Swellnet Dispatch

Here today, wasn't yesterday. Nothing but a pile of rocks offshore from a straight stretch of sand. A magnet for pelagics and the big fish that follow them - or so the news stories go. Though of course it could be a beat up by the crew protecting their new patch of turf.

Take the risk if you dare.

Andrew Shield did and this is what he saw.

Irrespective of how perfect the lineup , the wave , the location or the day , a photo of someone getting dropped in on , or a shot showing crew trying to drop in / Chandelier the section from the shoulder , is the ultimate cold spoon.

Any surf buzz is immediately dissipated.

But yeah , the reef looks OK. Was there anything at all there pre-reef ?

If that's the case I'd look the other way when any shots of Winkipop appear on your screen. Unless it's really tightly framed you'll see someone up and riding and a conga line from uppers to the valley either dropping in or paddling their hardest to drop in.

WOTD a cupla days ago a case in point. I can be there in 5 minutes but crossed it off the list years ago...

Welcome back to "No Fly Zone GC Airport WSR Artificial Reef Battledrome"
Surf Sticker Drone vs Little Ripper Shark Drone
GWS is circling the break eagerly awaiting his opponent for the final.

Palm Beach Artificial Reef Timeline (swellnet exclusive)

Nearest breaks were 21st Ave step down Groyne Right flooding 24th Left Bombie
2012 > Currumbin Ck sand pumps ramp up to near smother all Palmy breaks.

2015 Sand filled to Groyne ends on big high tides (Almost burying 21st Ave Groyne)
Reports: Beach + off shore reserves as best this century & 4th best since 1960's
Locals could swear the best widest beach Palmy ever had! (Long bank one closeout)

2016 ECL Ripped into Burley Pool > Sydney Beach pools > Tassie (Massive EC ruin)
Palm Beach lost no more than 5m & was still very healthy & recovering well!

2017 (Winter) Rainbow Dredge shelved a long plateau around PB Artificial Reef.

2018 New outta Rainbow bank starved inside Palm Beach & started erosion process.
Palmy atoll outta bombie race track closeout with a swirling dead zone inside.
Nothern Palmy + Laceys Lane did offer some break thru relief & got busy alright.

2019 PB Artificial Reef Cost $18.2m ...(Family correction swear gospel $30m)
tbb's Diving family... involve in Diving-Reefs,ocean access, costings & know more.
(Same conversation) Whole base level of Boulders were wrong size (Complete Redo)
Double Mid Winter Lows shuffled the Strike Plate only.

Whale Season: The very instant dredges packed up (few times) Whales would venture in.
Soon as Dredge returns the whales were frightened off.
Locals residents told tbb + can confirm Whales were in close on reef the day after a pack up.
Tappa recorded the same deal with Rainbow Dredge [FACT] Dredging keeps whales out.

July: Reef level was often above the near finished sea level...(The ankle deep Jump off era!)
Concerns were noted as to shallow nature...GCCC kept coy but site workers said this & that.
Then the top was taken off to sit .5m under low tide..(As per specs)
All up 3x boulder reworkings (Start / damage / finish) none recorded on public record!

(Pause)
Divers say Creek bars > Blow up tanks + Snorkel don't do rough sweeping surf!
Dive community say Reef means nothing to them...Hence the $30m waste exampled!
tbb's twin sister did a PB Reef Dive report for the Local Paper a while back

23rd Oct Sand Pad inside Groyne looks to hold or add a touch to now eroding beach
tbb questions that sand is eroding further about where needed most ... (A lemon!)
Dec tbb's Aerial checks reveal continual erosion...noticeable with each months tides.
The Beach once level with Groynes now has waves climbing berm & eroding dunes.
At same time GCCC were mining an asbestos dump in the very same PB dunes.

The once best beach of this century is fast eroding with one eye on cyclone season.
Palm Beach has now lost over 40m of beach since GCCC Rainbow/Reef project.
Worse still the rate of erosion is increasing...line in the sand, now a long swim back.

Dec- GCCC Lower > Hi-Rise & Light Rail Up Zones along Palm Beach ocean side.
This is almost a miracle on Gold Coast...(No precedent for GCCC backdown exists?)

Dec- Record amount of Cornflakes on the beach were reported thicker on the Reef
(Important)The Cornflakes would likely permeate the reef (fast track marine habitat)

Jan...The reef is no land bridge but more an outta Island with Sharks Circling (SLSQ).

Palm beach is nearly gone due to GCCC not the ocean... (Biggest Reef Fail Ever!)

