Charity Board Auction for Bali
Tonight, a vintage McGrigor single fin, painstakingly restored by Levi Jones and sprayed by Martyn Worthington, will be auctioned with all proceeds going to Project Nasi in Bali.
Project Nasi - 'nasi' means rice in Bahasa Indonesian - are a not-for-profit operating out of Denpassar who supply food staples and domestic needs to cash-strapped Balinese suffering under the pandemic.
The board is an early-70s McGrigor downrailer single fin with Uluwatu-inspired airbrush art on the bottom by Martyn. Martyn worked in the McGrigor factory around the time the board was been shaped.
Levi and Martyn have formed a formidable team both restoring old boards - such as this one - or creating their own functional art. Many of their boards are sold well before complettion, such is the demand for their work.
The board is shown below, and you can place a bid on the Vintage Surfboard Collectors Facebook page. The auction will run through to the following Thursday (16th September).

The board has had two owners since new, here’s the board’s story.
"Great to hear that my old board is going to get the royal makeover. I bought the board in 1977 from a friend’s dad who got a new twin fin.
Still have good memories: when I went up north with friend’s and camped out at Point Plomer, Hat Head or Arakoon and chased the waves around the area. Cold nights, cheap camping gear borrowed from friends and family, camp fires on the beach....Cresent Head was amazing.
Mostly though, we went to Cronulla, Narrabeen, Avalon. Had a fairly big wipeout at Avoca one time, wasn’t good, noticed a fine crack or two in the board after that.
I got a board or 2 after that and haven’t used that one for over 30 years. Cheers Mike"
Auction finishes tonight around 8pm, thanks everyone for the support, current highest bid $1700.
SOLD $1800 to Terry. Thanks everyone, got a 70’s Jim Banks single fin getting restored soon, same plan.
