WA Lockdown: "surfing is not deemed exercise"

Craig Brokensha picture

Swellnet Dispatch

During the snap lockdown in Perth on the weekend, video captured by Tania Robbins appears to show police patrolling the coast, telling surfers on loudspeaker that "surfing is not deemed exercise. Be responsible, go home."

In previous lockdowns across other states, surfers were still allowed to get their daily dose of exercise, though limited to a certain radius of movement. Lucky for the CT the lockdown measures have since eased, otherwise we'd all be watching the pros doing squats and burpees on the stairs overlooking Main Break.

If surfing isn't deemed as "exercise", why then are pro surfers referred to as "elite athletes"?

From WA's Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray: "Importantly, it also boosts the profile of the sport in the State and gives our great local talent an opportunity to compete with the world's best through the competition's local wildcard entry."

It’s not authoritarianism blowin, it’s petty bureaucracy. Australia has been world champions of that for a long time.

I can understand why they closed the beaches when they did, but it shouldn’t have been for people getting in the water, just those damned landlubbers. It never made any sense. If they said get in the water then go home, fine. As it was, I was out of the water for 3 months, blowin didn’t miss a day though, and tourists were banned so he had the beach to himself. :-)

Demanding forms are produced in triplicate is petty bureaucracy, locking 2million people in their homes because one person tested positive for a virus in a state with a population density lower than one person per square kilometre is authoritarianism. Criminalising surfing in the vast Indian Ocean because one person tested positive for a virus is incontrovertibly authoritarianism.

The whole state was able to go surfing, we all went to work on Monday, the city shut down for 3 days, most people complied with the minor mandates asked of them, it’s hardly an authoritarian distopia.

No Blowin, getting raped by a priest and having nowhere to go and no-one to talk to about it because no-one would believe you is authoritarianism. Having police pick you up for nothing, harass you, beat you up then throw you out in the gutter and not having any avenue to report it is authoritarianism. Having corrupt pollies getting brown paper bags full of cash for turning a blind eye is authoritarianism.

Setting fire to a ghost train ride because your little mate wants to buy up Luna Park site for a housing development, then having a head cop go in and get the bulldozers in to get rid of all the evidence before a proper investigation is done is authoritarianism.

Having a couple of days lockdown in Perth and Peel districts during a pandemic is just precautionary, smart practice. State population density is a complete red herring. I could equally say that 99% of the state was left unhindered.

Telling people that going surfing is not deemed exercise, is, petty bureaucracy.

You’re old enough to remember what it was like in the 60s and 70s even. Perhaps you lived a golden childhood somewhere in the sticks, or perhaps you have just forgotten what real authoritarianism looks like.

This ain’t it. Respectfully.

I wish I had your rose coloured glasses. Each state is conveniently finding "cases" not deaths (which they don't talk about anymore) just before the expiration of their state of emergency. If I wasn't so trusting I'd say they're manufacturing reasons to extend the state of emergency so that the emergency authorisation of their clotshots can continue. How else are you going to coerce the population to take an untested vaccine that uses messenger RNA to get your body to begin producing a spike protein that it then forms antibodies against. Exactly when your body stops producing these spike proteins is anyone's guess. Oh... that and the fact that it's causing a lot of well documented & severe side effects.

Firstly I'd like to apologise for my initial aggressive tone... and your comeback was shit...

I'd like to make 2 simple assumptions:

1. You'd have to go and Google what an Active Comparator is in the context of the vaccine studies.

2. Your actually knowledge the subject is quite limited and your only source of information on these topics is what Karl, Kochie and the nightly news tell you.

My problem with the above assumptions, if true, is this.

They are currently leading us down a path where you think it's OK for our basic freedoms to be removed on the basis of a lie.

1. The PCR test provides massive amounts of false positives due to the the excessive cycles being used. (

&t=260s) - Straight out of Fauci's mouth that above 35 cycles you can't reproduce the virus and confirm the positive result. I personally confirmed with a lab technician here in Australia doing the actual tests that we were running 40-45 cycles.

2. Death statistics have been padded by including people that died with Covid not just the people that from Covid.

3. Effective treatments that have been available for 50 years and have been shown to work have been banned by the govt because emergency approval of vaccines is only possible when no viable treatments are available. Fauci himself wrote a paper on the effectiveness of Hydroxychloroquine against Coronaviruses.

All of the information above is available to anyone who gives a shit whether we're being lied to in the most monumental way. In a way that is actually a threat to the freedoms of my family and yours.

