Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri 14th July)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Likely tiny surf over the weekend and extending into next week with continuing strong W-NW winds
  • Small S swell pulse Tues, easing Wed
  • Possible chunky NE windswell wrap Thurs next week

Recap

Small surf yesterday with minor amounts of NE swell wrapping in today in the 1-2ft range under fresh NW winds. Today has seen similar surf, just a notch bigger with mod/fresh W-NW winds.

This weekend and next week (Jul 14 - 21)

No change to the weekend f/cast. Blocking high pressure in the Central Tasman has a ridge up the QLD Coast, while more zonal fronts bring strong NW-W winds to the Island.

Expect W-NW winds Sat tending W’ly.

Sunday sees early W’lies shift NW, again and freshen.

Not much surf on offer either day. A few traces of NE swell Sat may see some inconsistent 1-2ft energy at best. Tiny elsewhere.

Tiny surf extends into Sun with tiny levels of NE swell continuing. Desperadoes only.

High pressure slips East of Sydney on Mon, bringing more W-NW winds and small NE windswell wrap, up into the 2ft range.

Winds look to tend NW Tues as a front approaches.

We’ll see some rapid wind shifts early next week as a front races through the Tasman, bringing SW’lies Tues a’noon, likely tending variable  as a high pressure cell drifts over the Island in the wake of the front. Wave models aren’t really interested in much swell action resulting from this front but we should see some small S swell arrive Tues, in the 2-3ft range, easing Wed.

Front brings a small S swell pulse Tues

More NE windswell is on the menu likely Thurs as a front approaches and N’ly winds freshen off Southern NSW.

Another approaching low below the continent later next week is better aimed for the Southern States and likely to dissipate and be steered southwards as it approaches the Tasman Sea swell window. Only minor S swell is likely to make it around the corner.

Not much to get frothed up about, unfortunately.

Check back Mon and we’ll see if anything has changed.

Until then, have a great weekend!
