Recap

The swell spiked out of the south overnight with some fun 2-3ft sets across open beaches and more size on the south magnets. Conditions have been favourable but best this afternoon with a more variable breeze.

Decent south sets this evening

This week and next (Jul 20 - 28)

The strong frontal system/low responsible for today's S'ly swell has quickly pushed north-east, away from us, but at its base, a good fetch of strong to near gale-force S/SE winds should slow the easing trend tomorrow while tending S/SE in direction.

Open beaches should still be 3ft towards northern ends, 3ft+ across the south magnets, easing through the day and then back to 2ft out of the SE-E/SE on Friday morning. Strong N/NW winds will favour northern corners tomorrow with W/SW tending S winds on Friday.

As the low moves across New Zealand, it's due to generate a healthy burst of strong to sub-gale force SE winds off the southern tip early tomorrow morning, followed by a healthy fetch of strong to gale-force E/SE winds exiting Cook Strait on early Friday morning.

This will result in a late pulse of E/SE swell Friday to 2-3ft across open beaches, easing Saturday from 2ft to possibly 3ft.

The Cook Strait fetch looks the best and should generate a good pulse of E'ly swell Sunday to 3-5ft across open beaches in the morning, easing through the day.

Winds look offshore most of Saturday ahead of possible late sea breezes, with great W/SW winds Sunday morning ahead of a S/SE change.

Easing surf with a morning offshore is due on Monday, backing off from 3ft, with nothing too significant to follow this for next week. Therefore make the most of the current swell and coming days of waves.