How's that for f..kn sharp?

wallpaper Thursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 6:17pm

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here and it's pretty clear that neither do you. What 'narrative' and where are the 'inconsistencies'?

I thought I'd take a little look at your first piece of 'evidence' i.e. (as per your post)

"1. The PCR test provides massive amounts of false positives due to the the excessive cycles being used. (

&t=260s) - Straight out of Fauci's mouth that above 35 cycles you can't reproduce the virus and confirm the positive result. I personally confirmed with a lab technician here in Australia doing the actual tests that we were running 40-45 cycles."

you clearly do not understand this. Fauci was talking about using the PCR test (by the way, do you even know what PCR stands for, or what a polymerase is or does?) to detect the presence of active virus on surfaces or in droplets or aerosols. This was nothing about 'false positives'. He was just saying that if you have to run a sample through 30 or 40 PCR cycles before you can get to a piece of nucleic acid that matches a bit of Covi19, then it would be very difficult to say that anything in the sample would be infectious because - and he does say this - you might just be polymerising bits as little as isolated nucleotides and it takes far more than that to constitute a viable virus. He meant you couldn't say the sample was infectious. It was nothing to do with a 'positive result'. In fact if it takes you 50 cyles to get a result, it's still positive in the sense that the sample contains at least bits of virus.

alos great story about the lab technician.

You're confused.

you can't be serious; putting that information up and calling it "science". In terms of double-blind placebo testing, being the gold standard, did it occur to you that vaccinating 60 million people in the UK (alone) is a substantial "test". A little bit more convincing that "studies" you've read I imagine.

As far study time frame goes, your example is very, very short and does not even considering long term complications.

If you also consider that the MRNA vaccines have NEVER, EVER been used on the population before and Moderna has NEVER EVER released a clotshot before, then my confidence begins to erode.

I'm not saying YOU shouldn't get it, I'm saying that with a survival rate of 99.7% I'd find it hard to justify getting an EXPERIMENTAL shot that literally has documented FATAL side effects and fails to prevent transmission.

If you're happy to ignore all of the documented facts I've outlined above, I'd say that your example of what constitutes quality science is pretty short sighted.

CutbackBretto:

1. Its hard to believe on the very day that more than 1 person is dying every minute in India and they have more than 300,000 new infections per day that you can raise such self-entitled, NIMBY comments.

I could mention the infection rate in the US here to; or the sequelae rates globally, or some other conflated arithmetic - but the India situation alone is HORRENDOUS.

2. When you went to school, I'm sure they gave you polio and smallpox injections; and I'm sure your parents didn't feel so self-entitled as to question the health authorities as to the veracity of their vaccines. So unless you're an epidemiologist working for Medicine San Frontier's, your opinion is pseudo-intellectual chaff.

3. In the 20th century alone there were 300,000,000 deaths from small pox, the last in 1975. When did you say you were born? The number of deaths in the 21st century from small pox - zero. The problem was solved by vaccination. Go look at the pictures of children suffering.

4. By necessity, due to the veracity of the transmission process, all of the proposed vaccinations for CV-19 are being tested in relatively "live" environments, compared to similar 20th century global initiatives; that's because 3,000,000 people have already died in less than 12 months and in some country's the transmission rates are still out of control. The death rate is a lag indicator.

By way of contrast, the possibility of "death by vaccination" for the ONLY virus vaccination that has created complications is 1/250,000. The rest are 100% safe.

I don't know how your brain works but mine assesses the above and says: I'm gonna have the vaccine, whichever one they tell me to have, coz there's only a 1/250,000 chance of me dying and every minute I don't, at least 1 person has died somewhere in the world, due to the lack of a long-term solution global solution. The only long-term global solution is by way of vaccination.

I accept the responsibilities and obligations that come from living in the herd - do you?

Seriously I don't want a keyboard battle, your self-entitled, ill informed, micro-perspectives actually make me want to cough all over you, with COVID, and then watch you go crying to the nearest public health hospital looking for free help.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't do that - because it shows a lack of compassion. I'd invite you to think more compassionately tomorrow too.

Considering that India had deployed Ivermectin and their case numbers were well and truly on the decline, I would say that the numbers we're seeing are being used to generate fear to push the clotshot. Since the beginning of their clotshot rollout the numbers have begun to skyrocket. If I believed the tripe their selling us on TV we'd need to have biohazard bins everywhere to ensure safe disposal of masks. If you look into the history Bill Gates in India you'll find a mountain of psychopathic activities that have been well hidden by an excellent public relations campaign.

