Roxy Pro France: Finals Day

Overnight Sally Fitzgibbon won the Roxy Pro France beating Tyler Wright in a close-fought final. Wright nabbed a Perfect 10 midway through the final and looked to have it sewn up needing only an average back up score. However, she didn't find it and Fitzgibbon prevailed taking the title and jumping to third in the rankings.

After the Roxy Pro France Wright is just a few hundred points behind ratings leader, Carissa Moore. The Women's WCT title will come down to the last contest, next month's EDP Cascais Girls Pro at Portugal.

Cloud Nine, Day One

Living up to its reputation as one of the world's best righthand barreling waves, Cloud 9 delivered solid 5-6 foot perfection today to start the ASC 6 star 19th Annual Siargao International Surfing Cup. To read a full report from the day click here.

Hurley Pro Trestles: Finals Day

Well that's that. Trestles is done and Taj is the winner, Julian placing second. Last time Taj stood on the dais here it was following a dramatic last-minute loss to Old Baldy (made more dramatic by the fact the organisers made it a 40-minute final, if it were the regular 35 minute this'd be Taj's second win).

Hurley Pro Trestles: Day Three

While the surf was much the same as yesterday - 2-3 foot of weak tripe - the level of surfing stepped up for Day 3 of the Hurley Pro. Filipe Toledo went down gallantly in a hi-fi battle with Jules Wilson. And then Jules Wilson vindicated that win with a jaw-dropping Round 5 display that had him swinging each way but upright. And with that the cute li'l Sunny Coaster takes the momentum into the (likely) last day of the event.

Powered Up

Ronny 'Skull' Hill drops the throttle during a motorised surf session at North Cronulla yesterday. With the advent of motorised surfboards and their movement into the marketplace, will this become a more regular sight on our beaches?

Progress, eh?

One Degree Of Russell Molony

So there he was, young Grant Molony drifting about in unfamiliar waters, waterhousing in hand, trying to make sense of the ever-shifting Puerto Escondido lineup. Waves would stand up and reel off, either too far away to shoot or too close and self preservation would kick in and he'd dive deep to avoid the explosion.

But then a left stood up outside and not 100 metres away, and someone was scratching hard to get into it. If the surfer made the drop and nutted up the barrel then he'd be driving straight into Grant's field of view - bring it on...

Hurley Pro Trestles: Day Two

It was an upsetting day at the Hurley Pro Trestles - literally. The people's favourite, John John, got bundled, as did the winner of the last comp, Ace Buchan.

The surf was also a li'l upsetting, mostly waist high and weak, offering litle opportunity to flair.

Pumping Padang

In mid-to late-August the Indian Ocean fired up in a way rarely seen, even in the depths of Winter. Consecutive storms midway between South Africa and Australia sent over two weeks worth of serious swell north to Indonesia. And as each new swell hit the archipelago protected spots such as Padang Padang came to life.

Thomas Ling was in Bali during the good run of waves and snapped these shots at Padang during just one morning of waves.

Hurley Pro Trestles: Day One

What would Cam Richards do?

That was the question I kept asking myself as Dane Reynolds limped to 6.93 in his Round One heat at the Hurley Pro this morning. In his Round Two heat - versus Kelly Slater no less - Dane cracked double digits, scoring a round 10 points.

That Was Then, This Is Noosa

It's been a tidy little run of waves on the Noosa points. Nothing big, but big enough to ditch the longboards for those so inclined, and persistent enough to sate the appetites of wave starved Queenslanders.

That said, it's flat today. So here are a few photos from then.

South of South

This time last week a mixed crew of surfers and filmers were bouncing about near the edge of Australia's continental shelf. With an incredible swell forecast and equally improbable wind outlook the crew, including Leigh Gapp, Ryan 'Wanga' Waine, Ewan Donnachie, Josiah Schmucker, and filmer Kane Overall, boarded Jeff Schmucker's tub to explore little-known reefs far from the South Australian coast.

Fire In The Sky

Late afternoon somewhere on the Surf Coast and the plunging sun turns the sky orange to red to crimson. One last flare and it's time to go in.