This Reef will be gone before GCCC rolls the barrels up to Kelly's front door
Kelly checks out his Palmy sunken Lounge wave pool around Corona Pro time (Soon)
Be a good idea to sneak a surf in, before he pulls in the drive! (Not gonna be pretty!)

Cheers Roystein (disclaimer) tbb is a local and as said with some inside knowledge.
Goldie crew trip over shit as a way of life...passing the baton on...to lighten the load.

Upfront!
tbb has visited Reef a few times & watched it being surfed but is too ill to test it out.
On the surfing side, tbb knows little as such & also values the swellnet Palmy wraps.
Locals often talked about the shallow Mach 1 but less so after the block knock off!
tbb is guessing it breaks less so than end of winter but puts out with bigger swell.

Fellow swellnet crew are much more qualified for Surf Reef analysis...
eg: warddy knows more than he's lettin' on & fires off a cracker about GC (N) & kelp.
Wave of the day ~~~~^~~~~/(`~~~~/C`........./(C`..[warddy)

Gold Coast has had an annoying run of Northerlies (known for eroding n/e beaches)

Yes! At first GCCC / swellnet reported a slight pad of sand inside the Reef.
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcS7s-FoAb__-OAJf7...

See: North sand bank merging inside to Groyne sand pad as an inside Goofs Point.
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcRuw6QFiwOdLR0PqF...
July: Locals described linking this rogue inside skippy left...(Possible it did bank?)
Inside left point looked as if it may bridge with reef for an almighty Right / Left Point.
tbb suggested this & never thought up any erosion & loss of beach...(Trick of the eye!)

Little known to us locals, the Rainbow Dredge had already started the erosion.
That sand pad we see before us is merely a last patch of sand proudly holding out.
GCCC vanishing beach trick, mastered by SCC- which PFAS ocean outlet (You Lose!)

Thanks to WRL...warddy can check (S) Rainbow Bank erosion vs (N) Reef Erosion
[important] Rainbow Bank ends to Plateau for Reef (No sand dumped north of Reef)

This image equals Jan'2015/20 tides +( post Rainbow Dumping & pre- Reef Build).
24 Jan 2019 Tide [ 01. 81 m ]
http://ci.wrl.unsw.edu.au/current-projects/central-gold-coast-palm-beach...

Notes: Erosion in progress over whole Beach but mostly aligned to Rainbow bank.
We can attribute later more recent hastening Northern erosion to the Reef (2020 ^)
Seemingly the overriding factor is these outer Reefs/Bommies starve middle breaks.
This fuels inside washbowl with cutting cross swells acting like blades on the beach.
The whole system is ramped up by (unusual) run of equally cutting Northerlies.
Some photos show the Reef as the instigator of these inside cross cutting shears.

Furthermore these mini striking cross frames pack a punch on groyne head & collars.
Gonna make light work of puny Palmy dunes, not robust enough for the onslaught.

warddy rightly points out the record seaweed factor...tbb did visit at the time.
Seaweed would bank & corner more wave action toward the Groyne & Reef more so!
Good chance some of the collaring around the Groynes hastened the erosion process.

Might check on other reefs / groynes with Seaweed clumping weight & wave erosion
Burleigh Point has hosted Seaweed on numerous occasion.(1930's + 2010's mostly).
Consider All GC Groynes possibly for the first time engage & harbour seaweed.(rare!)
Now that's a whole new habitat! (Good! for some better for a 4m Great White Shark?)
Mayor hired 'A List Shark' to promo 'What's new, very GC seaweed snack bars'.
Sharks use Cornflakes as cover as Dolphins can't echolocate amongst it!

Curved Ball..or pinball effect.
Reef has created a giant pinball machine with waves /tides bouncing within confines.
Consider wave dynamics of a multi faceted Pinball Machine of endless ricochet.

tbb is saying...GCCC has lost control of any predictable data...it's 100% make believe.
Infinite interaction (Rainbow Bank < > Reefs < > 3 Groynes < > Seaweed < > Dunes)
Original Talle Ck-Groyne / The Point / Palmy Reefs / Bommie all interacting with Reef.
The Reef is now that kick ass pop bumper (No hands on the flipperz & win high score)

Not one surface of continuous measurable length of 2m or more. (It's anyone's guess)
tbb asks Crew! Who here thinks any whitecoat or whiteshoe can bank on that?