Additionally, if anyone cared to spend the time, they'd see that Hydroxychloroquine was banned based on studies designed by the WHO that were delivering 4x times the recommended dosage to the study participants and it was killing them. This was used by "Health Experts" & "Health Authorities" in the western nations to ban an effective treatment. They can't have effective treatments if they need to have emergency authorisation on the clotshot...

99.7 % recovery rate. Couple that with the CDC release recently, that only 6 % of ALL deaths reported as COVID can be wholly and solely attributed to COVID, and well fuck me, thats a four fifths chance of fuck all that boogie woogie will get ya. Death rate 0.03 x total covid death 0.06 = peanuts, and that isn't even factoring in the miniscule chance you are going to get it. 1 positive case in a state, and its locked down. 20 deaths from a Vax, and we continue the rollout. Lets not to forget that during lockdown it is okay to visit Dan Murphys and go home and suck piss in a dark room to get you through, but you can't walk your dog, get some exercise, get in the water, get some sun and salt on your face. CBB, I read through your vast number of comments about the COVID-19 response and various statements here and there. I'm not here to attack what you have specifically said as it is quite obvious you have very strong views of the situation at hand. Some of your comments I have looked into to see what 'facts' actually sit behind them, and some I have not (for lack of time/effort).
This one particular above relating to India and the Invermectin use caught my attention and I looked at a few linkages regarding this, as well as clinical studies which showed some benefit gained by front-line hospital workers, etc. - at least from a couple of studies. One in particular (https://www.financialexpress.com/lifestyle/health/covid-19-states-ignore...) linked to a Dr who insists that it is useful to continue to use, and appeared to make strong statements regarding the use and effectiveness of it, etc. But then unfortunately he managed to completely self-ridicule himself by the statement towards the end of the article:
"“Australia has triple therapy protocol for COVID-19 which includes Ivermectin, Zinc, and Doxycycline. This is being widely used in Australia and it controlled the spread of COVID-19 very well. Bangladesh too has successfully implemented this protocol of Ivermectin. It was only after Australia successfully controlled the disease, WHO started talking about this ‘wonder drug’,” he said."
This is completely untrue and Australia has been successful due to our bloody lock-downs! So he just lost all potential 'clarity' or sensibility on the subject. Shame, he was doing so well right to the end...

One must remember that India now has the rampant and more infectious UK variant as well as the double-mutant strain; this alone more likely accounts for the sudden increase in their case loads, not the fact that they are now using covid vaccines - which I think is what you appear to be suggesting. I wasn't entirely sure what TBB was cryptically suggesting in his lengthy post, but it appeared, sadly, to be along a similar line - that the covid vaccines were causing covid cases?
Sorry guys, that's far and away the silliest thing I've read in a long time. Do you really think that every government in the world wants their population to be sick and dying? Is this some kind of 'mass kill' process, do you believe?

And herein lies the problem: you keep saying that 'they' want us to have the so-called 'clotshot', but why do you insist this is worse than taking Hydrox or Invermectin, etc.? Is there something you think is 'hidden' in the anti-viral? You don't actually appear to call out WHAT the specific issue with it is, short of saying that you might get clots - but don't forget the stats that show clotting associated with COVID-19-related illnesses are much higher, so...
Please clarify.

India exploit Vax to play God Everyday...hard to believe they can & do stop this weekly!
All evidence points to India & (World) directly controlling cases to Rise / Fall or Level out!

Firstly...crew will see in Charts that Vax is #1 Covid Case spreader.
2ndly... crew will see how Govt controls everything about the covid spread & cases.

16th Jan Rollout 15,051 c/day 127 d/day > 28th Feb -15,616 c/day >108 d/day
Rollout at own pace = A Few extra cases & Less deaths (Everything is fine & under control)
India's Death toll was nearing a 1year record low & almost had Covid beat...a job well done.

Then outta the blue someone says...lets Ramp the Vax...rest is there for the World to see.
Puppets pushing a Vax Pedal deciding who lives & who dies.

