Thanks to everyone still travelling, don't come down to yorkes or any other small coastal communities (eg west coast) in case you can't work it out
you're coming from somewhere with cases of covid19 to a town that doesn't . We have quite a few elderly residents down here and the nearest large hospital in in adelaide . Also a big thanks to all you people from interstate who raced across the border ( mostly viccos) and went to cactus go home to your own state and place of residence, are you people just stupid or just plain selfish

UNLESS YOU LIVE AT THE BEACH, PLEASE DON'T TRAVEL TO SURF

COVID-19 is changing the way we think about surfing. Travelling to the surf now means you're putting an unnecessary strain on the resources of small regional communities. So, please stay home. If you live near the beach and want to surf, please maintain a healthy spacing in the lineup, don't hang in the carpark, and keep your surf sessions shorter to allow others the opportunity to get wet. Above all, stay happy, healthy and look out for one another.

Why would swellnet provide a surf report after showing the above?

To Swellnet,

Snakeman makes a very good point about surf reports.

I have been hearing reports all day about packed surf and carparks down here in Vicco. Many beaches around Port Phillip Bay have been closed today and police are moving people on. Locals are mighty jacked off for fear their beaches might also be closed or the Dan Andrews, the Premier might universally announce all Victorian beaches are closed.

So, Ben and Stu is it time to shut down the reporting / forecasting side of the business until Scotty von Marketing declares us good. I ask this question respectfully in the knowledge that such a decision wouldn't be taken lightly.

You may not be aware that the tourism operators on the Great Ocean Road are not wanting tourists down there over Easter and asking people to stay away.

https://www.smh.com.au/business/small-business/people-shouldn-t-come-gre...

There seems to be a certain age group who think none of these CV problems apply to them, in the last week to ten days I've personally seen packed cafes, golf courses, beaches and today the surf. What will it take for these knuckleheads to wake up? ............. anyway, I digressed from my question to SN.

That a good point shoredump.
Ben as I stated in an earlier post to Vic Local, the communications from the government are confusing.
But my read on it is that anyone who is surfing regardless of their origin is not strictly following the fed govt guidelines.
It’s obvious some are doing it in a way (Surfing) that no one wants to see - travelling in groups to crowded areas.
Your advice encites localism where it could be more appropriate to say, if you can’t surf without coming into contact with more than very small groups of other people for more than very short amounts of time you shouldn’t be doing it.

Well, I just got freaked out.

Reading all these shut down stories and hardly seeing anyone myself , I thought the town had cleared out.

Just now I drove to a nearby beach to find a gutter and catch a couple of tailor. Fuck me drunk if it wasn’t the most crowded I’ve ever seen it. Sure , it’s a Saturday, but this beach you’ve pretty much got to yourself most afternoons. I drove about 3 kms on the low tide sand and must’ve passed 30 cars . Every gutter had 7-8 cars all parked like they were at Coles car park. Everyone shoulder to shoulder fishing.

The coup de grace was coming across a dozen cars all parked up together with everyone sitting around on beach chairs , sucking piss with music blaring. Must have been two dozen people.

Weird.

Swellnet, Keep the surf reports its inane to think that people are deciding whether to exit the house based on this site, all I use it for is an easy way to decide what board to take. If you shut the reports down just means i have to take more boards will be still going to the beach. But admittedly not near the sheeple.

I've seen a few examples of local regulation over the few days on a remote piece coast. Seen a few groups of 20 something tourist sent in very assertively. Not quite like the stories of 80's and 90's but unlike anything I've seen in my time. Some petty stresses local crew worried about their health, community and very limmitted health services. Really important to listen to advice about 'essential travel ' when entering really remote areas with very limmitted health services for many vulnerable locals.

TV Surf Reporters have far greater reach & vid production for Weekend Wraps.

No shortage of News fans seeking important links to all current topics.

Surfcams can equally link a premium network of beach crowd counters.
If we're locked up, the cams become Whale Counters + ECL warnings...etc.

