Been some great news around our house with the downfall of skinflint celebrity chef George Calombaris. Before my wife and I hooked up she was dating the chubby pie eater, meaning every single time I serve up my thrice-weekly bean burritos I'm forced to endure dramatic eye rolls and a sermon about how her life could've turned out so much differently. You better believe I took great joy forcing her to sit through Georgie's PR-scripted mea culpa with Leigh Sales, all the while comparing my generosity, how I give loose coin to buskers, wave when merging in traffic etc, while ol' pudding face squirmed away on screen.

Went to optometrist seeing floaters and black horizon.
Detached retina surgery that arvo (age related 1 in 10,000 odds)
This 11 weeks ago vitreous fluid sucked out, then laser, then gas bubble installed to push retina back into place (fully conscious but I was OK the anaesthetist, she held my hand) then life seen (not) through a bubble.
No psychical activity no driving nothing, nada, ficken torture.
My good news yesterday bubble finally went absorbed as vitreous fluid returns, today 1st surf still blind in the eye and I totally sucked but man it was good.
A result from the gas bubble is a cataract will require surgery within 6 months and then I find out where the sight ends up all good.
The technology is amazing, we really are lucky to live in this age.

I love this shit. That’s a freshly waxed , virgin surfboard at the start of a great day’s waves. Turned out to be one of the best boards I’ve ever ridden.

Sadly , these days it’s a bruised , battered and broken remnant of its previous glory . Multiple incursions onto exposed reef and being subject to the destructive power of a vicious Dirk Hartog Island mini tornado will do that to even the most responsive super stick.
Still mentally debating whether to get it recreated or strike out into uncharted territory .
I miss it , but still see room for incremental improvement.
Seeing as this is a good news thread, I'll tell you what I think is good news.
Last week on a couple of slow surf days a mate and I took kayaks and camping gear and headed up into the bush south west of Grafton for a leisurely 22km paddle down the Nymboida River.
Even though the water level was low, the paddle was magic, just drifting down the river in the middle of nowhere, with a couple of little rapids to keep things interesting.
But the real bonus was the freedom - free camping, no permits required for the 4WDing or the paddling, no one to police you or give you a hard time.
The Most Over-Regulated Country In The World still has its moments.
The good news is that Brian knows where his gaoler lives and one fine day he won’t just escape , he’ll escape and end that bastard.

Went around to a mate's house on Saturday night for a few drinks and a barbie, and my mate, who's a keen woodworker, pointed out a tree in his backyard. "It's a Red Cedar," he said with barely concealed pride.
Red Cedar have a long history in the Illawarra as they were the first industry here. From Stanwell Park to Kiama the escarpment was abounding with large Red Cedar, the wood from which is easy to work with, has a deep red colour, and most importantly, doesn't rot.
Because of this, timber getters raided the Illawarra Escarpment and shipped it north to build ye olde Sydney Town. The wood was known as 'Red Gold'. So rapacious was the appetite for Red Gold that in 40 years the timber getters stripped the escarpment of Red Cedar. The industry collapsed and many of the timber getters moved to the Northern Rivers to do the same up there.
Very few Red Cedar remain and more recent efforts to regrow the tree have been hampered; it's slow growing and also, for reasons unknown, many specimens didn't take.
The Red Cedar in my mate's yard looked awfully familiar, so yesterday I took a closer look at the biggest tree on our block. It grows right next to the deck, sits to the north of the house, towers over it so we get shade in summer and sun in winter. I had no idea what type of tree it was, but because it was deciduous I figured it was an introduced species.
Turns out Red Cedar - toona ciliata for those inclined - is one of Australia's few deciduous trees. And it also turns out the tree in our yard is a scarce specimen of Red Cedar. Always liked that tree, now even more.
Many years ago I bought a coupla trays of Toona Australis seedlings from Terania Creek nursery ( I think, it's a long time ago ) and planted them on our 5 acre property ( Kangarilla SA ) and shared some with a mate. All my trees grew on a steep hill side but Bob's was on prime flat land one of them absolutely boomed. Found out later he buried his large Doberman underneath it and he attributed that to its excellent health. I was a self employed cabinet maker for a long time and Red Cedar was the shit back then ( 80's and 90's ).
karching!......mate was suspicious of a log that got washed up on the rocks at speeds reef ballina years ago.Had a guy come check it out and sure enough it was red cedar,they took it away and i think my mate scored 3000 grand for the phone call.....so whats your address again Stu?

