Watch: Barron Mamiya // One Week

Fresh out of his teenage years, Barron Mamiya spiralled into a rotten run of luck.

The first was missing the CT cut off by two places. Barron sat on the cusp for much of the year and was expected to make big leaps come Hawaii, and leap he did, though not quite enough to get him over the line.

Second was a shoulder injury that sideliened him for much of the following Hawaiian season.

While the third was his long time sponsor, Hurley, who'd supported him since he was thirteen, failing to renew their contract come December 31st 2019.

Fortunately for the twenty-year old, RVCA filled the sponsorship breech, his shoulder healed and a late season run of swell meant all wasn't lost from the Hawaiian season.

The following was filmed over one week in April.

He’s going to take JOB’s and JJF’s crown as the best out at Pipe soon.
Looks like he’s on a 6’0” out there. So nuts

Though two years younger, there's something about him that reminds me of Jack Robinson. Not just his surfing but his development too.

Both raised by surfing fathers - Trevor and Barry - who guided their early years.
Both prodigies scooped up by sponsors while still cherubs.
Both expected to jump straight from junior series to the CT, and both hit speedhumps.
Both dumped by longtime sponsors in their early twenties.
Both big wave/good wave specialists who need to work on small wave strategy if they're to fulfill their potential.

I can't say I feel sorry for the lad. Lives on the North Shore and the only thing he has to do each day is work out what he wants to eat and where he wants to surf (I get what you mean with his recent 'luck', but that is quite relative)

He is elite.

Each to their own and I know musical tastes are a holy personal right - but man those tunes just make my skin crawl......just bracing for some misogynistic crap or glorification of violence to come streaming from the speakers...

Loved the surfing though....

Yes. Rap/hip hop makes my skin crawl as well. Nothing to do with my age of course.

Fantastic surfing.

But if I see another clip of a young bloke putting boards in the car at the start I'm going to scream.
