Pedra Branca from the air

The mighty Pedra Branca dished up a mackin' early season swell on Sunday, with the Tassie boys getting stuck into some big bombs. Stu Gibson positioned his drone above the action - here's a tasty teaser for ya. To keep up with all of Stu's missions check his Facebook page.

Thats how we do here in Tassie
Southern Lords!

No blow ins
Who'd want to come here to surf that anyway?

I'm sure the stories of huge sea life out there is enough to keep the mainlanders at home,
not to mention the amount of water on the peak.

No MC,

many have come and blown the secrets of this place.

i'm sure there are hundreds still out there in the remote, un-accessable terrain we have here.

My earlier blow ups were:
Some come from a land of No exposure, however, They see fit to expose other lands and even their own!
Some say No to contest, sign petitions!, however, win photo contests at the same location. x 2

I just saw a double standard. just my view.

I am accepting of lots of different views and opinions. even the hypocritical, but it was worth noting those!

good luck to the boys at Pedra, there were waves else where.
All coasts. Not like that though!
How was that swell and winds in Vic and WestCoast SA?

Caml,
your friends from west Coast SA are the warring ones, fighting the contest.
. No exposure.
like your new found friend in MC
You my friend, are caught in between where your once humble big wave exploits were like legend, myth, to now , where you want recognition and payment for your hard charging. If not the case, you wouldn't throw your hat in the ring and expose the waves your new friends are so fiercly fighting to keep out of the exposure meter.

confused?
I was when i saw the hypocricy coming from the keyboards of both you two fine surfers.

s-l ... your on an island .... any sizable swell is gonna be offshore somewhere ... meanwhile back on the mainland , VIC anyway ... what seemed like hundreds of people were surfin from boats .... its when you realise how rare some spots are is when you get protective .... like one really good day every 20 years .... the rest in between are like only there to prepare you for those odd days ...
anyway , the hypocracy is unfounded ... eventually W SA and then TAS will experience this nuisance .... Global warming may even hurry it up ....
why do you think people " up stumps " and move to these locales in the first place ....? its fine for long time locals to want growth , and prosperity but at what cost .... if their actions drive away the first wave of " settlers " what possibility do they have of maintaining that growth ? .... when places experience " growing pains " thats when they fall back into " tumbleweed towns " .
Anyway we are digressing , and in the long run all wanting similar things , just different approaches ...
as for keeping whoever where , i'm pretty sure cow bombie come next spring will be the most dangerous spot considering whats going down there in the last few years ... still hasn't stopped people including caml paddling & having a dig ....
the future is never easily seen from the present , so as per Brutes words we can only learn from past mistakes .......

Hey southey , wat dya mean about cow bommie and being dangerous ? & you said wats been going down the last few yrs ? Cows nowdays isnt the hyped up tow wave it used to be . Other more slabby waves are the more popular spots

caml they talk of the aquatic animals that are out at pedra .... but considering the shark issues over west in the last few years , and that generally if you actually paddle out there ....
I'm sure there are waves in tassie that actually make this look small .... but even towing them would be gnarly . If you consider the swell direction and where this wave is located then we haven't seen the ceiling .... maybe never will unless someone designs a better hydro foil board that is less dangerous to ride

ok Caml,
I've not tried to pin point MC or yourself,
however i probably have. I may be looking through different coloured glasses.
I apologise if you feel this way,You wrote "shouldn't you be warring against exposure mate"? you missed the whole point Caml
my only "warring" against exposure was when guys like MC and yourself GET TOGETHER with the NO EXPOSURE and NO CONTEST and kiss their arses, but in actual fact you guys are THE EXPOSURE! thats the point!!!

You say I'm off the mark. What's your stance then on No Exposure, No Contest etc?
I'm not saying i'm right, I have tried to express my feelings as to why i thought yourself and MC were hypocritica through "my eyes", and back up my reasons.

