I really think in this case it's roots are in an anti Judeo-Christian thing, if you see the people that are the most vocal here they are also the most anti Christian and even anti western/anti USA.
Also i think what feeds into things is just a typical leftest view that those perceived as weakest must be victims and those the strongest the oppressor's, which is why their moral compass is so out.
If 9/11 happened today, i think we would see a similar divide in how many view things and we would even see a degree of Al Qaeda & ISIS sympathy that did not happen in the past.