28th Feb India Rollout (Ramps up the Geriatric Genocide)

28th Feb -6th March Vax Ramps > 3rd -12th Vax Ramps 27,512/day (Extra 10,000 cases)

25th-31st March -Vax Halt / Big Drop > 28-31st Cases Halt / Big Drop / Level 53,158/day

1st - 8/12th April -Mega Vax Vert Ramp > 9-18th April Cases Skyrocket 275,306/day
Pause!
If this was out of control then how could they click a button & pull back from that?
Yet they do...all too easy, it's just a game to them!
12th -21/25th - Long Vax Drop > 18-20th Vax cases drop 256,947/day (Amazing!)
Now watch them Ramp it just as easy...press the button...+100,000.
21-22nd > Vax Ramp- 23-25th cases ramp 354,531/day
Again...Money for Jam...
22-24th > Short Vax > Drop 25-26th April Cases small drop 319,435/day
Whatever & wherever you want it...they got it on a string! Lets Ramp more Covid....
25th April -Vax Ramps > 30th April Vax Ramped cases 420,110/day

TBB, I usually find your cryptic diatribes / fact-compilations quite amusing and interesting. But not so the above.
Are you really suggesting that the various COVID-19 vaccines are in fact causing COVID? Seriously?
Or is it more likely that the UK and other mutant strains which have been proven to be even more contagious are causing the horrendous suffering India is now in the grips of?

Hopefully I've been 'duped' / taken in by the above, and you're actually just taking the piss to appear to back CBB's vast number of comments on this...I hope.

Comforting to see you presenting rational, intelligent, scientifically backed comments on this thread. I think it is important that both sides of the argument treat each other with decency and respect. However, many people (including me) who have relatives in other countries who have passed away from COVID-19 find it particularly offensive when the impact of COVID-19 is downplayed by the anti-vax movement. We are so incredibly fortunate to have access to modern medicine, life without it is almost unimaginable until you spend some solid time in the third world. It is unfortunate that this privilege has brought so much entitlement with it. Peace, love, and health

Short comment here. No judgment or bias. Just seemed a little unfair to me.
FYI.
The Police officers were calling that message out to all beach users - not just surfers. That included swimmers, bathers, etc. A similar approach was taken to people sitting on the sand and grass at various times. Equally for people walking their dogs at the dog beaches.
The justification given at the time was that the conduct was not "vigorous exercise" for which no mask was necessary and that all outdoor activities (excluding some exemptions not relevant here) was to be limited to 1 hour.
Perhaps surfing and swimming and bathing and wading and whatever else - especially in those conditions - were not considered to be vigorous exercise. No need to argue either way for this thread.
Leaving aside the 1 hour part, I suspect the police were attempting to issue a polite reminder to all beach goers as the overwhelming majority were not complying with the lockdown rules.
The Lifeguards and Surf Rescue were doing the same thing along the coast - from the vehicle and the chopper. I suspect the local Rangers were doing the same.

Following the opening of the travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand, Singapore could be the next on the cards for Australia's travel bubble.

Singapore has contained the virus well as it hasn't reported any massive transmission after it came out of its two-month lockdown in June last year.

As per the reports, the sovereign island city-state lets visitors from low-risk zones enter its premises like China, Australia, Brunei, Taiwan, and New Zealand. The only protocol includes isolation for a few hours till a negative test report comes in. However, as Australia has not reduced or removed its quarantine demands, it is only a one-way travel passage for now

Last year on the Mornington Peninsula VIC during the 2 month lock-down we were the only shire in Australia that were NOT permitted to go surfing, as the Peninsula was lumped in with Melbourne Metro's lockdown which included no golf, surfing etc. which the Prem touched on in his initial statements ( walking, running, cycling etc was permitted ). It was odd that were were included into Metro's lockdown as we had no Covid cases. We later realised that many of Melbourne's high society have holiday houses on the Peninsula, and could quietly sneak between the City and coast as there were no road blocks between Melbourne and the Peninsula shire.

Anyway couple weeks into the lockdown our legend local councillors did some research and phone calls and realised that actually it was okay to go surfing ( within 5km radius of home and 1 or so hour max, no milling in carparks etc - which was same as other activities ) and that it was in fact exercise etc. So we got back in the water.

The reason I bring this up is we kinda got ZERO love from outsiders when we were the only area not allowed to surf for those few weeks.

I can tell you it really sucked, knowing we had no cases in our shire and everyone else in Australia was surfing without a care in the world. ( I mean I wasn't living in Baghdad, and life could be worse ) But interesting that now WA has surf restrictions it's like ... whoa.

I don't recall any articles, news, mentions on surf media about our surf lockdown? LMK if there were though ...

I dunno, there was a bit of concern from this side for you guys when you went through that - we sympathised with the fight to separate yourselves from the city.