Q: Ask why Govt's refuse to remove Shark Nets?
Q: Why do GCCC still run a Life Guard service.
Qld Govt pull up Nets + Close Beaches 2 mths/yr (Q: Why not now...?)

tbb can vouch for Frontline Lifeguards resourcing # 1 swellnet forecasts.

Can anyone explain why with currently 143 people infected in every 1 million, there is so much mania in Australia?
People have to eat so they go to a supermarket to buy food. Thats pretty close proximity to each other and to contact surfaces.
Best chance for contamination right there although as the numbers suggest unless you're in the high risk cluster you'll be unlucky.
Yet to find a fairly secluded spot on the beach is considered reckless?
Are you really posing a threat to others there?
See someone else: keep a distance away.

I couldn't agree more views man. I went for a surf at my local yesterday with only 3 others and got spotted by some of our boardriders club vigilantes and absolutely slammed on socials. Stayed miles clear of anyone too. Meanwhile nearly every case here is still coming in on planes every day. It's like it's completely divided the local community and lots of relationships in all sorts of ways are getting damaged permanently too. There are those that think going for a surf will Kill their grandma and those who can see that it's perfectly ok as long as they don't cause any need for rescue services. Which at the mo are all busy picking up all the people having bike accidents and DIY disasters at home

You make some good points Poo-Man. I agree with most of them. Are you from NZ? I think there is another side to the coin though which is why I haven't made my mind up yet on this. For the time being I have decided not to go surfing even though I'm only 5 mins walk to my local. Some things to think about:

1/ I think it's important to bear in mind that this is an absolutely unprecedented emergency that got sprung on us very quickly. The government had very little time to react and thus the rules they have come up with are not perfect. It's hard to blame them for this.
2/ The only thing that's really gonna smooth out the edges a bit is people acting with the interests of the entire country in mind rather than their feelings of entitlement to personal liberty. We're basically at war here. If you can't go surfing for four weeks then that's a small price to pay in my book
3/ You are spot on with the inconsistencies in the rules. If they're gonna ban surfing then they should ban mountain biking. However, if it is consistency we're talking about then nobody should be driving to the surf. The rule is you're only in your car to get food or medicine .
4/ It does make my blood boil a bit when I see guys surfing on the Raglan Cam, when it is quite clear that 99.9% of surfers that usually surf there are making a sacrifice and staying at home. I wouldn't go as far as to dob them in, but I would be alerting them to my displeasure if I knew them.
5/ If enough people act selfishly and we end up having to spend more than four weeks in lock-down I will be farken' spewing. Those people that openly broke the rules will not be very popular with the rest of us. For many people not being able to go surfing is the least of their problems. Their livelyhoods are at stake here. Many businesses are getting absolutely slaughtered by this. Let alone the fact that people could die. Don't forget about that. it's actually a life or death situation for a lot of people.

As I mentioned there are some good arguments for being able to go surfing in some circumstances, which I'm sure someone will be itching to point out to me. I am aware of these and have given them a lot of thought. It's a difficult situation and cool heads must prevail. Like I said I'm still sitting on the fence while I process all the pros and cons. One thing's for sure, we all have a lot of time at the moment for thinking about things.

poo-man's picture
poo-man's picture
poo-man Sunday, 29 Mar 2020 at 8:17am

Yep and yep to the place you said. And yep I totally understand your points too. I'm personally facing financial oblivion and can't see a way out of it either.
And it's also fair to say that most of the community that surf are in favour of surfing still although biking or walking out. And no risk either, nothing big or shallow.
But each to their own, at the mo it's dividing people

GreenCT's picture

What confuses me is if you walk or drive or bike to the beach, dont socialise, dont use public showers etc then surf or walk or swim and then get back home your not spreading anything.
But then go to a supermarket and there open piles of fruit, people passing each other to close, trolleys that are half heartedly cleaned
Cash exchanged or even using your card touching a machine that has countless other cards touching it
It seems we are focusing on the wrong thing

Don’t go to the supermarket. Lockdown means lockdown. No contact with other humans.
Get food delivered. Have it left outside your house. Wait till deliverer departs. Wear latex clothes when handling delivery. Do not take the cardboard box into your house. Remove as much packaging as possible. Wash packaging that you take in with isopropyl alcohol. Then wash your hands.
And in general keep things as dry as possible. Towels, hands countertops. Things you touch regularly— phone, door handles, tv remote, keys wipe with isopropyl alcohol daily.

