Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Wed February 9th)

Best Days:  Thursday, Friday morning, Monday southern corners once the change hits

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Easing surf Thurs with flukey winds, best early
  • Fading surf Fri with S/SW tending SE winds
  • Building N/NE windswell Sun, easing Mon with N/NW tending S/SE winds

Recap

Surf has built into the 3ft range yesterday with onshore SE winds, pushing up further into the 4-5ft range today under a light offshore wind regime that tended NE through the a’noon.

Size is expected to slowly ebb away through Thursday with a troughy pattern seeing NW/SW winds tend S/SW then SE in the a’noon.

This week and weekend (Feb 8 - 13)

A troughy S’ly change Fri is likely to see some small levels of S/SE wind swell and a few leftover E’ly swell trains topping out around 2-3ft under ordinary conditions.

The weekend isn’t looking great with a small mixed bag of 1-2ft surf both days, lifting a notch Sun a’noon as NE wind swell builds in under freshening N’ly winds. That should see size reach 2-3ft later Sun, easing quickly Mon as the proximate fetch of N’ly winds quickly retreats out of the swell window.

A dynamic pattern unfolds next week as a tropical cyclone steams down the Tasman Sea pipe from it;’s South Pacific origins but it’s never really in a favourable position for swell production for the Island.

A few small E’ly swell trains are on the radar for Wed in the 2ft range but keep expectations pegged low- it’s going to be a weak and Lully swell source. Winds should be light though, so worth chasing a few small peaks around.

Into the end of next week and a trough and cold front is expected to bring a flush of S swell Fri. Looks like surf in the 2-3ft range but it’s too far our for specifics so check back in Fri for the latest update.
