Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

All right tune junkies, here’s a game to play.
Bands who reference themselves in a tune. I’ll start.

I was thinking the Monkees too LD.

Only other one i' can think of is Icehouse 'Icehouse' and the only reason for that is it's probably the second or third album I ever bought.

Choosing this one over "they call us Run DMC" as just a better song with a video clip.

@Blackers

What about bands that reference themselves in an album title? For instance...

Out of the Shadows
Dance with the Shadows
The Sound of the Shadows
Shadow Music
Compact Shadows
Moonlight Shadows
Simply...Shadows
Steppin' to the Shadows

No points for guessing which band made those albums.

It would certainly make a longer list Stu, including the Scientists (too many beers in to proof read).
That Ramones song popped up on my player coming back from the surf yesterday and got me wondering how many have actually done something similar. As Indo said above plenty of self references in hip hop et al but seemingly less so in other genres. Your Minutemen reference was more what I was looking for.

What about songs that reference other bands or other bands albums.

here's one

"Out on tour with Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids
I, they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean
And I could really give a fuck
Stone Temple Pilots, they're elegant bachelors
They're foxy to me, are they foxy to you?
I will agree they deserve absolutely nothin'
Nothin' more than me"

Don't think they made many friends with those lyrics either

And another.

With heaps of other band references

Started back in '83
Started seeing things differently.
And hardcore wasn't doing it for me,
No More.
Started smoking pot.
Thought things sounded better slow.
Much slower and heavier.
Black magic melody to sink this poser's soul. VU, Stooges, undeniably cool.
Took a lesson from that drone rock school
Manipulate musicians, hack righteous drool.
Getting loose with the Pussy Galore.
Cracking jokes like Thurston Moore.
Pedal-hopping like a Dinosaur, J.
Rock n' Roll genius, ride the middle of the road.
Milk that sound, blow your load.
Soon it's further than you ever said it go.
Four stars in the Rolling Stone. Oh, sludge rock... hard-ass, harsh.
Just Gimme Indie Rock!
It's gotta be!
C'mon Indie Rock.
Just Gimme Indie Rock. Taking inspiration from Hüsker Dü
It's a new generation of electric white boy blues
C'mon Indie Rock.
It's gone big
C'mon Indie Rock.
Just Gimme Indie Rock. Breaking down the barriers,
like Sonic Youth.
They got what they wanted.
Maybe I can get what I want too.
C'mon Indie Rock.
It's gotta be!
C'mon Indie Rock.
Just Gimme Indie Rock. Time to knock,
The hard rock on it's side.
Time to knock,
The shit rock off it's throne.
Time to amaze,
With some indie sludge.
Grunge!

No Satisfaction, Sky Pilot, Sky Saxon.
That's what I like.

Better get off my cloud 'cause two's a crowd,

Let's all turn on!

Cheers really enjoyed that.

Mates older brother had the record, we would listen to it quite a lot, along with lots of heavy metal.
Interesting how the album had various incarnations, from classic album to haunting movie soundtrack to Olympic games opening ceremony song.

Okay ive just about run out of gig stories, but have at least one left, i will probably regret telling this one, i only told one mate this story a few days later and swore him not to tell anyone else, but it happened in Feb 2001 so it's now one he or i bring up around a fire with mates and beers.

Anyway im a big Kyuss fan and got into Queens of the stone age from the first spilt Kyuss/Queens of the stone age EP, so when they announced their first Australian tour for their second album Rated R album i was pretty stoked.

I was living on the Goldie but back down Vic for a summer, my mates up the Goldie were already into them but down here the boys hadn't really got into them yet and it was always hard to get them off the rock(Phillip island) and down to the city for gigs, so it was a solo mission.

So i ventured off in my old XE Ford Falcon panel van (worst car i ever bought) i remember the drive in just super amped just hanging for that first beer and was going in pretty early.

Anyway im getting pretty close driving down what was then the SE arterial ( freeway going into the city) when i really needed to go to the toilet a number two, but you aren't even suppose to stop on the freeway and there wasn't really any decent spots to actually do my business, so i thought i better turn of the next exit and find a service station.

