Good period for swell magnets

Victoria Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 5th August)

Best Days: East of Melbourne Saturday through Tuesday, Surf Coast Wednesday afternoon and Thursday

Recap

An improvement in conditions across all coasts with light E'ly to E/NE winds and a fun swell to 3ft on the Surf Coast and 4-5ft on the Mornington Peninsula. The beaches were the pick although the Surf Coast reefs were workable at stages through the day.

This morning much cleaner conditions were seen across all spots with local offshore winds. A reinforcing W/SW groundswell has kept 3ft sets hitting the Surf Coast, and sets to 4-5ft on the Mornington Peninsula. Conditions should remain favourable all day as the swell eases and winds tend more variable.

This weekend (Aug 6 - 7)

The weekend will be all about swell magnets across the Victorian coast, with today's swell due to ease further into tomorrow, under local offshore tending variable winds.

Swell magnets on the Surf Coast may offer 1-2ft sets early, tiny into the afternoon with easing 3ft to possibly 4ft sets on the Mornington Peninsula.

Sunday will start tiny on the Surf Coast with infrequent 3ft sets on the Mornington Peninsula, but a slight kick in W/SW groundswell is due through the day.

The front generating this swell was downgraded a touch and we're only expected to see a slight kick to 3-4ft on the Mornington Peninsula, with the Surf Coast remaining tiny.

Local offshores are expected again, swinging N/NE into the mid-late afternoon.

Next week onwards (Aug 8 onwards)

Slow easing surf is due into Monday with the Surf Coast remaining tiny and the Mornington Peninsula easing from an inconsistent 3ft on the sets. Conditions will remain good though with a fresher N/NE breeze.

Tuesday should see another small inconsistent pulse of W/SW groundswell, generated by a slightly stronger but less favourably aligned frontal progression firing up behind the mid-latitude low generating Sunday's swell (in the south-east Indian Ocean).

This swell isn't likely to offer much over 2ft on the Surf Coast Tuesday morning when it peaks (if that) and 3-4ft+ on the Mornington Peninsula. Stronger N'ly winds are due to kick in, swinging N/NW later in the day as the swell eases.

For the rest of next week we've got small to moderate tricky W/SW swells on the cards generated by a splitting mid-latitude low under WA, and then the remnants of this pushing across us Wednesday.

Size wise an initial spike in long-period W/SW groundswell is due Wednesday afternoon to 2-3ft on the Surf Coast, while the Mornington Peninsula should see better 4-5ft+ sets under N/NW tending W'ly winds.
This W'ly change will be linked to the remnants of the low pushing towards and across us, generating a secondary pulse of W/SW groundswell Thursday more to 3ft and 5-6ft respectively. Winds from the western quadrant will favour the Surf Coast, back to the north as the swell eases Friday.

Longer term more funky swells are due, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!

Actully superfish, surfed a beachbreak down great ocean road way and it was nice, clean and 2ft really fun session. Weather is really nice aswell so makes it even better. You will get your 4 days of fun starting yesterday but it will finish Tuesday looks like it will be fun down at Mornington but from Wednesday I will be licking my chops again because the winds will be NW and you will be rocking up looking at surf which is choppy and shithouse. Sure you get 4 days of fun but I think we know who ends up better in the long run.
Surf as much over the next 4 days it's the least coast after all you won't no when the next session will be

Haha mate you can't judge people on their decision to surf a particular spot or where they live ... being in the ocean is fun regardless of where you surf. If you were surfing a 2ft beachie today I am doubtful you know ... The island can pump, there are most definetely spots on a NW wind. Wednesday looks shit unless you like fat burgers.

Unless you are trolling Vicsurfing you are fucking clueless mate. The best waves in Vic aren't on the surf coast yes they are good yes they are consistent and easy to predict when they are on but they are not the best waves in the State.

let's keep the Melbourners at 3ft winki and let them think theyre scoring (; 90% of viccos surfing community would be clueless in this respect

The most well known, but no where near the best. The poor blokes lost it..

And before he chimes in, I'm not claiming they're on the M.P either.

(Although we do have Vics best lefthander.. Haha)

I would say no to that .... an exceptional wave and much more user friendly, but there is a much longer and equally protected left within spitting distance of a much much hollower left. Yours would be better if it wasn't for the boatloads of people

sf ,
I don't agree with you .
Goofy's left is and can be much longer . Just seasonal . The wave you talk of can get good , but is rare . No argument on its ugly sister , but that doesn't hold true size . You would shit yourself to see another location closer that breaks at near twice that size and twice as close to a rock shelf . ( think that gnarly Kalbarri spot x2 ,[ not jakes ] looks more like Mullaghmore , but only one section . )
There are three other long lefts , one of which couldn't be further from infront of your nose . The three longest are over sand . I presume the one you talk of has feral pebbles .

Indeed.

There's even more to this comments chain than the depth and nuance found in Gary's jokes.

Does MP have many good reefs which handle swell ?

goofyfoot Sunday, 7 Aug 2016 at 9:10pm

It does but the best ones are quiet slabby. People mostly tow them rather than paddle in.

There's paddle reefs that guys surf 9-10ft boards on but that's a wally wave rather than hollow

my favourite bit about vs1s attitude is that he's from melbourne but claiming he's a surfcoast local, while attempting to crowd his lineups ... city people are cooked

Look boys I am going to have to stop the fun, I am just trying to piss you guys off. I surf Mornington, Phillip island, surf coast, further west basically everywhere and I love all the spots in Vicco. I love Mornington was there today actully so basically all I said was me being a troll, I know there are some epic waves outside of the surf coast so I might see your the lineup peace brothers

Shame about the lack of swell on the Peninsula, as there are some fun small wave banks at the moment.