PS. Prior to PB reef crew asked if Burleigh Point would come into play.
tbb can only give a landlubbers version.
Talle groyne has lost half it's sand +Waves splash higher @ Rivermouth of The Point.
Surfers might see cove breaking in closer but B'hds sand pump fills level with Point?
That describes a closeout scenario but Northerlies & Cyclones break it down some.
Cool if surfers could report on Cove... Is PB reef eroding NP/WSR habitat....Anyone!

Tbb
Most outer bombies off beaches seem to end up with beach widening in their lee. The cross waves create mini longshore drift effects both ways moving sand to a focal point. Over time this should occur at Palmy too. In the short term other factors may be at work i.e. the northerlies.

In terms of erosion though, one little reef is just a blip in the overall sand movement equation. Cyclones and the existing sand movement trends totally over ride its impact. I suspect it wont be a fail or a cause of problems rather it will be like a larger boulder in a stream with minor local impacts but no change to the overall stream path

tbb trusts the crew & took on board yer wisdom & so dug a little deeper.
Been real busy on this + The Narrowneck Top Up Reef & sure enough, it's the same.
But as the crew hinted it may not be the Reef at fault...tbb is listening...Honestly!

Current Reef Erosion.
Measurements from pre new Reef works until now... (Finished Works)

Narrowneck is eroding 20m Northside to Spit & Eroding 10m south toward Surfers
Notes: Spit Dune vegetation is missing...(Factors: 3 fires / Dog invasion / tidal flows)

Palm Beach is eroding 40m Northside to Talle & eroding 20m >10m south to SLSC.

Both Reef tides erode dunes but now on a daily basis.(Previously only Cyclone surge)
tbb compared = High & Low tides of all season & above figures are kind to the Reefs.

tbb will recap..
Seaweed + Northerlies can be attributed to PB Reef Erosion but less so Narrowneck.
tbb did also note erosion began with Rainbow Banks...clearly evident on South'sides.

Dredging Factor...
Talle Creek annual Sand Pumping is said to nourish beaches North of Narrowneck.
PB 11th Ave Groyne > Currumbin Ck is replenished by annual end of year Pumping.

Rainbow (Offshore Dredge + Pump)
Dumps were restricted to the southside of both Reefs

New & Unique Factors.
(As said, repeated Spit Bushfires, Dogs, Northerlies, Seaweed!)
Any/All could account for dune erosion, inviting tide higher.(All seldom studied)
tbb has hinted that wind does play a role at Narrowneck + Miami. + South Palmy.
Not done the seaweed homework as promised...could be more to that!
Dogs are now half of population (Massive increase on Dog Beaches > Dune Erosion)

Natural Reefs'
Recent News stories will back up tbb's claim on loss of inshore sand! (*First Clue!)
Nearby Reefs are also losing sand ...1st time in 20 years- host & feed Large Turtles.
This means erosion is serious has been ongoing to create a stable habitat.
(Pause) Beach is losing habitat but inshore Reefs are gaining Habitat. (Unusual)

Kirra Reef
https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/lifestyle/pets-and-wildlife/the-kir...

Scottish Prince Reef is being revealed more each day + Large resident Turtle.
https://www.facebook.com/ScottishPrinceWreck/

Less sand inshore & dropping deeper out past Storm banks! ( *Now 100% Verified)

tbb was stumped...So what could be the cause of total Mass inshore sand depletion?
Some Holy Grail for Climate Change Extinction troops...(Do the seas rise this fast?)

Tweed Sand Bypass.
Recent Figures show 20% less Qld sand dumps from Start of Projects until now.
https://www.tweedsandbypass.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/11456...

New Back Dumping of Sand to Fingal again accounts for a months most recent loss.
https://www.swellnet.com/news/swellnet-dispatch/2019/07/18/tweed-river-d...

tbb stupidly thought that's it! Could that amount justify a mass inshore loss of sand!

(Pause!) The answer was obvious and lies buried in the detail above...Anyone?

Clue! tbb started to Dream about Rainbows & where they come from!
Found this innocent GCCC picture book from 2013 & solved the sands of time riddle.
https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/documents/bf/three-point-plan-for-coast...
"The 3 Point Plan for Coastal Protection" (Sure sounds like a Fairytale)
Flick to Page 12 / 20 & the answer stares you in the face.

The Rainbow dredge does no more than borrow sand to buy time.(A trick of the eye!)
Here's the thing...the payback is 10 years of no beaches & threatened WSR breaks.

The operation requires huge resource as it needs to dig massive Quarries!
Basically (10 years) of Bypass Sand needs to first fill the Rainbow Dredge Quarries.
These Super Hungry Rainbow Quarries are starving 10 yrs of sand to GC Beaches...

