Cape Solander

Cape Solander

I've already written plenty about this session. But as I took my post-session photos with an old model iPhone and Jordan Barta was using something slightly more appropriate it's worth posting his shots also. Keen-eyed readers might notice the difference in quality.

Glorious Cape

Jeremy says that he'll be donating money "for every foot of wave I surf", which is one heck of a mission. If you'd like to help out Jeremy, check his Everyday Hero profile here.

One is a Crowd

These photos are old but they're not old news...

Way back in April, with a solid swell hitting the Sydney coast, Wylie Moyes and Luke Kennedy drove south from the Eastern Suburbs looking for waves. Timing their run well they arrived at Cape Solander after the nor-wester, which kept the lineup clear all morning, backed off to light and variable. The fellas surfed all arvo with an audience of one - photographer Charlie Straumietis. A rarity at the Cape these days.

The Cape Solander Cakewalk

Way back in ye olde days Gerry Lopez said of riding Pipeline, "It's a cakewalk when you know how" and people nodded their heads deferring to Lopez' sage-like presence all the while wondering what the fuck a cakewalk was. It's thirty years later and we still don't know.

Fright Night

Recently Mark Mathews and Richie Vaculik, two of the best out at Cape Solander, took their act to a new level with a night surf session at the southern Sydney reefbreak. With eight foot of swell draining the shelf and just one bank of lights illuminating the wave it was a hairy prospect.

Rock up to Cape Solander

Never let it be said that we run too many shots of Cape Solander, especially when the shots we do run are drama-filled sequences such as this one of Bones Dwyer.

Here, Bones has a decent crack at a beautifully shaped wave only to be swallowed by the foamball and have the wave race off ahead of him. Punishment not over, the next wave in the set picks Bones up and deposits him back onto the rock shelf, near where crew jump into the water.

The Illusion of Depth

On Sunday, with 6-8 foot of south-east swell lighting up the Sydney coast, the Storm Surfers team rolled into the Cape Solander carpark. The two leading surfers, Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones, have recently taken Maroubra surfer, Mark Matthews, under their wing. At the Cape however, the roles were clearly reversed - Matthews giving the other two a lesson in shallow-water tuberiding

Human Cannonball

The Cape Solander debrief continues... This time the evidence is presented by Aaron Hillier who stood on the rocks during the last swell to take these shots for us.

Seven Days From the Cape

This morning it's two foot in Sydney, yet last Friday Cape Solander was off the hook as a fresh east swell unloaded triple-sucking compression chambers on the shallow sandstone shelf.  Charlie Straumeitis was there to film the carnage (and occasional moments of glory).
