Are the swellnet forums turning to crap????

Fitzroy-21 made a good point in the other thread. (cut & pasted below)

"Years ago, we used to all post quite freely on here with opinions and thoughts on some great discussions. There would be some great piss takes, laughter and occasionally things would need to be reigned in if it got a little heated. It was just that, opinions and thoughts. Didn’t hurt anyone, gave an insight into differences and views you may not have previously considered.

Lately it has just become a toxic shit show. The amount of times I have written out a post to then just delete it, shut the lap top and walk away because I just couldn’t be fucked with the stupidity. There a now a couple of posters that have just ruined the whole culture of the place. The fact is, these posters are not just ordinary, run of the mill vanilla fuckwits, they are A-grade top shelf fuckwits. Swellnets self-appointed sheriffs.

I can only imagine what would have happened if old mate Wellymon had bought up the subject of bigfoot/sasquatch these days."

Yeah, we receive a few emails from people asking for person x or person y to be received. Funnily, it's not always the people you think it is.

Anyway, we're developing an interesting moderation tool that will assist the process I think. Looking forward to launching it, and seeing the reaction.

Ever thought about putting in a thumbs up / down for posts? Might avoid some of the abuse that gets posted. Instead of posting a reply to agree or disagree which can then lead to arguments, just a thumbs up or down

We're developing a variation on that which will be really effective. Don't want to say much more until we're ready to launch, but I think it'll certainly improve the tone of the forums in a way reflects the wishes of the community.

Great ….a sin bin voting system where the handful of resident whining ninnies can do their pile on cyber bully thing to gang vote any unpleasant opinions out of the picture. It’s not enough for them to parade their soiled nappies across the forums and emailing the editors and owners to ban those they disliked. It’s vomitous enough when they present their personal sensitivities as for the good of the community. Now they’ll get to take their hall monitor act full time.

@Guy

Bit rich, you might not agree with my views but over 90% of the time i stick to the topic at hand and only get hot headed at others if provoked or in the very rare case when become frustrated with others views, something we all do as only human.

The amount of times ive had to ignore your personal attacks and cheap trolls when im not even having any kind of discussion with you is crazy.

There is two rules you are breaking when you do this, the one on personal attacks and one about causing chaos.

Your intentions are clearly just to try to stir me up to try to push me over the edge.

So don't you dare try to claim any moral high ground.

You might be offended by my views, but im also offended by your views it goes both ways.

Thats not what we are talking about, i don't care what your views are, you or anyone else should have the right to share those views as long as you don't break Swellnet rules.

But you shouldn't have the right to just come into a conversation not add anything except just blatantly attack or put down people or try to stir them up, for the only reason being you don't agree with the persons views or don't like them for some reason.

The problem is you are clearly intolerant of views that don't align with your own and don't like having your own views challenged,

I just hope it's a fair system that doesn't penalise people based on opinion, but penalises people based on how they treat others.

For instance a thumbs down or up system that may then see the thumbs down post hidden is problematic and could create an echo chamber.

For instance if Hutchy said "Im going to vote LNP because i think they have done a good job" his post would im sure get a high number of thumbs downs and be hidden as there is not many LNP voters here and many Labor voters.

Yet someone else might say "Hutchy, your a (insert an uncalled for personal attack) because your voting LNP" and that post might get a whole heap of thumbs up.

The effect then being Hutchy is penalised just for sharing a view others dont agree with, while the other person is rewarded for a personal attack.

Personally i don't want anyone banned or anyones views censored, i just want to be able to post without people attacking me personally instead of attacking what im saying.

If you see a post that you think needs to be reported, then screenshot it and send it through, and we'll look into it. We'll also look at building some functionality along the lines of 'report this post' into the site, which will assist.

Otherwise, if it's OK with everyone else, it'd be great if I could get back to work. Got a bit on at the mo'.

I wouldn't waste your time with this, by the sounds of it, you guys already do enough moderating. There are some deep seated grievances and petty beefs between crew on here which will render that functionality obsolete in no time flat.

Honestly, these forums are fine, for the most part it's the same crew having a crack, and they give as good as they get. If it is affecting people's mental health then I would suggest taking a break from all social media, reset and come back with a fresher perspective or don't come back at all. Broader issues at play here I reckon.

I watched almost in shock at how divided the US became when Trump ran. Just as quick and largely due to covid, Australia or at least what we are shown outside of our own everyday realities via our online presence or thru news media is easily just as split (Regardless of vacinnations rates, if that makes sense?). Forums reflect this, but the more I think of this, so do conversations at the pub, at work or with your family too. I vote keep as is.

Does this go some way in explaining the flagrant banning anomalies?

No. We have banned subscribers before - including some participating in this thread - and refunded their sub (pro rata). It's just a pain the arse, that's all.

@ Facto

Thats your ill informed opinion, and you have the right to it.

But im sorry my views are based on a combination of common sense and listening and reading what others have to say including Indigenous people like Jacinta Price, Anthony Dillion, Warren Mundine and more like hours upon hours.

