Love how honest Dane is.
Joel Tudor at the end there talking about his convo with George G saying fish and jets aren't asymmetric so why make an assym board?

Well fish and jets aren't being driven by someone side on.

Though I still haven't ridden any assyms, but I see the logic behind it.
Bryce Young is amazing on them.

I agree, we're not driving them straight like standing on a SUP with a foot near each rail. We're side on and applying different pressure to each rail outline etc.

Also, fish and jets have moving parts to change direction, so while changing direction are they still symmetrical? Or are they only symmetrical while going in a straight line?
I don't think you can throw asymmetrical boards out the window just because jets and fish are symmetrical, especially if you consider the way fish and jets, slow down, speed up and change direction is different than a surfboard.

George is excused cos he's a kneelo, there's no toeside and heelside, no backhand or forehand on a kneelo, but Tudor has no such excuse. He has a habit of talking (or typing) before he thinks, and his argument here displayed kindergarten-level cognition. Profoundly dumb.

Hahaha... spot on analogy. Was amazing the change in his surfing when he got on a (too small) Neckbeard CI, with rocker he's use to (and rocker that frankly, seem to fit the waves).

I'll clarify what I meant .... No doubting Dane's staggering ability and lighting quick reflexes and decision making, he monsters waves, but I would have preferred to see Tudor or Rasta on those boards. If you want to see how smooth Tudor is try watching One California Day, a classic .... and I still remember how smooth Curran was at JBay in one of those RipCurl Search DVDs.

Wow he’s good. It really demonstrates how board design influences what we can or can’t do on a wave. Interesting comment that the thruster is the Swiss Army knife of surfboards, and the only thing that actually matters when you’re a recreational surfer is how it
feels.

Yeah it was pretty interesting to see how limited mid-length boards are for performance surfing. When he got on the neck beard, it went up about 5 levels. Something to be said for stock standard shapes and a thruster.

I think the whole concept was a waste of time by choosing Dane Reynolds as the test rider, as great a surfer as he is single and twin fin boards do not go well with his style of surfing. Maybe I'm a bit old but massive hacks are not what appeals to me when i think about twinnys

So it’s not just me who can lose 90 percent of their ability on the wrong board.

Bit of a shame that Dane’s 10 percent ridicules my 100 percent though.

What's amazing is, even when things go wrong, how hard he tries to keep wrangling the thing. No easing off or picking a soft line, maybe throw a soul arch and crooz throo a section, he leaps out of a bogged rail into a big blow tail attempt, or an air, or a buried cutty. He just doesn't let up.

Dynamite surfing.

I’d rather watch that style of surfing over the JJF dead arms any day of the week. It’s when JJF gets involved that his surfing appeals. Take Margie’s for example.

Give me drama and energy .

Even Curren had flair.

Dane is my favourite surfer in the world. No question. But I don't really see the point of trying to surf all of these different boards just like a standard thruster. Surely your reference point should shift with the nuance of each design to achieve the full benefit? Just seems very limiting and short sighted to attempt to ride them all the one way.

Here's an idea for the Top 40 circus thingie. Zero loading if surfing a standard 5'8" 25.467895 litres pro-lite white thruster that they all surf and then add some sort of loading to wave scores if surfing a twin fin, keel, single, bonzer or whatever. It would enliven contests from powerful surfing but same same and make pros think outside the 3 fin box.

I think again that we mistakenly think WSL runs the WCT as a competition. It is a business run as a business. More chance of building pools in China to tap into new markets than doing something pure that only existing surfers could appreciate

I'm fairly sure this test was a collaboration with Stab, if I'm wrong … mehhh! But it's a poorly disguised and blatant add for CI. Of course Dane is gunna rip on his board, especially when some of the others are so different, and the end result is Neck Beard as the winner, not hard to pick and no doubt CI NB sales will climb upwards.
The Joel Tudor criticism of assym's is definitely his own ( it sounds like it's Georges too ), nobody has proved that assyms are more than just an alterenative idea more to me than the clips I've seen of Ryan Burch surfing G Land and Deserts. His surfing is so different to Dane's but none the less impressive and like the NB and Dane, his assyms suit his style perfectly. In a way Ryan would have been a more accurate test pilot on the varied craft, simply because he surfs absolutely anything really well, IE a block of un-glassed, finless foam
It's hard to gauge anything from this test other than how hard Dane rips, he's mind blowing on his NB.

I'd say going by those deck depressions I'd say some of those boards were pretty lightweight. More so than normal off the rack retros.

There’s one wave that looked solid, then no more filming of that session. Reckon Dane went and borrowed a board and ditched the boards on acid, and went to town as he does.

The Neck Beard, that board is ugly as shit, but Dane was shredding and going so fast. He was catching rail or over correcting and just driving through it into the most ridiculous blow tail whatsamacallit type turns.
Joel Tudor is classic funny too, would have liked to seen him surf some of those longer boards. What an epic trip it would be with those two.
I have spoken a few times to Dane in Indo and Oz and he is very real, polite and not big headed at all.

Talk about negativity ..the majority of the comments reek of condascention and a suggestion of intention far outweighing ability.Perhaps the peanut gallery should have someone video themselves surfing and then make a comparison. It might also be mentioned ol mate went down to Mexico previously having not surfed any of those boards previously and in my humble opinion did a sterling effort, faaark i thought that some damn sic surfin.

Good to watch for the most part but it took me a while. What a job though. He seems like a down to earth bloke, and man he has got some skillz. Got to wonder whether it should be called the 'half test' as everything was ridden on his forehand.

I'm no surf board shape connoisseur and my quiver is more of a quiv, but from this test I am happy to stick with the good ol' Swiss Army knife thruster.

At least it got me thinking it might be time to get myself a shorter 'short' board.

The surfing he did on the Neckbeard was fucking incredible!
No one puts as much stress and pressure on their fins and boards like Dane.
When he's on the right board he's almost untouchable imo. Crazy good surfing.
I wonder if he gets to the end of a wave sometimes and just thinks, "wtf just happened?"
he is just going Mach 10 the whole time going berserk

Yep he is my favourite surfer these days. That clip in bali where he was going ballistic and this one was off the charts. Geez how hard does he go at it he is almost the antithesis of Medina: the latter is like a surgeon and everything is measured, accurate and like a Swiss watch; the former is a raging bull just absolutely throws the kitchen sink at anything that looks like a wave and you jaw hits the ground. Nobody has mentioned that he thought it was weird the thruster was included and that he noted that his style doesn't really suit these boards.

I thought he did pretty good on the Liddle halfway through the session when he finally started turning it from the middle of the board instead of the tail. He’s a freak of a surfer! Seems like he can’t calm himself down enough to ride in a more mellow style, which is required of most of those boards, he’s too much of a shredder!!!!

drodders's picture
drodders's picture

He killed it on the shorter fish style boards, and both asyms, I liked the whole clip, was great to see him wrangling different boards.

This also shows why most of us go better in average surf without a thruster (quads, twins, widow makers etc.), these boards offer less drag, more speed for the average surfer. If you are not heavily on rail all the time thrusters will create more drag, but during a turn (or on a steep wave) with the rear fin and one side in the water they have lowish drag...I still like thrusters, but even when I ride them I use a smaller rear fin, and I only use them when the surf is hollow, thrusters also suit rocker, all works together in the pocket or in hollow surf.
