In semi lockdown I'm finally sorting through a lifetime of photos and inspired by what Craig and Andy recently posted I thought why not.
We travel a fair bit and there has to be some crackers in the vaults.
Good if we follow the Swellnet tradition of not naming or being too obvious.

Had a little trip away on the weekend, just me and two mates, surfing by ourselves and I swam out quickly between waves to get these shots..

Haha mix of both, upwelling was stirring through in pools but mate in first took his wetty on our trip north in February, that's just crazy. Was too cold for boardies this session (well for me at least) and the next morning I reckon 16deg water!

Yeah that first picture is tiny lacerations , its a great photo as far as clarity goes and a pretty rad move heres one of shipwrecks from the late 70s. FFD6-B9-F3-27-A3-46-E7-AEDF-A542-C9549607

I love lacerations...someone told me it breaks whenever padang padang is breaking not sure how true that is. Supafreak you probably saw the boat ombak indah? i went on that boat trip twice in 98 or 99 for 2mill rp each trip...cheapest boat trip going to deserts scars and sumbawa..heard it burnt down in lombongan..you probably know the family im guessing.

@groundswell , yeah that family was Made Tomo , son of the legendary Johnny Tarzin , and yes lacerations likes west swell same as padang and deserts . Lembongan is such a strange place with swell not just tidal but direction having big impact , south swells go mainly straight down the channel and it can be frustrating seeing big lumps go past . Razors however likes the south , shipwrecks ain’t that good on south either . Ive seen lacerations same size sometimes bigger than shippies just depending on direction. Here’s an old photo of me back in the day , I’ve got plenty more but they are in photo album on lembongan. B6-D8-CA88-7841-42-B8-9899-8043-ED471-A1-F

Coming from the east coast of Oz, the coast around Durban feels pretty familiar but as you head down into the Transkei, it's something else again.

Do it Craig, revisit that Ethan Ewing/Seth Moniz vid for inspiration.

SA is pretty incredible. Can vouch for that.

One of my best mates moved to Cape Town in '93, and I visited a lot, and even worked a brief stint at Uni of CT. The country is littered with right points, snakes and sharks.

Plenty of potential on that stretch of coast in addition to what’s in that vid above.
And plus it’s a sick lifestyle over there, so loose and free, very different to Oz.

Thanks Andy M that was cool.
Hitched through the Transkei in the 90's when it was still a "homeland". Didn't score waves but a gnarly trip in many other ways.

Have been to SA 4x, including a 3 month stint, and thankfully never seen a shark in the water (there were a few on land). Surfed Nahoon for a couple of weeks not long before that double attack. From memory, I think the first guy had a traumatic amputation and exsaguinated and local shaper (?Andrew Carter) survived-really heavy.

Nice moonrise Craig, great colours in the magic hour. I got a 150mm f 2.8 macro this time last year in our long lockdown. Had to look for inspiration close to home, with those shots from around our garden. Amazing the details you can find in grevillea blooms.

Craig's picture
Craig's picture
Craig Wednesday, 25 Aug 2021 at 5:29pm

Awesome, how close can you get to the subject with the 150mm? Ie do you have to be 30cm or so away or more?

blackers's picture
blackers's picture
blackers Wednesday, 25 Aug 2021 at 5:57pm

Had to look that up! 38 cm min focus distance for 1:1 magnification, but feels closer. It gives you a little more room to move than a 90/100 mm, stops my big head getting in the way of the light. Doubles up as a nice portrait lens. Nothing wrong with a fast 50 though, I reckon that it makes you more thoughtful than when using a zoom.

blackers's picture
blackers's picture
blackers Wednesday, 25 Aug 2021 at 6:21pm

Edit to the above - closest working distance is about 20 cm from the front of the lens for the min focus setting. May explain why it feels closer than 38cm!
