& on top of that 9.7% morgan unemployment figure, we have consumer confidence in the bin

https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2022/05/aussie-consumer-confidences-plu...

interesting set of figures going into an election, winner cops the hangover from a decadal+ property binge imo

Who should bring it in?

The LNP, who under Abbott didn't reveal costings until just hours before Saturday polling back in the 2013 election?

Good for the goose is good for the gander and all that...

Im sure he was criticised by Labor too.

You have to agree it makes sense though that these costing should be released much earlier, both parties should have to release them before any voting starts.

Looking at the stats from last election, it's interesting to see how the voting system influences things in the HOR.

There're 151 seats.

The Coalition won 41.4% of the vote but this translated to 51% of the seats.
Labor won 33.3% of the vote but this equalled 45% of the seats.

Meanwhile, The Greens won 10% of the vote but only 0.66% of the seats.

Notwithstanding the fairly similar ideologies of the two majors, it'd certainly be nice to break up that disproportionate power.

For sure Andy. I detect a really broad desire to be a bit more nationalist in Australia, too, but it's splintered between 6 or so parties so there's that much less chance of the desire actually getting elected/relevant. Similar story for the Greens who are biggest minor party I think.

I thought you'd be making a remark on the meme hinted above :) I can't unsee it aaargh

You would think so wouldn't you Indo. After all they know an election is coming up soon. It just makes them all look more untrustworthy. But then you also have to agree that most of us don't give a fuck about their costings because it's probably just the same as their verbal diarrhoea - just recorded in writing.

just plain fucking disgusting

and I really don't give a shit if libs did it first...

as garyg says, it just compounds the already plummeting, already bottomed out, level of trust in the electorate

and from what I can see, it really is not serving labor well, it's just feeding into scomo's narrative...

plus, pretty sure I heard albo and co. say yonks ago that all their policies and costings would be released well before election day

yet here we are... 2 days out...

this overly contrived cynical strategy, is now well and truly working against them, and has been for some weeks now

seriously, who advises contemporary labor?

in an age of yearning for authenticity and some semblance of honesty in modern politics, they appear to get just about everything wrong

everything!

yeh, I've spent some time in indo

rehab. too... maybe...

neither have contributed to staying off here though, I made a conscious decision to stay out of it until after the election. I wanted to see what others were thinking without junping in

I also held a little hope for some significant change for the better, politically, here, and elsewhere...

but our saviours have just gotten worser and more cynicaler as the big date approaches

so fuck it, I'm back before the big day, because all hope is lost...

hey sepp,

sure in an ideal world all political parties ought to have their costs audited weeks before the election but are you that naive, romantic or just plain stupid to think that process wouldn't be used by the media to flog Labor time and time again. Murdoch and 9infotainment would have a field day at Labor's expense like they are already in this election while ignoring and discussion on the $5 billion wasted on French subs or $18 billion on rortkeeper. $23 billion wasted and the focus is on Labor FFS.

So you can stick your ideal world naivety up ya clacker until we have fair and equal media staffed with journalists who aren't brain dead puppet apologists for the status quo. I don't blame Labor one iota for adopting this small target strategy after the flogging the media gave Labor last election ....

wait till you see subs that can fire hypersonic missiles...

Strategic environment changed, and a far more capable sub has become necessary. Deal is good in that capability will be present sooner, very good subs in US and UK fleets

your premise is flawed though, by the time they come to us, we're on our last line of defence. Deter further away is far better. Ask the Israelis if they would like more space between them and their neighbours...