[factcheck] 300,000 m3/ yr sand bypass is the max to host Turtles on GC Reefs.
Once you go over this Tally, GC robs Turtle's climate change southern habitat exodus.
You see, even if GC doesn't nest Turtles it must not starve the growing south escape.
Climate Change heat is cooking turtles in their nests, they must live amongst us or die!

All 2017 GC Rainbow Quarries (3,000,000 m3) require 10 years Bypass sand to fill.
Only after these Quarries fill level, can the sand naturally flow toward our beaches.
Note: Hacks can manage to run a rake over a sand bunker..(So our seabed is crap?)
Bigger Note: Don't let these cowboys back on our sea course ever again.

Phase-1 PB > Tugun Rainbow Quarry is the biggest, measuring a huge 470,000 m3.
2019 'Tweed Sand Bypassing' ...for first time barged sand North to this Quarry!)
How much did they dump into this Bottomless Pit? (Answer = 30,000 m3) Cough!!!
Swellnet crew spoke of the epic adventure & resource required for just one drop!
Not being silly but this was probably as good as it gets! Perhaps it was a back pedal.

That's right! The $30m Great White Shark Reef is now the pick of the litter!

As it stands it will take 10 years to stop GC erosion & 15 years to stop PB erosion.

Too expensive & time consuming to barge sand to Quarries so by pass pumps are only solution.
This is also the most wasteful option as most sand builds higher on outposts wide of the targets
Note: Kirra + Greenmount + Snapper West Pumps no longer see action > (Kirra Point/Reefs)
Meaning D'bah & Froggie's pumps are our only tool to fight GC beach erosion

Bury Snapper a further 4m to fill Quarries to rescue Dutto & Kelly's seachange outposts
Land locked Snapper to play in the sand pit with Cooly kids Kirra & Greenie.
Superdooperbank Timeshare Party Wave from Tweed River mouth to Currumbin Ck.
tbb & others here warned of WSR Snapper entering Top 10 endangered waves list.

GCCC reclaim Cooly WSR for Whiteshoes & whack it on yer rates, hardly a fuck up is it!
Tip! Surfers should at least claim they sacrificed their WSR to save GC beach properties.
Trade off may be enough to buy shares on a new fake WSR out off Cape Danger.

TBB: that makes a lot of sense regarding the huge holes dredged by the rainbow bank boat a few kilometres offshore needing to be filled in by longshore drift before the sand can make its way to shore in its natural order.

Those rainbow banks created some great waves for a time. There were epic banks directly out from my apartment near the Jewel for a few years.

But it sounds like the project could have done lasting damage to the Gold Coast beaches over the medium to longer term?

Real can of worms that one......

Here's a map of these Massive Quarries...P 12/20
https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/documents/bf/three-point-plan-for-coast...

Note: frog says 72,000 m3 to be dumped off Burleigh Point.
Recall above (up to 80,000 max - check! + 1985 Dumping off Point - check!)
This payload is to feed starving Hedges Ave Millionaires inside of Quarry/s ( 86 / 2 )
Could well be the makeshift fix, to juggle these loads until Quarry/s are filled.

The 16,000 m3 in front of Pub is just returning people's beach path..(As above).
Barefoot crew are getting glass in their feet from Bouncer's queues (Our Oceanway!)
Doubles as slow release to Flagged Beach as rest is forfeited to sure up Hedges Ave.

frog speaks of renourishing Palm Beach.

1) Kelly's $3m Beach Volleyball court is now only half of what it once was!

2) Have ya got a spare truckload to fill in Dutto's $4m sandcastle moat...pay yer back!

Whack it on tbb's rates, he's too stupid to know any better.

Palm Beach Artificial Reef Erosion cont....

Beneath measurements marry the highest 'matching' am tidal measurements.
Due to the fog & poor light fouling the reads > tbb afforded 3 measurements to review
These equally example tides either side of 2015 similar measure. ( No trickery! )
Neither hide the fact that The Artificial Reef is fast eroding Palm Beach.

19th Jan 2015 ( 7: 00 am ) Tide [ 1: 71 m ]
http://ci.wrl.unsw.edu.au/current-projects/central-gold-coast-palm-beach...

5th April 2020 ( 6:00 am ) Tide [ 1: 69 m ]

7th April 2020 ( 7:30 am ) Tide [ 1: 74 m ]
http://ci.wrl.unsw.edu.au/current-projects/central-gold-coast-palm-beach...

