Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 11th February)

Best Days: Later Saturday in the South West, Sunday morning everywhere, Monday morning exposed breaks, Wednesday morning

Recap

Easing swell with favourable winds the last couple of mornings, although this morning in the South West it was only short-lived.

This weekend (Feb 14 - 15)

Tomorrow's strong pulse of SW groundswell is still on track with the frontal system attached to this currently pushing close to the south-west of the state with it due to clip tomorrow morning.

As a result winds will be onshore from the SW tending S/SW across Margs and Perth with a morning S/SE'ly around Gero. A late swing to the S/SE is on the cards for the Margs region as the swell kicks to 6-8ft, with protected locations worth a late scope.

Sunday looks excellent as winds swing offshore from the E/SE across all locations with an easing swell from the 6ft range in the South West, 2ft+ in Perth and 4-5ft up at Gero. Therefore plan for a paddle Sunday morning before the sea breeze kicks in.

Next week onwards (Feb 16 onwards)

Monday morning looks clean and good again but much smaller and half the size of Sunday morning, best at exposed breaks across the state.

Tuesday and Wednesday's pulse of smaller, less consistent long-range SW groundswell will be generated by a strong and broad but slow moving polar low firing up around Heard Island this evening.

Core wind speeds won't really get above 40kts but the broad and slow moving nature of this low should help generate a moderate sized SW groundswell. The swell is expected to arrive later Tuesday in the South West, pulsing to 5-6ft before peaking overnight and easing from 4-6ft Wednesday morning.

Perth and Gero probably won't see any major size later Tuesday but Wednesday morning should offer inconsistent 2ft sets on the former and 3-4ft+ sets up at Gero.

Winds on Wednesday are a little too tricky at the moment as a deepening surface trough is expected to be lingering near the coast, either resulting in hot offshores or cooler onshores depending on its position. Therefore check back here Monday for an update on this.

Longer term another long-range and similar sized but slightly more consistent SW swell is due through later Thursday/Friday but we'll talk about this on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Yeah that's a classic J-Curve.

Usually occurs when the storm is travelling at a similar speed to the swell it is creating..
