Adopt a surf break, and save your local

More than two years after it was declared a National Surfing Reserve, local custodians of the South Australian Mid Coast Surfing Reserve have begun a new scheme where members of the public can look after individual surf breaks along the reserve.

Called "Adopt a Surf Break”, the Mid Coast Surfing Reserve committee are asking volunteers to undertake basic cleaning and maintenance of each break's car park, such as picking up rubbish, reporting damaged equipment and emptying the new ‘Butt Bins’ created especially for the Surfing Reserve.

“Discarded cigarette butts form a large percentage of litter along the Mid Coast, and a stiff easterly wind blows them into our ocean”, says Mid Coast Surfing Reserve committee member Chris Lemar.

“Not many people know the Butt Bins exist, and when there are waves, all the parked cars hide the bins from view. We believe if smokers knew of the bins then they will look for them.”

Lemar is hoping that their application for a local grant to manufacture stainless steel cigarette bins will be successful.

Great idea. I live on the surf coast and the amount of rubbish being left in the beach car parks has been growing and growing, there is a lot more people around here nowadays, both day trippers and locally residing but I just don't understand how some humans can trash exactly what they've come to enjoy. Shitting in the bushes, ciggy butts, coffee cups, I could go on and on. My pet hate is dog shit. There's a 150 meter concreted track leading down to the beach I surf alot and it's dogshit ally. There's those who just refuse to clean up after they're pooch, those who claim to have "not seen it happen"( maybe because you've let your dog wonder off) and worst of all, those who pick up the dog shit in a bag then proceed to leave the shit AND a plastic bag all because they don't want they're precious little cars smelling a little off for a short while until they find the next bin.. I'm a dog owner by the way...I'm going to put up some homemade signs and see if that makes any difference.and take a few bits of rubbish off the beach while your there to.
Seems like only a matter of time before I end up in a scuffle with some
scumbag at centres carpark over something so obvious. To me anyway.

Just as Tim B (big wave project) has promoted, there is a program for 'pick up three'. Means just pick up a bit while you walk back to the car or out of the surf. Its easy, quick and you tend to feel you have paid your dues for the ride you just had. Ill leave the dog shit there - why pick it up.

One local check spot couldn't be more than 30 metres wide with two big bins right in the middle you can't miss, yet it's constantly covered in cigarette butts. Mainly from surfers checking the surf too which is pretty disgraceful. I guess if you're that fucking dumb that you actually smoke, the health of your local's not high on your list of concerns.

As tony mentioned http://www.take3.org is a great initiative. Not sure how much difference it makes but I always grab any rubbish I see on the way back to the car.