The value of red cedar is responsible for one of the best waves in Australia.
On trees with our next house we hope to either get a house with some old established trees in the garden or some land with established trees. You can’t buy that time it takes for a tree to mature.

This next month is one of the best times of the year, though for a different reason than, say, late autumn (abundant swell) or late December (holidays and sun). It's all about the early mornings right now. Approaching the spring equinox the days are lengthening at their fastest rate, over two minutes longer every single day, so each week the alarm clock has to be set ten minutes earlier if you want to surf at first light.
All this means the rate of attrition among the morning crew is at its highest.
The morning sessions are the least crowded of the year and if a proper swell comes between now and October 6 - when daylight savings starts - it's a blessing for the insomniacs who find no issue with setting the alarm to four-something to go surfing. Last year we had a point swell the week before DS began and for three days it was single digit crowds for the better part of an hour.
This week's been pretty damn good too. Beachbreaks only, but clean, largely unattended, with an Instagram sunrise each morning.

although I don't see any diminishment of the dawn patrol crew here: the most reliable crowd.
There's a fixed dawny crew at the point, five or six guys who are there before the first ray of sun, every swell, every month, every year. I can peg them by arrival time, so Pearso's car is ALWAYS in the first car space, and it goes along from there. On the beach there's really just me and another fella who can be counted on for year-round dawnys.
Other crew come and go, maybe they get up early one day then you don't see them for a few weeks, or there's a van full of backpackers who get woken up by the banter and come out earlier than they expected.
But that core group is as reliable as the sunrise that follows them. Thank fuck it's only a small group and they're all champion fellas (EDIT: and one lady too!)
And while I'm feeling a surge of goodwill towards my ante meridiem brothers...
Bloke around here organises a loose gathering of surfers to get together and chat every few weeks. It's a little bit Men's Shed...yeah, yeah...though I'd say it's closer to beers and plain talk than any kind of movement.
Few months back we were chatting about the various pecking orders at the point and someone mentioned the staunch early morning crew, about how good it is to rock up in the dark and see the same faces, have those familiar conversations.
Fella sitting next to me, who comes from overseas but moved to the area about twenty years back, said about becoming part of the dawny crew, "Changed my life it did."
Wasn't a grand statement, he almost said it under his breath, but the sentiment was unmistakable. I realised then, if I didn't already know, how valuable those casual relationships are.
Setting the alarm to 4:30am is nothing unusual for Queenslanders. It's why our curtains fade faster.
Surfed a protected pointbreak a few hundred kms from home yesterday arvo. Was in the area due to work and once that was done I went chasing waves. The southerly, however, limited my options.
Ended up at the aforementioned pointbreak which was four feet and, though bouncy and backwashy, broke for about 50 metres along an irrgeular rockshelf.
Sounds good right? This is the thread for it, relaying news of good sessions etc..
Unfortunately there were 25 - 30 guys out, all of them apparently locals going on their ability to jockey for the wobbly takeoff while positioned hard up against the rocks. Not just close to the rocks, but right fucken up against them. They could scratch their armpits with the cunjevoi, and this is with lines of overhead swell bouncing around the lineup, each wave washing them a few feet this way and that.
With light fading the work utes would rock up, and quickly afterwards their occupants would run out, jump, and then sit on the inside, picking one up almost straight away.
Me, I floundered and bobbed and paddled for waves that didn't break. Every time a proper wave came there was either already someone on my inside, or someone would materialise there. Buckling down I sat right on the fucken rock and waited, but before a set came a fella shoehorned himself between me and the (dry) rock. Took the next wave that broke.
So I drifted down the line and picked up scraps. Caught a wave to shore and walked back to my car.
Hard to be angry. Really, what had just happened goes on at my local every time it breaks, only this time the roles were reversed. Guess it's good to see things from the other side every now and again.
Besides, I reasoned to myself, at least my local wave is worth hassling for.

Hard to be down on crew owning their shit wave if it’s good enough to draw your own attention even if it’s only for an arvo ,cause you know that when you leave youll be immediately replaced with another one-day wonder blow-in.
It’s nice to be able to look down your nose at their misplaced allegiances , whilst they’re pissing themselves on the days their local rivals anywhere on the planet.
Well, maybe not anywhere on the planet, but it probably feels that way when they’ve slogged through 348 days of sectiony garbage and now they’ve got local privilege on a clean wall to the beach.
