Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 26th June)

Best Days: Desperate surfers tomorrow morning Perth and Mandurah, Wednesday protected spots, Thursday, Friday

Recap

Great waves across Perth and Mandurah yesterday morning with a clean and easing W/SW swell from 2-3ft and 3ft respectively, while Margs was 8ft or so and a bit cleaner with an early N’ly breeze, but options limited.

Today all locations are poor with a drop in swell and onshore winds (OK in Perth and lighter N/NE early).

This weekend and next week (June 27 – Jul 3)

The swell will continue to ease through tomorrow along with strengthening NW tending N/NW winds in the South West, N tending N/NW winds further north. With the lack of size and wind affected waves in Perth and Mandurah it will only be for the desperate.

The strengthening winds will be ahead of the first in a series of strong and significant storms firing up towards us through the weekend and early next week, with each successive storm being stronger than the one before. This is due to a strong node of the Long Wave Trough sitting over us, and we’ll see increasingly large and damaging surf developing from Sunday and peaking Wednesday.

The first front on Sunday will bring a building W/SW windswell and groundswell that should reach 8-10ft into the afternoon across the South West, 4ft in Mandurah and and 3-4ft across Perth with strong NW tending W/NW winds.

A secondary strong and more elongated front pushing up and into us through the weekend will cross us Monday and see the surf increase further to 12-15ft in the South West through the afternoon, 4-6ft across Mandurah and 4-5ft in Perth with gale-force W tending W/SW winds.

The size will likely ease back a touch as we fall in between fronts and swells Tuesday morning but strong onshore W’ly winds will persist.

The final storm will be a significant low forming east of Heard Island, projecting a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds up towards us, on top an active sea state, producing an XXL long-period swell for Wednesday.

A peak is due through the day to 15-20ft in the South West, 4-5ft+ across Mandurah and 3-5ft in Mandurah. We’ll finally see conditions improve to the north of Margs as a high moves in, swinging winds S/SE while Margs will see S/SW winds, likely tending more S/SE later in the day.

Thursday looks great with a light morning offshore and oversized easing SW groundswell, smaller again Friday. Following this, the blocking high will suppress our swell window into the weekend and early the following week, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
