Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 10th May)

Best Days: Saturday morning, Sunday morning

Recap

Good fun waves yesterday with 3-5ft of S'ly tending S/SE swell and workable SW winds, best in protected spots.

Today better offshore winds and more SE in the swell saw good 2-3ft surf at most open spots.

This week and weekend (May 11 - 14)

Come tomorrow there isn't due to be much swell left out of the SE as the low responsible for the last couple of days waves weakens to our east today.

We may see 1-1.5ft sets, but that's about it, and a NE groundswell showing on the charts from Tropical Cyclone Donna isn't due to make any impact at all.

A S'ly change Friday won't bring any major surf with it at all, while our inconsistent NE trade-swell for later in the day and Saturday is still on track. The groundswell component has been downgraded, with Tropical Cyclone Donna losing most of its strength once it moves into the trade-flow in our swell window.

Still a persistent fetch of strong E/NE winds have been aimed through our north-east swell window and we should see some fun inconsistent NE swell filtering down into us from late Friday, peaking Saturday.

Saturday should see 2ft to occasionally 3ft sets across open beaches and southern corners but a little low forming off our coast may create average conditions with an E/SE breeze. The models are still moving around regarding the positioning of this system so check back Friday for the latest on this.

The trade-swell should ease back from 2ft Sunday with S/SW winds. Some small weak windswell may be generated by the low, but we'll have to review this Friday.

Longer term the small low forming off our coast may become part of a broader and deeper surface trough/low developing off the East Coast, with an infeed of strong E/NE winds through next week resulting in some decent E/NE swell across our region.

Check back on how this system is possibly shaping up.
