Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 12th August)

Best Days: Perth Saturday and Sunday, both coasts Tuesday morning

Recap

Not much to see yesterday across all coasts with onshore winds from the get go and building levels of swell. Today was much better around Perth and Mandurah with light offshore winds and 2ft sets. Margs remained onshore and smallish to 3-5ft. A new SW groundswell should kick this afternoon and reach 6-8ft across Margs late but the buoys haven't shown any real major increase yet.

This weekend and next week (Aug 13 - 19)

Stronger levels of reinforcing SW groundswell are due through the weekend, generated by a vigorous and elongated pre-frontal fetch of W/NW gales to our west-southwest.

This should produce solid sets around 8ft across the South West with 2ft+ waves around Perth, easing back slowly into Sunday.

Onshore winds will persist in the South West, moderate in strength tomorrow with fresher NW breezes Sunday.

Perth should be cleaner each day with morning E/NE offshores and weak onshores into the afternoons.

Another good pulse of more westerly swell is due Monday, generated by a more northern tracking mid-latitude low generating a pre and then post-frontal W/NW to W/SW fetch.

This swell should come in around the 8ft range again across the South West, with 2ft to possibly 3ft sets in Perth.

Onshore winds are due across all coasts though as the front generating it pushes into us with fresh NW tending SW winds.

Tuesday finally looks to see a lighter and more variable breeze around Margs tending E/NE as the swell eases back from 6-8ft and 2ft+ respectively. Perth should see nice morning offshores.

Through the day though a strengthening N/NW'ly is due to develop again as a deepening mid-latitude pushes towards us.

This low will push into us on Wednesday with a large increase in W/SW swell expected along with strong but easing SW winds.

Stormy 10-12ft surf should develop through the day Wednesday in the South West with 3-4ft waves in Perth, easing Thursday under average W/SW winds (possibly variable around Perth).

Longer term there's plenty more swell on the way with hopefully better windows of cleaner conditions but we'll review this Monday. Have a great weekend!