And the idea that employment and purpose, education, health and positive cultural change and treating people equally and not on skin colour is white noise well whatever.

Anyway this is not the thread for this discussion.

Reason we need this is that Stu, Craig, Jono and I (only people who have admin access) don't read every post, or even every thread.

So as an example, when last night's catfight started to take off, we had no idea it was occuring until someone emailed us. A simple alert feature will make this an easier process for users to let us know of problems.

Of course it's open to abuse but I think it'll be a step in the right direction. And it'll show we are being proactive about improving the forums and thus the quality of the community discussion.

Who benefited?

Nobody at all benefitted, even though it was all just going in circles I sure didn't want it shut down, there is zero benefit for me in it being shut down, just because i don't agree with people doesn't mean i don't want them to be able to voice their views.

Blowin was the other one involved and i cant see how it benefits him in it being shut down either.

Same deal for Hutchy, who wasn't really involved.

And It sure doesn't benefit Brutus or Blue Diamond, i actually hope the thread is cleaned up from the abuse and re opened as said may happen, i actually feel for Brutus as he wasn't involved.

I don't agree with Brutus, i actually strongly disagree with him and his views frustrate me, but i have zero issues with Brutus as a person, he conducts himself better than 90% of people here, rarely loses his cool and he can actually have a civil discussion.

This might even surprise him if he reads this, but i even don't have any issues with Blue Diamond as a person, even if he wants me banned or my views censored, he seems to lose his cool at times as many of us do, but it's rare and im not holding that against him no matter how he feels about me, again we disagree 90% of the time but he generally pretty civil, to be honest before the thread started id totally written him off, but i now know he is capable of having a discussion or debate, at one point things even went bad the other month and we worked it out and moved on.

I can seperate people views and opinions to who they are, i don't have to hate or even dislike people because they have views i don't agree with, the majority of my friends and some of my favourite family members hold views i disagree with, but in real life i just don't engage with them on those things, we know we have our differences and just agree to disagree and focus on other things.

BTW. I know how it feels to have a thread shut down that you start, dont forget my Lab leak theory thread got shut down because of trolls who had no interest in discussing the topic.

At the time i started that thread the idea was not mainstream it was just starting to being re questioned, but since then we now know its become mainstream even Biden supporting the idea and pretty much accepted as the most likely scenario, that thread could have been an interesting discussion.

The one where he said Martin Luther King didn’t know what he was talking about or the one which said White people are the only racists in history?

Perhaps the best part was that the first link completely contradicted the second link. The first link ( co written by a white bloke from Canada ) said that white people should just shut up and be silent and never lecture black people about racism , whilst the second link then said that the most famous black activist in US history was wrong and that his speech should be ignored.

Brutus gets it…..but it’s White as rice Facto who can’t handle having someone he doesn’t like being seen by others as non-racist so he just keeps lying and lying. Facto thinks that people wanting to live without care for skin colour are racist. He wants segregation into race …..just like the KKK!

“blowin , it feels like to me that you seem to have made progress in dealing with racism and understanding it....as I have called you racist before because of I think what were "joke comments ".....
It's actually nice to see you standing up for all colors as equal....and we shouldn't judge people based on the color of skin.....this is the holy grail for a Country like Australia to be fulfilled“

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture

And here’s a post that Facto ( Connie) decided to follow up by saying I was racist. But he will swear he’s just a poor victim of a conspiracy and not a snide clown with a grudge.

“Here’s one of my favourite all time bits of artwork which I’ve been meaning to share for a while but always forgot until i saw it today and decided to snap a photo. It’s a mural on a building from a place that’s pretty important to me.

What I love about it is the fact that it’s about unity. Obviously the two girls flying over the valley are metaphors for the shared cultures which have dominated Australia for the past couple of hundred years . Though I also like to think that the dual races represents the post racial world which is perhaps our shining achievement as modern humans. The idea that this is just two friends and their race is irrelevant is a beautiful sentiment and the best outcome for the globalised world we are living in. A world where intermarriage and racially -blind love will see humanity become a true melting pot.

I love the way the indigenous girl is casually guiding the Caucasian girl through the valley as though saying “Look at where we live. This was the home of my people but now it’s the home of OUR shared people.”

The ancient presence of the indigenous is represented by the face of the Dreamtime elder to the left, whilst the land itself-which has been here for an endless time before anyone got here and will be here long after we are all gone -is the majority of the picture. The wedge tail eagle accompanying the two girls speaks of the interrelationship between humans and the other living inhabitants. We are all journeying here together and we are all part of the same community.

I love the way the natural valley is the predominant feature by proportion, yet the town is shown as the inviting little built environment.

Anyway….not sure if you can zoom in on your device to check it out but I really love this work. Unity not division with our natural home as companion not mere canvass to smear with our superfluous human bullshit. It says that human frailty can let us down but hope and love for each other and the planet will always see us through.
