No Focus ,BB is not right.

I confirmed with my gay brother this morning whether he or any of his mates considered the phrase “ You can suck my dick “ a gay slur.

His response?

Of course not . Gay people are neither mentioned nor disparaged. You know what else he said ?

“ Tell this fella that he can suck MY dick too”. ......classic .

Blind boy doesn’t have any authority to speak on behalf of homosexuals, he’s just a self righteous muppet. And it’s also illegal to use a carriage service to “ defame , libel or vilify “ , so maybe ease up on the false accusations, BB. Or you might find yourself locked up in stir with some sexually aggressive homosexuals.

It must be a terrible burden for your brother being spokesman for the entire gay community. So yeh sue me mate, do your worst. It would be hilarious listening to your case. " Your honour he disagreed with me on the Internet and after I used a variety of sexual insults he inferred that I was a homophobic red neck dick. "

Really great to hear that the rest of you are so in touch with the gay community. No doubt you will all be at Mardi Gras. Maybe we should catch up.

Yeah mate, Mardi Gras, Tropical Fruits - had a great chat with the president and also the co-founder of Dykes on Bikes at Fruits at the end of last year.
By the way BB, there's that lack of awareness again. Do you realise that you're trying to dictate a blanket use of language regardless of context?
You know, speaking for everyone?

Seriously, you used the word fascist before; look at the definition and see how it applies to your way of thinking.

So a gay guy can’t say what’s offensive to homosexuals but you can , BB. Interesting.

PS Maybe ease up on the rednecks , BB. Rednecks being a poor minority which has traditionally been oppressed by the privileged society of which you’re a member. Generational trauma and disenfranchisement has rendered them vulnerable to political manipulation. Welfare dependendcy and their over representation in the prison system signposts them as victims of the avaricious neo liberal culture .

Does it make you feel more of a man to pick on those with less opportunity, education and social mobility than yourself ? Life sure seems easy from your ivory tower , maybe spare a thought for those whose upbringings weren’t quite as cosseted as your own .

You should punch up , not down in your attacks on the various sub groups of society, BB.

I can’t believe you’d bully those poor red necks ....Have you no heart ?

Interesting choice of words there by blowin

"...Obama ended up frustrated with the Alinsky methodology due to what he saw as its lack of heart. Rule number 5 of Alinsky's Rules for Radicals is "Ridicule is a man's most potent weapon." But as reported in Lizza's piece, Obama just wasn't down with that -- he inherently understood that even the powerful were constrained by circumstances beyond their control, and sought to reach out to them through understanding..."

Funny you should say that Andy as from my perspective context seems to be a difficult concept for a lot of those who have contributed to the discussion. So yeh, let's think about context. I am quite happy to accept that the phrase is used casually and humourously in a variety of situations and that, in those contexts, it is not homophobic. In this case the phrase was clearly intended as an insult. If we analyse the nature of that insult it was the equivalent to calling me gay. Why else would I suck his dick? If you can explain to me how that is not true, that the insult was intended to have some other meaning, I would be interested to read it. To add to matters he then made reference to stuffing things up my arse, which also clearly inferred that I was gay. If an insult is based on identifying the person as gay, then it is homophobic. School kids understand this now and the use of "gay" as an insult is now much rarer.

The second context that needs to be considered is that this is a public forum. It is not a group of adults chatting privately. To talk about the gay community is one thing. My most extensive experience has been with young people who were struggling with their sexuality outside any form of gay community. Workplaces and schools are much better than they used to be but it is still a huge step for a young person to make to come out. You can make some sweeping generalisation about how it is all cool now but my direct experience is very much the opposite. Homophobia is alive, well and thriving just below the surface. The youth suicide statistics confirm my observations. So using an insult like that on a public forum is seriously unhelpful. Maybe I will be less pious and sanctimonious when the suicide risk for young gay men falls to that of the wider community. Let's hope it is soon.

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture
Blowin Saturday, 9 Feb 2019 at 2:12pm

“ If we analyse the nature of that insult it was the equivalent to calling me gay.”

Fail.

How do you come to this conclusion ? As I said previously,I’m aware you are heterosexual , the express definition of which is that you DONT WANT to suck a dick . The implication in the insult then is that sucking my dick is against your wishes and you would find the idea abhorrent.

I am suggesting you suck my dick to illustrate my power over you and desire to ridicule and subjugate you .....as is the intent of every insult since the dawn of time.

No mention of homosexuality. No casual link or implied nuance towards homosexuality at all.

It’s you drawing a massive fucking bow in order to use the pedestal of morality to stare me down . I very obviously, have no ill will whatsoever towards homosexuals, yet you ignore this in order to usurp their authority in this situation.

Heterosexual women also suck dicks , but you don t think that I’m implying that women are abhorrent, do you ?

Misuse of the term homophobia diminishes its impact and risks lessening the gravity when it is used appropriately. So you are actually doing any victimised homosexuals a disservice.

Conclusion: Youre a mummy’s boy whose hiding between the legs of the gay community because you’ve got no return.

"...If your life had been made possible, I would love you. I probably wouldn’t make you read Antonio under the stairs. I would understand that you, like so many of your generation, believe in “calling out prejudice online” and that you believe, with no other power available to you, that just talking people around and telling off your racist relatives would produce a better world.

