Billy Kemper wins Jaws Challenge for the third time

PEA‘HI, Maui/ Hawaii (Tuesday, November 27, 2018) - Today, Maui's own Billy Kemper (HAW) won the Jaws Challenge at Pe‘ahi, one of three stops on the World Surf League (WSL) Men's Big Wave Tour (BWT), for the third time in his career. Competition resumed with Round 1 Heat 2 after being called off yesterday and Kemper picked up where he left off to set today's tone with more exhilarating performances as he battled back and forth with Kai Lenny (HAW) in the Final.

"Yesterday was probably the most radical day of surfing competition and I'm glad I got to kick that day off and got to end this event," Kemper said. "This is for my mom and if you're looking down on me right now mom, this one's for you. There's so much behind the calm, collective, and seriousness. Less than a month and a half ago I was sitting in Los Angeles getting MRIs wondering if I'd be able to surf this winter. I tore my labrum, my abductor in my hip and I'd been training for four months straight with Kahea Hart and my nutritionists.

Kemper is one of the most dedicated big wave athletes on the BWT and trains seven days a week both in and out of the water. His focus includes nutrition, heart health, mental training and physical aptitude.

"I put everything into this year and I was second guessing if I'd be able to surf again by the end of the year," Kemper continued. "My team got me back here and this is for us. I didn't do this on my own. My beautiful wife, my children, I love you guys so much."

Billy Kemper

This marks a career-defining win for Kemper, his third BWT win on home turf, and continues to show he is the one to beat at Jaws. Kemper's ability to hunt down some of the heaviest waves and attack the barrels on offer separated him from the rest of the competition -- claiming the victory with a brilliant 23.84 (out of a possible 30) heat total.

"Every one one of my sponsors, you supported me," Kemper added. "I had no sponsor a few years ago and I was a wildcard in this event. I won it and I told myself I was never going to stop winning it until I'm done competing. That's my goal every time I surf out here in a heat, my goal is first and only first. I put blood, sweat and tears into this and this is my pride and joy. I'm so thankful for all the fans who supported this event and all of us athletes, we're not just surfers, this is our livelihood."

Kemper now heads back to Oahu to continue his big wave brilliance and compete in Day 2 of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, which saw the largest swell of the season hit the North Shore over the past two days. Contest organizers called stop No. 2 of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing off yesterday and today due to unruly XXL conditions at Sunset, which gave Kemper the opportunity to compete in the Jaws Challenge at Pe'ahi and bring home another trophy.

Jaws turned on for an exciting start to kick off the Final with nearly all six competitors getting a wave. Lenny's barrel stole the show of the first exchange, garnering an excellent 8.33 -- a 16.66 (out of a possible 20) when doubled as his best score -- with the youngest competitor among them, Maui's Tyler Larronde (HAW) right behind him accruing an 8.03.

But, Kemper took off deep and lined up for a barrel of his own, beating a heavy section and nearly riding out on his feet before the whitewater swept him as he exited. He earned a 7.70 for the ride, however Lenny wasn't done and showed his control on a highline turn that put him back in the lead with a 6.90. Kemper's apt for the barrel locked him in one last opportunity and he expertly navigated two sections before flying out once more, this time without his board, albeit judges awarded the wave an excellent 8.07 and the ultimate victory.

Kai Lenny

The remaining 25-minutes witnessed a few more scoring opportunities from Albee Layer (HAW) andGrant Baker (ZAF), but neither found the points needed to overtake the top spot -- finishing third and fourth, respectively. Koa Rothman (HAW) couldn't get into rhythm after his heavy wipeout to start the heat and ended with a sixth-place finish.

One of the day's standout performers, Larronde, missed out on the Jaws Challenge last season, but earned redemption today with a third-place finish after starting the morning off with a horrific wipeout. The young Maui-competitor won a stacked Round 1 Heat 4 bout that included World Champion Greg Long (USA), one of Big Wave's fiercest competitors and defending Jaws Challenge winner Ian Walsh (HAW), alongside chargers Jamie Mitchell (AUS) and Francisco Porcella (ITA). He carried that momentum into a last-minute Final spot after going from fourth to third-place in his Semifinal heat, eliminating Long, Walsh, and Aaron Gold (HAW).

