It's pretty simple China's growth has fulled Australia's growth, that has provided Australia with 29 years of economic growth the longest recorded by a developed country in the last 50 years or more.

Without China we wouldn't have had that record, so yeah off course government are going to suck up to China (not sure if suck up is the right word, but not sure what word to use?)

What about the “ free market “ ASX rally yesterday?

FFS.

Do you really have me believe that billions of dollars of investment are choosing to run long over a weekend of the highest volatility in world history ?

I can’t imagine any kind of dumb cunt willing to buy up big on stocks on a Friday afternoon when the market shuts for 60 hours of the most tumultuous period in modern financial history. Not a single person. Is there such a person , let alone hundreds of thousands , millions of them ?

Yet somehow we are supposed to believe that the market has developed unprecedented, outrageous and unwarranted courage in the face of global financial collapse......yeah right !

I was wondering that as well, christian lobby group?

Had a look at his website and no mention but it must have been a quick trip because on the 9th he was at the opening of a new uni in Petrie. Interesting thing is that to help get it going, the regional council put in $52 mil, $35mil from the grants program (of course we just had an election) and a $121 mil loan. So now you know why the unis need foreign, students they have to pay back what should be vital funding

So there are the gov ministers banging on about how vital a new uni is for the region and yet they aren't willing to fund it out right

Edit: he was in Washington for a new international crime cooperation agreement. Maybe it's only the PM and Kevin Andrews that do the christian lobbies when in the US

Are Australians ahead of the curve on where this virus is going (with the possible exception of Nick Carroll and the toilet paper stockpile brigade) or just smarter than Americans in general? This thread has much more going for it with informed or at least somewhat informed opinion than anything ive seen on any other surf related website comments pages (and some mainstream media websites and radio this week), almost to the point of idiocy it would seem. Mr Carroll proving that being the brother of TC is more important than being smart when it comes to journalist merit, Ive read some really ignorant shit today. We've had no issues with border control since Ex Policeman Dutton was put in charge. Everyone's good at something. As well as that, thousands of crims have been deported back all over the world, no one had the balls to do that before. Cracks me up laughing when I hear Jacinta saying.."Dunt sind em back ere"..I like our old guard dog. He froths on his job and does a good one at that.
We are going to have to look at disease control though, as this wont be the last, and the next one may be armed with something even worse and maybe deliberate as part of an invasion process.....Get well soon Pete.

Optimist....It’s one thing to be optimistic about a situation ( or government) and it’s another to be deluded about all truth and fact.

Whilst it may make you feel good to say that Dutton is doing a good job on border control and to just repeat this when someone shows otherwise, sooner or later even you will have to face the reality which is completely divorced from your opinion.

Or not. You seem to prefer blind optimism to positivity based upon fact.

I can’t remember their name .

The one who wouldn’t oversee hundreds of thousands of visa overstayers each year.

The one who hasn’t allowed the system to be so distorted that someone can fly in on a plane , immediately declare asylum, almost immediately be refused but then be given working rights and still be here filing spurious taxpayer funded appeals 3 years later.

The one who isn’t trying to privatise the visa system.

The one who wouldn’t allow and encourage a million temporary workers to exist in a virtual underclass of society.

The one who doesn’t hold private meetings in Chinese restaurants with known agents of foreign states and accept donations to further their rushed and inappropriate citizenship applications, despite unambiguous directives from our national intelligence organisations that this is a very unwise thing to do.

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/special-treatment-and-a-one-on-o...

The one who doesn’t allow casinos to bring in international criminals and completely sidestep the entire immigration process so that they may launder as much cash as they please .

The one who wasn’t in charge as Australia’s illegal immigrant numbers blew out ten fold in a few years.

The cash ban for transactions over $10,000 is wickedness and probably purely to prop the banks up during a depressive economy. I'm dead against Morro on this one and it is against a free democratic society. He should know better if he is a Christian as it would be against Gods principles of free choice. The cashless system is anti God as it creates a type of futuristic slavery to the banking system.

Just imagine if the Greens etc had got their way and we allowed untapped numbers of refugees to come here via boat and then free to live in the community.

How good would that system go down with this virus thing?

Imagine how much more problematic things could be.