I would, with regret, see why you might have been led to read the liberal feminism of the present, to believe that if you were just empowered enough in yourself, you could become some sort of activist entrepreneur. I would see why you would confuse the message of self-help with the message of revolution. Why not? Some people are thick enough to confuse bigotry with anti-globalisation, so I can’t blame you for telling me, along with the liberal internet, that “kindness” is the answer to a world in which 62 people hold most of its wealth.

I see, princess, that you want to believe that the world is so comfortable, you can afford not to care about any of its material concerns. Actually, that’s what I want for you, too. I want you to live in such abundance, that the only thing you worry about is reforming people’s bad morals. But, you don’t.

Roxy does. Roxy lives in that rare part of the world where they can fully believe that poverty is not caused by a lack of resources, but is the result of bigotry alone. Liberalism is the province of the comfortable. Racism and nationalism, tragically, have become the territory of the poor. If you were here with me, I would do my best to explore with you a different way of living for us all.

If we do, they will say that we are Bernie Bros and that we hate our own gender. They will call us Corbynistas. They will say that our dislike for this age of financialisation into which you were never born is the same thing as racism. But, hey, it’s not nearly as bad to be called a racist as it is to be subject to racism, so cop it on the chin. And guard against the racism that is the scourge of our culture, and fight for a departure with the colonial past, now expressed as globalisation, that has long been racism’s most efficient partner. And when they tell us that our ideas are old and impractical, we will remind them that liberalism, even older, hasn’t really turned out so well.

And we will promise never again to write sappy letters to our imaginary daughters. That shit is for liberal wimps.

Mummy"

It's the death of a warped version of liberalism you guys are struggling with, the horse was flogged near death.

BB as I've said a few times, I'm with you on your ideals but I think a bit of nuance never goes astray.
And I'm extremely wary of people being constantly poised to take someone down for not talking or acting in the "correct" way, there's way too much of it around here (Northern NSW) for my liking, and a lot of it is backed up by self-righteous hypocrisy (as you've shown).

You've got your own beef with Blowin but my issue with you was your willingness to jump on some very non-threatening political-based jokes I made that had nothing to do with homophobia and nothing to do with intolerance.
It was mocking the morally superior (wait for it) regressive left.

Yeh there is intellectual fad at the moment to make fun of political correctness. And why not. That way you can go on being ignorant fucks without the previous guilt because well shit you know mate they're over the top now equal rights for gay whales and all that shit. And you can go on using all the sexist racist tropes that boost your tv show or web site because....... there's just too much political correctness going around. So yee hah guys go with the trend just be careful not to actually exercise your critical faculties for a second 'cos then you might just notice who benefits from this, and who's pulling the strings and shit you might even come to the shocking realisation that right now, anywhere you care to look, the lack of political correctness is what is actually doing the damage. So chat amongst yourselves for a while, there is bound to be some current fad for bashing one minority or another that you can all indulge in. Jesus Christ it feels good to get rid of the shackles of tolerance, fairness and justicess to get down on some good old filthy prejudice.

Unconscious bias and KAKs performance. And of course the media's conditioning role. The (mis) perception machine.

Step right up!!!! See it all played out on Swellnet daily!!!!

Talking about games, a few wee bits of info for the ignorant:

Scottish fitba isn't the continental or South American game, not even the English version. Especially back from my time - the 70s, 80s, hell, even now. Hard as nails. But not without skill I must say. The glorious period when Scotland used to regularly beat England! Kinda like when SA used to beat the big V for a period there in Aussie rules.

Which brings me to my AFL footy team - the Crows. Jumped on board in 96 after living in WA and being driven into it from West Coast Eagles monomania. None of us were really keen on the AFL. I was SANFL and West Adelaide all the way. Big family ties. But you accommodate. The Bloods won their first premiership for 32 years in 2015. Celebrated the last one in 83 too! Same with the Crows. Back to back 97, 98, and went to their last GF appearance in 2017. Less said, the better. But anyone who's been to the G at a grandie knows what it's like. 2019 will be a big season.

Anyway, it all boils down to chewing gum and walking at the same time. Not having all your eggs in one basket. Mixed metaphors!

I've had a boardriders club for nearly 30 years too.

But never really bought into the organised competitive part of surfing completely. Even when I did some. Don't really give a shit now. Personally and observing.

And absolutely the case for skateboarding which I did a shitload of. Organised anything didn't even enter the mind. Still trying to roll around to this day.

(as an aside, I can see professional surfing splitting like pro skating. Post-Olympics will be interesting)

Apropos of nothing, finally read Bill Finnegan's Barbarian book the other day, even though I bought a copy for my auld man when it first came out (oh yeah, he surfed till he was near 80).

The early growing up in Hawaii and the Madeira chapters were particularly interesting. I first went to Madeira in late 2001/2002. Must've just missed him. Mentions people I know. Also pg 220 in the edition I read had a cool photo of one of our original groms in the ol' boardriders. Sick photo of a good egg at cranking Kirra. Weird connections. Small world.

The book as a whole? A highlights reel, a slight feel of braggadocio, but also a sort of ennui, even sadness lurks. Hemingway like. Lite?

Takeaway. Obviously there's more to life out there than surfing, you can fit all sorts in there, but yet...but yet...