Furthermore tbb can't locate any reviews of Artificial Reef since completion or post Cyclone.
Difficult to fathom how this iconic $30m Reef busily eats away Palm Beach without a care

Crew have asked if Outer Palmy Reef broke here...Yes a Skipping Righthander.
Dug up this photo to show typical short skipping reforming PB bommie.
Pretty sure this is the day after Cyclone Debbie / mid arvo 31st March 2017
(Note the clearing clouds & dirty brown Talle Creek is just starting to release. )
Rainbow Dredge dumped loads of sand from there south in the winter of (2017)
tbb has seen this bommie *R / L being paddle & tow surfed a few times.
Note low tide (4:30pm) see: More likely than not, that's a jetski 'scouting' the right.

PS: *Water research Laboratory Coastal Imaging (Last Image) 15th May 2020
Archive is still available pre 15th May 2020 but sadly prohibited from there forth.
Thankfully WRL restored linked archive images (Above) but Load Time has slowed.
It seems WRL public tool is no longer essential in post Covid -19 world.

Alt : Select desired GC Seaway Tide Charts (pre-post Reef)
CW PB/CA surf cam (Freeze at top of north pan)
All PB groynes should be clearly in view.
Then compare archived WRL image to "similar" Time / tide on (Paused) CW image.

Palm Beach is eroding with new GCCC works but Nth PB is still free of Hi-Rise.
1970's Turtles laid eggs at Nth Palm Beach & reef may yet again support such.

Cheers Batfink...actually managed a visit to the Reef last Friday. (Not onto the Sand)

Bang on Low Tide so beach was healthy enough at that time.
{RIP} Monument is Pride Of Place on the Beach but not out of Place...kinda respectful.

Credit to the Reef Local....
Reef seems to have settled from Low Tide knee Height to now waist Height.
Good solid Southerly ground swell of a few feet with a good wind push.
Low Tide the swell races & hits all surrounding banks but not the Reef...(Strange)
As the tide rolled back in it started to cap the Reef.
High Tide seems to raise & Stall the Swell to Pitch onto The Reef (Strange)
The ride is said to be Short/er, onto High Tide is Best & Busiest ( Pushes thru...)

No recent sighting of "Toni " the GWS.

Light Rail is dominating Palmy News (None Want it) $1b Fighting Fund...is the claim.
Hwy will be de-mained to 2 ultra slow lanes for continuous Hi-rise Bank / Moat.

Usually these Nerdy Transport Maps throw a side banana in for a laugh.
So tbb wotz this bent banana + wotz it got to do with Surfing Palmy or The Reef.

Everything!

Recap the original Plans that featured a Cape & a Long Sand bommie at South Palmy.
https://www.smh.com.au/content/dam/images/4/e/3/a/5/image.imgtype.videoT...

Ok! We're all on the same page...now tbb has gone on about Cape a few times.

11th Ave also is suffering the worst erosion from the Rainbow / Reef Combo
Kelly's Pad if you like, has lost his Beach Volleyball court (Mid-High Tide)

GCCC unbelievably scaled back beach Hi-Rise South from here...(Are you insane!)
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-13/palm-beach-building-heights-reduc...

Anyhow, this Cape smothers 11th Ave Groyne to extend level with outer backbreak.
About 3x the length of Groyne or Current low tide beach 300m out x 500m beach
Little to nothing at all has been said by Council on Reef, Light Rail, Cape or Bommie.

Today the GCB runs LR Routes & there looks to be a Palmy Cape in the Sketch.
Only exactly where it's meant to be...(Coincidence?)
Council & Govt must know that Reef is eroding near the groyne & PB cape is the fix!
See also the exaggerated straight wide Laceys Lane..that's the Sand Bommie / beach
https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/0ccc95fb3208f5c3fe42c43205484f94?wid...

In other words Brisbane saw red when GCCC waved goodbye to #1 Stamp Duty!
Out of our way you bumbling fools...We'll widen yer fuckin' beach!
Take a long look at the new Palm Beach shoreline...that's not a computer Glitch.
That is how State Govt sees their future investment...
Both the Cape & Bommie are then backfilled by Rainbow to form what you see here.
tbb is not making this up...This was explained by original project team..(Went silent!)

New wide beach affords Oceanway the same way as Back Pass pipe (Northern end)
Likely beach bar lease retail for council, but Stamp Duty insurance for the State Govt.
Timeshare Trolley rises Towers, together moat out locals by limiting beach access.
By simply partitioning off the Grom Hangs increases beach value exponentially.
That's their New Beach...Sorry No Parking for Locals! They don't mention that either.
