What a hiding for the LNP.
However the ALP having won by so much is mot really a good thing for the country. Will be a weak opposition.

Yeah to a degree I concur - a strong opposition is good as it forces the govt to craft good policy and explain it well.
It's worth the occasional read of OS newspapers to see how much of an outlier Australia (and the US) are in the Western hemisphere. We're used to the two major parties being in absolute opposition, but that's not the norm.
Here in Australia, I think the notion of a strong opposition has been taken to an unworkable extreme over the last two decades. I recall John Howard being flummoxed when then-opposition leader Rudd nodded and agreed with him on things like tax reform. Yet once Tony Abbott was opposition leader the system of pitting 'our' ideas against 'their' ideas - what's called adversarial argument - went out the window in favour of opposing every single thing the ruling party suggested, even if it was good policy, even if it fell into your ideological camp.
It was an aggressive, power-at-any-cost method, yet the cost was born by Australian citizens locked into a black or white battle where even good ideas get opposed on tribal grounds so very little reform or progress gets made. Wasn't great for social cohesion either.
I'm hoping Labor has the discipline to give marginal attention to marginal issues, progress the ones that matter most (affordable housing, education, tax reform - notably indexation - plus defence and foreign policy), while the LNP can get its shit together and work in lockstep with Labor on things they agree on, and push clever alternatives on things they don't.
Naive..?
Well if you can't be naive now, in the wake of a one-sided trouncing, when can you be?

tbb, was listening to this while reading your post above... Very powerful.. enjoyed it thoroughly!

Look what we might have missed out on! The dangerous warmongering antics of a Dutton ideal!
The reemergence of Nuclear energy in all its might!!
His flouting for the production of weapons to the industry's maximum efficiency WTF!!!!
To destroy, injure, annihilate, displace populations to a level of despair on innocents as the weapons are shipped around the globe.
We, as Australian citizens, slanted as being party to its inception and distribution.
I'm sure it wouldn't have ended well! To a level of ruin with no return?
But he's the man!!!

Well there you go.
No doubt they’ll make an horrendous decision that will keep them in opposition longer.

Lots and lots of spending and/or promises of spending on that t shirt.
The LNP do have a problem as a valid opposition.
The ALP has a problem with spending taxpayers money to get votes.
Electricity rebates are the dumbest thing ever as is forgiving hecs debts.
And anti union protections? Hows that union racket going for the ALP now…riding cover for the corruption. Lets not start looking at the superannuation bs that is ripping off the members. “ in the members best interest “ ha ha give me a farking break.

All this talk of the future of the Liberal Party and who will lead it is all well and good but to a large extent misses the point.
The first question that the remaining Liberals need to ask themselves is are they willing to allow the Nationals (who had an excellent election yet again) to dictate their dated values and policy agenda to the liberals ….at the expense of their traditional city base
Until they get serious about being constantly reamed by the Nationals nothing else matters

@Guy Good point. Even more so now the Nationals are a bigger tail wagging the Liberal dog.

The second question they need to ask themselves is whether they should continue to allow Gina Rinehart to dictate her values and policy agenda to them, the Nats, or the electorate.
Didn't go too well this election.
Why the MSM thought it necessary to single her out and publish her opinions yesterday, as if they count more than any other Australian, is a question we all need an answer to.

Wow...that's some otherworldly treasure digging Reform...
At first tbb was backtracking thru 70's catalogue...how has this dynamic track been buried so long...
Fact it was recorded 40 years later in 2014 spins tbb out...
Even more impossible is that singer is only just now releasing his debut LP...Wow!
Here's where tbb was coming from...impossibly perfect 1975 Companion Track.
Another quality washed up on the rocks > Rescue / Recovery theme by Steve Harley

As opposed to others on the far left dictating values and policy agenda?
It’s all just same same but different.

Maybe this time with a weak opposition and a non existent Greens presence in the lower house it will be a good thing.
Libs and Greens constantly blocked any housing reform Labor had proposed.
Maybe Labor can claim a mandate and get something passed.

Albo was asked what his first order of business is? He answered with assurance: 'Cutting HECS by 20%, as promised'.
That's what we voted for. No fluffing, no bullshitting, straight to the point.

I’m all for cutting hecs. That’s a good thing. However cutting hecs just means more taxpayer funding to institutions as far as I can tell.
I am however 100% against forgiveness of what is owed by those who currently have hecs debt.

Why?
And it’s only 20%

I always thought Labor haven't been aggressive enough particularly with the energy transition they need to beat up the greens and LNP severely and get on with it cheaper energy helps everyone that wont happen if longer term everyone keeps propping up old coal fired power stations.
And while they are at it secure proper gas supplies (lots of it) its no only used in energy but is critical in many processes.

It’s all going to happen in the Senate I’d assume from my layman’s perspective.
Liberal Labor equal numbers. Negotiating with more Teals and Greens than far right wing Senators.
Is the Ranga the only One Nation Senator now?

Just reading now the Labor Greens might be the majority voting block in the senate.
Hopefully the Greens won’t be too demanding and stop to many transitional policies.
Hopefully they’ll realise they need to come to the centre like the majority of Australians just voted for.

If there's going to be HECS forgiveness then I want back some of my approx $50k that I paid off all by myself via hard work, determination and sacrifice.

You would you RWNJ.
Would you take it now if you still had a debt? Yes you fucking would!
God forbid giving occasionally. You encapsulate why the glans with glasses and his archaic party had a huge loss.
Australia just showed you they dont give one shit about all your self righteous hand wringing.

Well…
It also certainly must be hard work blowing your own trumpet and being so handsome.
& the determination required to maintain such magnificent masculinity and unbridled narcissism gotta be pretty much all consuming ;)
… at least you are willing to admit that you sacrificed things
- like humility, compassion and mutual respect so you can just be a pretend intellectual and a cunt instead hahaha

Agreed @adam12, but I don’t really distinguish between the Nationals and the Rinehart’s of the world - I’m happy to debate but I see the Nationals just as the political front for mining and minerals

$50K?
Isn't that like five modelling jobs for you? Just get out of bed you lazy prick.
Anyway, good luck to you. For years I've been trying to pay the 10% GST I should've been paying prior to the year 2000 but the govt won't take it.

wow so harsh, not the response I was expecting. Thought it was a valid point about fairness. Anyway, I would however support the forgiveness of the additional HECS debt incurred due to inflation over say 2% since 2021. That would have really damaged some young people just starting off in life post uni with full debt.

I paid off more than $80k prior to these announcement. It absolutely doesn't stop me supporting the debt cuts for future generations.
Might as well put this up in the politics subforum, to spare the front page. It's 18 months away or so, but here we go.
This is how Dutton wins:
