The Eddie will not go this year

fb-default.jpgFollowing months of rumours, the family of Eddie Aikau has severed ties with Quiksilver ending their thirty-year contest partnership. The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau was first run in 1986 and has become the world's premier big wave event.

The Aikau family said that they weren't able to reach a deal with the event sponsor and that they're still pursuing several options to try to continue the contest. However, there will be no contest during the 2016-17 surf season because of how the application and bidding process works for the invitational.

"It's unfortunate because the Quiksilver application was based upon it being the Eddie, and we have informed Quiksilver that they are the awardee but they would have to hold  the event as the Eddie," Honolulu city spokesperson Georgette Deemer told Hawaii News Now. "So unless there is some kind of resolution that's the only way it appears the Eddie could go forward."

The Aikau family plans to hold a press conference Monday where more information will be released.

Brilliant quote. He was also tutor of Nero, who in one instance appeared as the bride in a ceremony and wedded himself to his favourite slave boy, then consumated the marriage. Just saying.

My favourite scene is Pompey tying elephants to his chariot instead of horses for his triumph, and it being too big to get through the triumph arch...

Hmmm, The Eddie became a WSL Specialty Event last year. Were there any other WSL events where the sponsor continued to deal directly with the stakeholder instead of the WSL?

Yeh but surfers can still send shots to WSL for them to run on their Insta and Facey accounts. It's the same as it ever was, except without prizemoney.

They should run it as a community based contest. Forget Quicksilver or the WSL neither of them own surfing.
