Recap
Friday’s W/SW swell held well into the weekend with clean 2ft waves on offer most of Saturday across the Mid Coast while the South Coast saw a strong increase in SW swell energy to 4-6ft under light winds.
Yesterday was great down South with clean conditions and solid surf easing back from 4ft or so while the Mid Coast maintained 2ft sets but was wind affected before glassing off late.
Today we’ve got a bit less swell with variable winds across both coasts, still fun down South and holding 1-2ft across the Mid Coast for the patient.
Good sets in the mix Saturday morning
This week and weekend (Apr 15 - 20)
Our favourable run of winds for the South Coast will continue with the Mid Coast missing out on the coming swells until some new W/SW energy arrives later week.
The current mix of swells from the weekend, along with a new, long-range SW groundswell for today are due to ease back into tomorrow and a N/NE offshore wind will only tend variable into the early afternoon ahead of later sea breezes.
Middleton should ease back from 2ft to possibly 3ft with tiny waves inside the gulf.
Into Wednesday, a new S/SW groundswell is due, generated by a great but slightly poorly aimed fetch of gale to severe-gale W/NW winds that projected towards the polar shelf through yesterday, with a secondary fetch of even less favourably aligned NW severe-gales set to follow today.
From the initial fetch we should see Wednesday morning coming in an inconsistent 3ft+ across Middleton as it spreads radially up and into us, easing through the day with the swell being too south for the Mid Coast.
This swell is due to ease into the afternoon, with the secondary slightly smaller pulse due Thursday, maintaining 2ft+ sets across Middleton. Local winds will remain favourable for the South Coast and N/NW tending variable W/NW on Wednesday with Thursday offering moderate N/NE tending N/NW winds, possibly light later.
Now, into Thursday afternoon but more so Friday a fun mix of new W/SW energy is due, generated by a strong polar frontal system that’s currently forming around the Heard Island region.
A tight but strong fetch of gale to severe-gale SW winds will project towards Western Australia today, breaking down into this evening, resulting in an inconsistent W/SW swell that looks to build Thursday afternoon, reaching 1-1.5ft across the Mid Coast with Friday offering infrequent 2ft sets on the favourable parts of the tide, 3ft to occasionally 4ft across Middleton.
Conditions look great for both coasts Friday with variable, local offshore winds ahead of weak sea breezes, with the swell easing slowly Saturday under a W/NW-NW flow.
Now, the outlook from the weekend and into next week is still a bit wishy washy thanks to the models not resolving an incoming high behind troughy weather on the weekend. We’ll likely see S’ly winds kick in Sunday, possibly persisting into Tuesday/Wednesday with small surf but more on this Wednesday.

Don't know if any reports have come In but the algae was on the mid on the incoming Saturday....wasn't alot amd it did seems to clear but it was noticeable like a pond scum...slightly irrated nasal passages.
Perhaps the thing that pushed the shark that was sighted into unusual areas.
Agree with that.....saw green foam residue on the low tide at my local mid beach. I feel the water has warmed again compared to the last few weeks.Itchy eyes sunday morning too......
Are the conditions on the far, especially Middleton to Goolwa stretch improving? Anyone surf on the weekend and have a problem?
Again today on the mid but less than Saturday.
Yes posted yesterday that had eye irritation and cough from surf Saturday. Locals living near the beach suffering similar without leaving their homes.
Pretty Sore eyes and a little bit of a chest thing in the bay yesterday after 2 surfs , first time I’ve felt it … was offshore, looked clear … bit of a lottery it seems
i'm headed to Victor for Easter and all i see is onshores from Thursday onwards.... shit surf and killer sea spray... can't wait!
The algae issue is still present at Goolwa and appears to be airborne. When the wind shifted to the south, everyone in Goolwa started coughing. Some of the crew who went surfing experienced breathing difficulties and eye irritation.
Looks like the gulf is full of it as well..
Need a proper stormy to mix it all up.
Where are you getting that chart from mate?
Here you go. https://oceancurrent.aodn.org.au/product.php
Select region, then chlorophyll from the left menu. Step back days if there is no reading.
^ does white indicate <0.05 milligrams, or not measured craig?
White = cloud likely and not measured.
Surprisingly, the mid seems pretty good to me, I haven't seen any dead fish around and the water is crystal clear. Caught a bucket of healthy looking mullet and a few whiting at Maslins on Friday. They were catching some nice Gar from the Pt. Noarlunga jetty yesterday with these big tides. They say it is safe to eat fish caught alive but don't eat dead ones due to spoilage and decomposition.
I did notice a tiny bit of brown scum on the beach at Southport and hope the onshores in a few days time don't wash the bloom into the mid. I've had heaps of surfs lately with no sign of any symptoms.
Looking at the above map you would think the gulf would be ground zero for this shit.
Yeah looks to be more focussed away from the metro beaches in that image above.
Surfed at Boetcher Rd today sore eyes after but the water there was reasonably clean and not too much seaweed which was pretty thick on most parts of the Middleton to Goolwa stretch.
Great weekend for waves on the mid coast over the weekend and had no symptoms of eye or coughing but it can happen Owe Danny Boy
thanks all for the algae updates, I sent a mate your mid fishing report @old-dog, he appreciated the intel
(that's a chlorophyl chart @craig? indicates algae? I assumed it was temp at first glance..)
Surfed Middleton Bay early Sunday morning. Felt a really dry throat but that's about it.