On most occasions both of you just refuse to comment or justify your actions.
MC was a strong advocate for No contest No exposure, but is happy to associate himself on here with you, The man who has numerous Photo entries in an Australian/NewZealand magazine and website contest of the location he is strongly protecting!
Also he helped RCJ and Stormsurfers promote and expose numerous areas outside of his own(an apology was accepted) even after he realised his initial exposure of the west Victorian coast was wrong and he'd (apparently) learned from past wrong doings.
And most people were happy for the no contest debate when they were bagging the pro-contest movement. But none like to see me go on with the debate when I'm calling out those above! too many arse kissers
please explain

s-l - You're not sounding like any Tasmanian to me... and I communicate with many, many of them on a regular basis.....you're sounding more like an out of kilter agitator with a personal agenda.........and this is my one and only response given the inevitable reaction that will occur....(i.e. no more oxygen or attention will be afforded)

TMFU
I went up to PC one time
No Cameras
Got hassled by the NoExposure crew circa 2004
Came across MC at home, cameras everywhere, production crew!

you just keep defending them mate,
another arse kisser obviously

they cannot justify their own actions

the general surf public bow down to them
theyre just as media hungry as the rest of them,
but theyre soul surfers!

Get over it s l .
You reacted badly to someone wording you up on how things roll in those parts .
Actions speak louder than words . So unless you were roughed up , the exact same words may not have sounded as bad as if they had of come from a person you knew , who introduced you to an area . I've had many warnings similar but from friends , remi ding me of the rules . When you travel alone expect to be spoken to , but unless there is physical threat then you just do the right thing listen and continue doing what ya love .
What is it with people these days gettin all soft when voices are raised .
Again quietly taking it in then , letting your actions in the ocean account for themselves .

Hey s-l,I understand where you are coming from.......but I think with more surfers and comps such as the Big wave awards....and having seen what potential monetary awards and sponsorship await a surfer IF they can be the first to expose/ride a new area..

Garrett Mc Namarra......Laird,etc....not sure where you saw me with a film crew.......as the last film I did was Teddy bears PicNic 15+ years ago.....

what looks like hypocrisy today is actually an evolving thought pattern that keeps taking on board all the consequences of past actions..

so what weer the consequences of "a day in the life of WL," and Stormriders and Teddy bears picnic???

hey and Caml ain't no new friend...its been 15 years since I lived in MR....

I'm hearing what you're saying MC and understand the "evolving pattern that keeps taking on board all the consequences of past actions"

I thought you were part of the crew when RCJ came to shipsterns with TRay and won 20grand towing medium shipsterns.
My apologies if i am wrong!

i do not understand your first paragraph last post, was that a quote or half a question ?

and MC, how can you in one stance, say no contest.
but support guys like MM who only last year did specific fly in photo shoots in the same location, not to mention talk openly on this forum about him and Caml who both submit photo's of this wave?
I'm just trying to see your point on the above question and understand why you so strongly argue the contest (i understand), but you can tolerate this?

it's been a while since i saw aditLoWL
and I'm keen to see the documentary on his life! i heard it's a must watch!
I hear the boys here involved had a bad taste left in their mouths both times the stormsurfers were down.

why haven't you towed the line in west SA with the photos caml?

sl you have changed sides many times on these threads ,from the moment that i first noticed your comments on the exposure and bwwt threads . you are one of only two people who heckle me on the forums ,along with uplift (at times) but im not here to do that sort of name calling sledging type stuff. but i must say that i do enjoy debating with you a bit , some of the shit youve said but ,about me like you know stuff about me ? youve heard rumours , so have i ,absurd stories ! im a prime target for crazy stories ,heard some far fetched ones myself . ,it actually seemed like you would write trash about me at one stage. now saying how i put my hand out wanting money for my surfing ? thats so stupid, like do you reckon that about kelly or any athlete ? do you know my history ? do you know what its like to be a surf bum ,no income ,a vagrant, hassled by police, society in general, cos youve no proffesion, living in a car in surf spot carparks or in the scrub hiding . had no money to buy equipment to surf? moved on by rangers or police? targetted by police, busted repeatedly, car searched, crumbs !fines, courts, lawyers, fined by cops and rangers over and over ? have you ever eaten food from bins daily? i cant even write here why i decided i wanted to win the bwa ( that story is too valuable to be revealed now), there is a very real reason why , but yes it was for money .what do you do for money mr sl? already wrote about my stance on contests at my local breaks . it wasnt me who was trying to stop the bwwt event , really what are you on about ? i have my own opinions on comps and no i dont worry about stopping them.doesnt mean i like them. you are the only person saying where the waves are that i entered into the bwa comp remember not me . im not planning to expose waves in future, sometimes you have to do things to survive , and i will be doing my best to care for the environment and preserve it . my carbon footprint is lesser than most, and has been for my whole life . any questions ?

