Watch: Indonesian Motorcycle Diaries // Episode Six
For the latest episode in the Indonesian Motorcycle Diaries, Tom de Souza brings a wingman into the fold.
In an on-camera confession Keith Webster explains what he'd endure for a few days of perfect waves, so he's an ideal partner in an overland mission to a secluded beach. Surrounded by rugged country, the pair suffer equipment breakdown and are aided by the kindness of strangers - poor but good-hearted locals who offer assistance and affluent travelling surfers who make up a hamper of Beng Bengs and other treats.

Great footage of what reality is in this part of the World. If you have a weakness in your plan, that's where you'll come unstuck, obviously. This is what keeps this place uncrowded. If you're young and adventurous like these two, go to this place now, cause eventually it'll be developed beyond recognition.
To your point (spoiler alert) https://tracksmag.com.au/the-indo-motorcycle-diaries-chapter-viii
That's f#ckin epic.
Was down that way last year , the place is slowly changing , large parcels of beachfront land being brought and sold . Last 50 klms took us longer than the first 100 . Beautiful white powder sand and aqua water. March flies were farking annoying on the walk back to homestay after a surf . Once the road gets an overhaul the big resorts will no doubt move in . Would have looked very different before the dutch chopped down all the sandalwood trees . Very interesting culture where buffalo are paid as a dowry to the brides family , more than one and at roughly $2000 a buffalo , is pretty expensive . Many young guys from sumba simply can’t afford it and seek out women in other parts of indo . Lots on Lembongan working on the fast boat ferries.
crazy adventures , cast iron stomach required
That was awesome
unreal. love this project's evolvingness.
Awesome journey.
I would be packing some extra duct tape, fencing wire and zip ties for that one though.
I think Tom's written account surpasses his fantastic videos. Chapters I through VIII available at Tracks.
Epic ! Old fashioned Indo , not a euro in sight
Thanks Tom
There is a camp full of euros down there , heavily promoted on instagram, I met some Chinese surfers down there also that documented their trip to sumba and posted on YouTube with maps on how to get there and where to stay . Also met a young guy from Ukraine , parents sent him to indo to escape being drafted into the war .
No point letting the truth get in the way of a good story!
Hats off, some next level exploring and bush mechanics.
Thanks Sprout, his writing is equally, if not better than his Diary's.
Awesome suff. The locals are so kind & generous. I broke down on a motorbike on my own in the middle of Lombok in the 80s. Night fell. I wasn’t really sure where i was. Pushing along the road , kinda stressing, when a few guys appeared from the bush. They took me to their place. Fed me , fixed my bike, let me sleep there. I felt bessed. Truly beautiful people