And when you guys did the sign in the surfcam it captured the feeling of the moment pretty accurately - a virus spreading in a large population area and the desire for a coastal town some distance away to close up and protect itself. Early footage from China had villages appoint men with sticks at their boundary to beat unknown people away.

Hey Southey, Sydney’s eastern beaches were locked down for 3 months, weren’t even allowed to go travelling out of Sydney. Northern beaches surfers complained that there were ‘faces in the water they haven’t seen before’.

You were getting sympathy from here, if that helps at all.

Simple maths, a 3 day precautionary lockdown sure beats a 3 month lockdown.

Most of the initial Covid-19 discussion occurred in this article from March last year:

Subsequent discussions around Victoria's lockdown occurred in the previously linked forum topic. Can't recall our specific thoughts at the time (Aug last year) but I suspect we concluded it wasn't worthy of an additional, standalone article when the forum thread was essentially doing the same job.

The west australian mining based economy was an important asset to protect. If covid had got to any of those 2000+ man camps it would of crashed the industry as stopping transmission in those close communities is incredibly hard. You are entitled to your opinion of MG but his landslide was partly due to other idiots like Clive Palmer and the PM trying to force the border open when it was vital to keep the mining industry pumping out exports. Printing more money sends you backwards but you can always sell more gold or iron ore to make money. A lot of WA people have indirect exposure to the mining industry through shares and super, when that is threatened they will vote accordingly even if they have been opposed a particular party all their life. This is pretty much what has just happened.

For some reason Craig, I always thought you were based in Tasmania. I guess not, or you’d have remembered that our beaches were also closed during lockdown. I love that surfers think we are above the laws passed down by the powers that be, but then throw our arms in the air when we see somebody get arrested for crossing the border to buy a fishing rod. It’s a fucking global pandemic people. How about you just shut the fuck up and do what’s asked of you - maybe there’s a reason behind it? I’m the last to agree with the fact that my local beach can be literally empty in winter and I wasn’t allowed to go there but I could go share bodily fluids with 500 other fuckwits in Bunnings, but I did the right thing. Why? Well my wife works front line, and basically had to go to work wearing riot gear. I went to go and take photos of my local break during the height of the pandemic, and filmed guys going through a metal gate with a clear sign saying no entry. Suddenly I’m the arsehole for getting evidence of them breaking the law. All I’m saying is it’s not forever. You won’t die by obeying a few simple requests made of you and not surfing for a little while, but you may actually help a global situation. Hate on me all you like, and then think about how many times you heard about others breaking the rules in a global pandemic and thought “what arseholes”....

"All I’m saying is it’s not forever. You won’t die by obeying a few simple requests made of you" Tell that to the families who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments because they were told that to stay home and do 3-4 shifts per week

Sorry pooman, I obviously missed the part where going for a surf when you’ve been asked not to pays the rent or mortgage. I feel bad for the people that have slipped behind due to lockdowns, but I feel worse for those that died in places that thought lockdowns were a silly idea.

as i missed the part where surfing on you're own is not deemed as exercise but running down the footpath in the city is exercise. Everyone dies some day, the flu will probably get them next winter

Sorry, I also forgot to mention that my business closed due to Covid. Am I allowed to have a cry now, or do I just get on with life and accept that my family and friends are all safe and healthy. By all means, feel free to keep lecturing me on inconveniences though...

India's greatest living writer Arundhati Roy calls Covid and the response to it in India a "crime against humanity."

Some anonymous poster on the internet insinuates it's a hoax and part of a conspiracy theory.

Hnmmmmm...who to believe.

Deary me, poo man. If you’re serious then you’re a self righteous, misinformed proponent of the NIMBY ideal.
If you’re trolling then you’re a tragic, sarcastic bore. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Friends, when the “Man” tries to tell us surfing is not exercise, she is telling us to suspend our mental faculties of rationality and logic.
She is making us engaged in Owelian double think. To know something is incorrect but to not call it out.
This is a smooth road to totalitarianism, if we are not already there.
Freedoms are not taken, they are meekly surrendered by the timid.
Right now the “rules” are poorly defined, and are regularly exceeded. When they scream at you through a megaphone, simply politely enquire as to where their authority is legally derived. It’s not OK for them to just assume it.
It is very important to push back against the exceedance.
Push back against the bullshit.
It is OK to go for a paddle.
It is OK to lie on the beach next to the person you have slept with last night.
It is OK to live, love, breath the air
and it’s OK to FU KEN SURF!
