank.

lost, I am not talking about the frequency and costs just the actual wave...and a wave from Kelly is far better than anything SL can produce.
That said, if dragging a plough gives a good wave, that is good with me. Kelly's wave could be many km long...I can't see SL's wave being anything more than what they have now with their type of technology.
Good on both KS & SL for giving it a go.
Neither are currently commercially viable imo.

Urbnsurf seems the most commercially viable. Less perfect than the Slater one, but it continually pumps out fun ten wave sets every few minutes. Everyone out there is pretty amped, and you're exhausted after an hour.

No idea what their financials look like, but it seems possibly viable.

Agree on Urbrn. There challenge is the lot costs to build it completely blew out and shareholders had to stump up almost double what they originally thought. Sydney project is exactly the same - delayed and cost blow outs.

Delayed (rainfall) and cost blow outs (construction in general) they are saying opening early 2024 now, I’d guess more like Christmas 2024 or new year 2025

Yep but the other setting are all a load of fun. The trick with pools is to accept they are just different and just enjoy them.

My experience is best enjoyed a group where you are all hooting and carrying on in the water together follow by cold beers (sneak your own in)

I wonder if Occy has put money into SL...or is just a spokesman?

Not for Urbrn or Yeppoon. I would expect people like Occy are sweat labour eg not being paid but earning some interest via shares. Doubt he has put any of his own cash in.

I have read the Wiseman’s ferry perspective and anyone would be mad to invest in it. You are not buying a surf pool but a real estate investment trust - it’s laden with conflicts of interest and fees. Everyone else get paid before you ! I honestly don’t think it’s going to get of the ground.

100% Kelly's wave looks amazing !
But man the anxiety of not kooking one of the 2 or 3 waves during the session while all eyes are on you with a jet ski is cruising in front of the wave with some guy yelling at you seem fucking stressful.
Not to mention how much money each wave costs you, add to that they probably film each wave and you get to watch how shit you surf haha

I love the way Dylan Graves approaches every 'weird wave', always stoked, always positive, whatever the wave and its quality (or lack of). Long may he stoke...

Surf Lakes have announced a new wavepool for Austin, Texas. It's part of a "mixed-use retail and residential community", which has "$1.3 billion in capital expenditure".

I wouldn’t get too excited about announcements. They are usually a marketing push for a capital raise.

Get a little bit excited when construction actually starts and really excited when waves start pumping.

Plenty off cowboys out there - many are going to fall over before they start and just as many before they open. In that context Urbrn has done a really good job but even with all there experience their second pool is running 18 months late and budget likely to blow out x2 again.