"I just had to go on that wave in my first heat, in a freesurf I probably wouldn't have went, but I just sent it and went and yeah, it wasn't the right one," Larronde said. "The wind caught my board and I just flew down to the bottom, slammed on my back, and all the air got sucked out of me. I was seeing stars, but I handled it and started coughing up some blood when I got back out. I'm so excited and surfing this ‘Maui glass,' it's what we grew up surfing, and it's kind of paying off."

Kemper joins Keala Kennelly (HAW) as 2018 event champions after Kennelly's first-ever BWT win yesterday in incredible 30-to-50 foot conditions. The women charged fearlessly and tackled death-defying drops and horrific wipeouts to take center stage and crown Kennelly after a sensational showdown. The 40-year-old's bravery led the charge as she and fellow competitors pushed the envelope for big wave surfing. The Hawaii-competitor didn't back down in either her Semifinal or Final heats, keeping Andrea Moller (BRA), Emily Erickson (HAW), and reigning BWT World Champion Paige Alms (HAW) at bay.

Shame it's cropped for IG. Reckon the wide shot of that will be amazing.

The photo looks amazing and yes really big wave, but it's taken from high up (drone or chopper) and cropped at a slight angle giving the appearance of a much larger wave. We're seeing more lip because we can see more of the back of the wave looking down on it. He is bottom turning almost on flat water so where he is, is actually the bottom of the wave of not far off it. Still would't see me near anything like it and he was charging some crazy ones which were massive.

Yeah, I don’t reckon there would have been much padding going on that arvo. Amazing how a wave that size can hold its shape.

What's everyone's opinion on Billy winning with two incomplete waves as opposed to two completed rides for Kai?
Even though they were incredible waves it doesn't seem right to me.

At the time I didn't even think about it, but now as time goes on and there is some space to reflect in, it does seem really weird.

Kai Lenny won hands down in the amazing tow session after the contest. That will be what is remembered from the day.

I am amazed that there is little footage of Kai's 20 waves , with out a doubt he broke thru a new big wave barrier , and showed the world the next frontier of surfing , ripping waves to shreds , where paddle surfers cannot go....one of the finest surfing sessions i have ever witnessed!

Most impressive bit for me was Albee Layer surfing an 8'4" when everyone else was on 10+'.
His strategy was to go deeper inside and take off later. He paddled out on the big day just when it was cancelled and the skis began to ride, tried same thing. You could see the board work too, a looseness midway between the big guns and the tow boards (which Kai just redefined surfing with). Layer copped a few on the head for his positioning, which I can't begin to imagine what that is like.

Oh yeah, who was the other bloke out with Kai, with fluoro green on wettie/board as the tow session wound down? He got some massive ones and remained anonymous.

Carlos Burle was the natural, Chumbo the goofy.

EDIT: Haroldo Ambrosio was also out there, another natural, he rode the same board as Burle. Similar wetsuit colour too.

I can't imagine the headspace you'd have to be in to commit while seeing that ledge growing underneath you, knowing that just getting down a 40ft wave won't be enough, you'll also have to handle the freefall acceleration and the landing while piloting a 10 foot board. And then once done, swing it and pull in to a four-storey barrel.

It's way out there on the rarely traversed tips of bravery and athleticism.

And Twiggy ain't a young bloke either, channeling his angst and anger through reckless acts, he's middle-aged for chrissakes! Got a wife and kids to think about.

Had a surf in 5ft sucky hollow waves in a strong offshore wind today, and because of the wind you had to concentrate on keeping the nose down and making the take off, as I was out there I was trying to get my head around twiggys drop. My mate and I were talking about it in between waves. It’s just so fucking incredible. Amazing surfing

Was kai the only one towing after the comp? I thought any number of teams would a been all over it.

The other squad was Carlos Burle, Chumbo, and Haroldo Ambrosio. Kai also towed 14-year old Ty Simpson-Kane into one.

Everyone else was caught out. I mean, who'd think a big wave comp would be called off? Fortunately for Kai he had his boat out there and he had the foresight to take his tow board, kite, foil etc. Perhaps because he tow surfed after the comp finished in 2016.

No-one else could get their tow boards cos once it was called off all the boats in the channel headed to the ramp and turned it into a traffic jam.