Good points, Spuddups and poo-man.

An important point here in NZ is that perception is more important than actual danger of infection or serious injury. If you're somehow seen as not doing your bit, it's as bad as committing benefit fraud (which for some reason is the worst sin here).

Online liquor stores were quickly made 'Essential Services', and giving our peace time track record, and the fact that 4 weeks inside will strain even cool heads, that's not going to bode well.

I reckon that part of a successful lockdown is keeping people reasonably happy and sane, not going full Big Brother. Feed us some liberties that won't influence the outcome negatively.

They currently have a bunch of people with symptoms in the section set aside for corona cases in the Hobart hospital but they haven't tested them because they don't fit that criteria. The only reason I could imagine why they aren't is because they have bugger all testing kits and don't want to waste them?

We won't know until things play out, but stat wise the last few days are looking better, if you look at all the other countries like i said you don't see similar trends in the lower numbers, so still positive signs that current measures are having a positive effect.

After i posted i googled the topic and few media outlets had noticed the same as had the health minister.

BTW. Australia does have some of the highest testing per population, so our numbers should be more accurate than many other countries our current low death rate compared to numbers of cases also points to this, it's close to what it should be, while many countries ratio of deaths to infected cases are way out on what you would expect (Indonesia being an extreme example)

the drop in the graph (indo above) has to be a little bit of good news. but it looks back in time to about 1-2 weeks ago. now we have almost stopped importing cases, you would expect a dip in the curve. but within-community infection will have been ramping up over the last 2 weeks (the ‘bondi phenomenon’, haircuts, schools, etc) so i’m expecting it to be a temporary dip before the real curve. hope i’m wrong

I think Swellnet should be postponing the reports for areas like the Mornington Peninsula where you are no longer allowed to use the beach. The state government and the local council have made it very clear that no one is allowed to use the beaches which includes, surfers, fishos etc...

The weather is indicating we're going to have some good days coming up and if this is accompanied by a report saying it's pumping, including some nice photos, then it is only going to encourage the dickhead element in our society to drive down Peninsula Link and put communities down there at risk. A lot of these communities have a high proportion of older people too. Thanks to all the idiots coming down from Melbourne packing out their holiday homes this area is now the second worse for cases in the state of Victoria so anxiety is high.

To be blunt, I think it is irresponsible of Swellnet to keep putting out surf reports in areas that are now closed down.

My worry is we get a surf report telling everyone "Hey it's pumping, but stay the fcuk home!" It's like dangling a bag of lollies in front a bunch of kids and leaving the house and not expecting any of them to take one.

Stunet is right in regard to Victoria & near everywhere.
29th March
Victorian Premier: Daniel Andrews:
The Premier stressed that people must not gather on Victoria's Beaches, yet people chose to do otherwise. It is essential that we follow the advice of the Victorian Govt & Chief Health Officer, by discouraging people from gathering and urging them to stay at home.
"Staying home will save Lives."
The closures prevent people from gathering and sitting on beaches.
People will still be able to surf, swim, run, walk or exercise dogs, provided they strictly observe physical distancing rules and do not gather.

SIGNS

The Beach Closures follow other infection minimisation taken by Council including preventing user groups from holding gatherings of people in or on Council - owned or managed facilities and land.
Council became aware on Sunday morning of COVID-19 related signs on local beaches, bearing Council & State Govt logos.
Council did not create or install the signs.
Officers have since removed seven of the signs from between Jan Juc and Point Addis and are continuing to monitor against others being posted.

https://www.miragenews.com/beach-road-car-park-closures-seek-people-to-s...

If its not safe to surf its not safe to surf, doesn't matter if you're local and drive 5 minutes to the beach or drive 50 minutes. It a question how people behave in and out of the water.
Either shut all the beaches, or have clear guidelines on safety, for everyone.