nah, wasn't in on the 20K win........but I Know the adventure they had 3 on a Ski coming from the other direction...the froth was on to see if Shippies could handle 30' +......

My support of MM's is I make a lot of his bds,he's a customer and a friend.......he is also seeing both sides of the story now....with consequences in exposing spots where there is a local presence that doesn't want exposure...

my point with a couple of the films done with Wl and myself on a minor level...was that in that era people didn't know where the surf was......I think its way more sensitive now....that even 5 years ago....

have no real interest in going to SA...as quite fine here....enough size and waves....

Caml,
I mow down tall timber for a living. I don't like that fact.
I was not educated well. I surfed instead of going to school many days.
I eat up carbon. I don't like that fact.
I made excuses it was the only thing i could do to earn good money for my family. I thought it was better than leaving for the northWest mining money.
I thought i'd keep doing it getting my kids through uni, give them a future.
I am responsible for helping destroy the forrests, my grandkids future!
I pay my taxes. taxes that go towards building this country.
building roads and infrastructure. Your unemployment benifits. The cops and rangers that hassle you. The public services you use.
I feel guilty my only skill is in a fucked up industry killing this planet.
i may be frustrated and taking my personal issues on you.
we all have a past, right now we can only control what we do with our future.
some people surf their whole lives.
I've worked all my adult life. Weekend warrior with only a handful of midweek surfs throughout the year.
time to go get some. end of the year i'm pulling up stumps.
get some of those tax dollars i paid, before i'm too old to enjoy em.
52 and no excuse.
no need for photo's.
i got my kids and a grandchild on the way.
way more rewarding than looking at myself standing on a surfboard.
hope you keep true to yourself.
always loved the stories i've heard about you.
just didn't understand why all of a sudden you want to be part of the exposure crew. Also saw it as hypocritical to the stance i thought you had on the BWWT comp. still do!.
each to their own.
out.

s-l,living in contradiction to your own sense of moralaity, can be a very destabilizing thought and work pattern....

I suffer the same making toxic s/bds and watching a changing world where we sometimes feel like ol relics from another era....and the impact that mobiles/social media have had......seems if ya just tell the truth..about when you were wrong and what you don't understand.......
it all becomes clearer.....sounds like you are a proud family man...enough said....

Your already hurting us enough by cutting off our oxygen supply and i need that to surf big waves . We both are using a local recource to make money . S l , and can admit wat i did is hippocritical . But i actually put back into the surfing community . Provide a service forecasting waves, for friends for aust &, indo ,watever surfing equip, wax suncreme leggys fins strings keys tide chart board repair travel tips for campers . Sharing info to surround myself with surfers and carpark crew cos we a tribe .sure theres the negative detrimental effects of there bein some pictures of me surfing becos it makes people want to surf a shark pit wave kms out to sea . Theres more positives though . Theres also lots of other things for ppl to see on the internet , millions of distractions . have never used a camera if i did i would have some of best footage ever collected . Far different than the hype of a contest . infrastructure news coverage tourist promotion etc . Big factor is it was different in the past to wats happening now . Way more cameras social media so theres zillions of other choices for surfers they most probly froth for an easier destination . Like to share waves anyways when im surfing alone and some crew come out especially . Rather have frends than all the waves for myself .