Anyway i was getting desperate and really just holding on if i didnt get to a toilet soon i was literally going to shit myself, i remember the feeling so well it was all that mattered, and i was thinking do i just pull up and do it by my car on the side of the road?

Anyway i managed to hold on and i turned off the next exit but couldn't find any servos or any public toilets or anything just houses, i turned down a side street that looked promising and spotted a school (it was obviously out of school hours)

I literally ran into the school grounds trying to find some privacy, i was in full on turtle mode and dropped my pants in this garden, and i dont know what happened but i basically crapped all over my jeans.

It was horrible I was relived but also in a spot of bother basically frozen thinking what the fuck do i do, i need to wipe my arse and clean this mess up, but my jeans were a mess crap literally everywhere.

So im standing there in shock pants down around my ankles shit everywhere, and to make it worse two fitness type guys run past on the path only two metres away from me the looks on their faces was one of horror, disgust, fear and disbelief.

Anyway i didnt have much choice but to just try to clean the crap off my arse and pants and there wasnt much in the way of suitable foliage.

So i had to sacrifice my jocks that were also soiled, and i did my best to clean myself and my jeans, but wiping crap off your jeans only works to a certain degree and it sure doesnt get rid of the smell.

Anyway lucky i had towels and stuff in the car so i kept my jeans on but put a towel on the seat, and i went looking for a shop to buy some new pants, but i didnt even know if the shops were still open (the alternative idea was to raid a vinies bin), anyway i found a shopping centre and it was pretty much closing as i walked through the doors of i think it was Myers, i had no time at all so i just grabbed any pants in a size that seemed right, and got some pants that were not my style and way to big.

Anyway by this time the carpark was pretty empty and i found a tap and i took my pants off again and gave myself a good clean with water and dried myself with a towel or rag and those soiled pants, they got wrapped up in plastic bags and stuffed out of the way.

So i was now clean and had some new pants with my belt holding them up, no jocks but hey that wasnt a biggy.

Anyway i got to the pub early (Prince of wales hotel) and just like Dan suggest i got on the beers and it was a great night, Magic Dirt played first and played the best set only their early heavier stuff (lots from friends in danger era) and QOTSA were also really good, and i feel really lucky to have seen them in a pub and not some stadium like the play these days.

Anyway they kind of lost me after their next few albums once Nick got kicked out, but those first three albums are classics and this song one of their best, not the early line-up but still a absolutely perfect performance....loking at the set list, they didst actually play this one though.

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Sunday, 14 Feb 2021 at 11:20pm

ha ha no, wasn't even a thought.

Technically by that point i was as clean as you can get without soap, i basically washed my self in the carpark and i had a spare T-shirt (a band Tee) and the new pants, but i do remember still feeling dirty and paranoid i might smell so it tied keeping my distance from people where i could.

Actually the crazy night didn't end there, i tried to make it to the Tote another pub to catch a friends band, but they had already finished, so they were at the bar drinking, then it shut so they bought a slab and were walking back their place but I'm not sure what happened i must have been to drunk and had a rest as i never made it to their place and woke up in someones front garden bed with half their slab, so i went back to my car and slept in the back.

Then i woke up sun blazing in, ticket on my windscreen and cars everywhere, and id parked in one of those spots on busy roads where after a certain time you can't park and it becomes a lane of the road.

I guess i had other things on my mind when parking :D

Cool story, bro.

⊙﹏⊙

Fucking hell.

Anyway, on a tenuous faeces-related note, I saw old mate Nick Oliveri at my local pub mid-week a few years ago playing an acoustic set of covers. One of which was some GG Allin.

Sheeeeeeit.

He wasn't nude, but.

Saw him with The Dwarves too. Mate's band was support so we got in on the lock-in after.

He's a good egg.

But...?

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Monday, 15 Feb 2021 at 8:52pm

I do like what Nick brought to QOTSA i think he brought an important edge that made them a much better band when he was with them, and he is a great musician and I do like some of the other stuff he's been involved with like Mondo Generator and he dies seem cool in Interviews no bullshit kinda guy.

But "Good egg" is probably not the best description as Josh kicked him out of QOTSA because he beat up his girlfriend more than once i believe, so sadly he does have a very dark side to him as a person that is hard to overlook, hopefully he has changed in that area as was years ago, but no idea.