Remember what happened under Rudd 18K refugees arriving by boat in one year, remember Rudd did a 360 degree back flip /change of policy because he had zero idea what numbers could snowball too. (imagine the possible number per year now if allowed to continue)

So what policy did he reenact?...the one that worked.

Yeah sure the onshore asylum seeker system is abused by non genuine seeking asylum onshore, but closing that loop hole is very hard, only way is to basically reject tourist visas etc from countries that are prone too abuse the system like Malaysia.,

Or completely scrap onshore asylum program, to do so i expect we would need to part from the refugee convention.

Yeah sure its easy to say to just fast track the review process, but I'm sure not that easy, and again there would always be opposition to a system that could reject those that shouldn't be rejected.

Personally I've been calling for this for years tell the UN to go get fucked and update the refugee convention for this day and age or part from it, and to show them we are not anti genuine refugee, still keep our offshore refugee resettlement program and even increase numbers.

Would Labor or the Greens support this?...no way in hell.

People can whinge about Dutton or Scomo, but you are completely ignoring the good work done by both on this issue, and completely ignoring the complete disaster an open border type policy the Greens etc always call for would now be with this virus.

* I use the word refugees/asylum seekers loosely obviously a percentage are not true refugees/asylum seekers.

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture
Blowin Sunday, 15 Mar 2020 at 9:02am

FFS Optimist....give that Good Christian rubbish a rest would you ?

If Scomo took his weaponised religion as anything more than a mental crutch for his weak mind , a vote winning demographic signaller and a fraudulent character reference to convince people that’s he’s not a snake in the long grass , then he would be pushing the nation in an entirely different direction.

Instead , we know our Hail Mary Prime Minister to be nothing more than chief propagandist and promoter of an unethical Ponzi scheme predicated on usury.

Scomo shows not a single inclination to adhere to the spirit of Christianity in anything he does. Just another charlatan using organised religion as a vehicle to persuade the masses that he’s not 90 kilos of shit in a 50kilo drum.

“In many historical societies including ancient Christian, Jewish, and many modern Islamic societies, usury meant the charging of interest of any kind and was considered wrong, or was made illegal.[3] During the Sutra period in India (7th to 2nd centuries BC) there were laws prohibiting the highest castes from practicing usury.[4] Similar condemnations are found in religious texts from Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (the term is riba in Arabic and ribbit in Hebrew).[5] At times, many nations from ancient Greece to ancient Rome have outlawed loans with any interest. Though the Roman Empire eventually allowed loans with carefully restricted interest rates, the Catholic Church in medieval Europe regarded the charging of interest at any rate as sinful (as well as charging a fee for the use of money, such as at a bureau de change). Religious prohibitions on usury are predicated upon the belief that charging interest on a loan is a sin.“

Cheers IFocus, note the particularly high skew to older people in the fatality %
Please consider for older loved ones. I've been telling mum to lessen exposure & I reckon the West is about a week behind Vic and 2 weeks behind NSW. How long till schools close? Geelong Grammar has done so peremptorily, but they are smart cookies almost always.
Further: Italy 24/2 - 200 cases or so. Now, 3 weeks later, 21,000 official.
Australia has just gone past 200 cases now 15/3. Italy does have 2 1/2 times the population, but it gives you an idea. The medical email blowin posted a some pages back from the Italian doc, I've showed that to family and it worked, rocket put under them to be ready. Frustrating thing for me is despite seeing the potential of this so early, and being ready so early, I still gotta go in for treatment... What do you do? Give it up and take your chances? Go in and be at risk of infection? I feel for medical staff, they are angels. The oaths you swear must be pretty serious in medicine. In the meantime I'm surfing, smelling the roses, getting stuff done around the house that you always put off, buying equipment for businesses afterward, meditation, yoga, boosting diet - keep positive focus, calm and relaxed. I've been stunned to find out that acquaintances who own businesses would be bankrupt incl house gone in maybe 3 weeks of no cashflow but still having to pay wages (everyone has way flasher cars than me, dresses better, holidays better) but I'm able to plan and be ready for this for an extended period. So good luck to you all, health or economy wise. I don't reckon the economy is coming back in a hurry, but a Swellnet subscription will still be valuable. When economy comes back though, the demand and growth will be really good - and hopefully house prices adjust for the young crew. In many ways the world of the last 20 years has been an abberation.
